Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules
still apply.
- This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
- While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread
. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
- Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.
If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

This part is interesting. It's our first real notion in years about what Thanos' actual plan might be.
Doesn't sound like he's trying to make Death love him, at any rate. At least, not specifically. Maybe they've interpreted him as a cosmic Ra's Al Ghul, or maybe along the lines of how Justice League: Doom interpreted Vandal Savage: culling the population so the rest can more easily adapt to his glorious rule.
On a different note: It's a special day tomorrow: Ao S airs its 100 episode. Who would have predicted that after the first episodes.
Hmmm, Thanos without his death obsession, this is scary new ground.
Completly flies into the face of why I thought Thanos made the perfect final Avengers villain post Avengers (2012). (being a team of 'avenging' alien deterrents doesn't work if the alien has no fear of being killed, unlike Loki he cannot be threatened)
I mean, he'll probably still keep the Death obsession. But it's possible that's not his major objective.
Like, maybe they'll make him a warlord who wants to rule, but has no problem killing scores of people not just because he's a Blood Knight, because he sees death as a glorious thing worthy of devoting oneself to. I remember Star Control 2 interpreted their Big Bads that way, more or less. It was pretty cool.
Interestingly he was tasked with killing half the universe in the original storyline, but he kinda suffered Motive Decay and it just turned into him trying to win Death's love. Prior to that, he actually had a whole speech where he explained to Silver Surfer why the universe's overpopulation was a serious problem and why genocide was the only humane solution.
EW: Is he also the abusive father? We know from the Guardians films he kidnapped Gamora (Zoe Saldana) and Nebula (Karen Gillan) and trained them to be child soldiers.
Josh Brolin: They’re tools to him.
EW: Is he cold the whole way through, or does he feel any affection for them?
JB: Yeah. I do think he does. When you see the relationship with Gamora and you see that evolves, God I wish I could tell you. I can’t! When [directors Joe and Anthony Russo] came up to me after we had done maybe three quarters of the film, they said, “It wasn’t necessarily intended that you feel for this guy as much as you do.” Obviously he has a grand plan, like somebody who’s pulling in kids for their own selfish bloodshed. But he has a capacity to love very much and very deeply.

And Feige pretty much confirms we will see some major deaths and retirements
.
Kevin Feige: People always will jump to that. That’s not necessarily what we’re talking about. I talk a lot, because I’m a big-ass nerd, about Star Trek: The Next Generation, “All Good Things.” That to me is one of the best series finales ever. That wasn’t about death. Picard went and played poker with the crew, something he should have done a long time ago, right?
EW: One criticism you’ve gotten is when somebody dies in a Marvel movie, they tend to come back in some way. If it happens, will it be for real this time?
Kevin Feige: Yes. I mean, I could always list off the characters that we’ve killed in our movies that haven’t come back, but the big ones, which I know they’re looking at …? [Pause.] I would just say, yes. People need to be careful what they wish for.

There’s a one-shot from way back when where Thanos reflects on raising Gamora, even giving her Christmas presents as a means to give her a more “normal” upbringing, thinking it would make her more useful. Long story short, it establishes he has a capacity to care, but buries it really, really deep for the sake of his goals.
I wonder if that comic characterization is going to be used.

Coulson and Bucky have both been narratively resurrected. The films have also employed a few Disney Deaths such as Iron Man at the end of Avengers 1 or Pepper in Iron Man 3.
Oh! And J.A.R.V.I.S., who reincarnated sort of as Vision.

My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub.Bucky and Janet and Nick Fury and Coulson but only on tv
The criticism is overwrought because plenty of people stay dead. Quicksilver, Frigga, most villains
Forever liveblogging the Avengers

I've also seen people ask to take spoilers to the specific film threads before.
Have you any dreams you'd like to sell?
