Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules
still apply.
- This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
- While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread
. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
- Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.
If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Is it just me, or is T'Challa's pose on that poster kind of... Wolverine-y?
@The stills: So it looks like fans are finally getting what they wanted and have both modern versions of Sherlock Holmes working together. In a more in-universe sense, it looks like they're doing a "Scientist Supremes meet Sorceror Supremes" plot, with Banner and Tony teaming up with Strange and Wong.
Also, is that Banner meeting Shuri in the stills? If the posters are foreshadowing as to the kind of meetings that will be taking place (they probably aren't, but...) I can't said to see Shuri geek out over Vision.

I see nothing surprising about that. Iron Man and Captain America are the two longstanding cornerstones of the MCU. Black Panther is a cultural phenomenon who won audiences over so hard that his movie might actually beat Avengers at the box office. Thanos is the long-anticipated Big Bad of the entire Myth Arc.
These four characters being their highest sellers makes perfect sense to me.
My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub.More details[1]
also, the meme about Bucky and Rocket is canon now.
Neither Thor nor Hulk has had the kind of film success that Cap, Stark, and Panther have.
While many of us are pushing for Black Widow to get her own independent film, she hasn't and is still relegated to being a supporting character for her entire film career.
Audiences are sick of Spider-Man.
Thanos is the Big Bad of the entire Myth Arc.
Makes sense to me.
EDIT: To clarify, the response to Civil War was basically, "Holy shit, throwing Iron Man and Captain America against each other was as awesome as you could possibly have imagined it would be!!!" The response to Ragnarok was, "Holy shit, Thor and the Hulk made a good movie. Hell must have frozen over."

New Heroes Rise, Others Will End
Some heroes are just getting started: Chadwick Boseman’s Black Panther, Benedict Cumberbatch’s Doctor Strange, Tom Holland’s Spider-Man, and Brie Larson’s Captain Marvel, who isn’t expected to be in Infinity War, although her first film, due next year and set in the 1990s, is shooting now. Other heroes have had multi-film arcs, with actors who have hinted they’re ready to move on, or at least step back. One of them is Robert Downey Jr., whose charisma in the first chapter, 2008’s Iron Man, was a key building block in this expanding universe.
“Clearly, Kevin is, in addition to everything else, an excellent, almost clairvoyant troubleshooter,” Downey tells EW. “I think the trouble is the endlessness.”
Between Feige and the Russos, Downey says the cast feels their alter egos are in capable hands. “We’re going to pull out the stops, and stop exploring conventions, and look to do stuff where we go, ‘Oh, but if we do that, that’s very, very definitive.’ Well, great, let’s get definitive for a change!” Downey says. “We’re like a family now. Ten years later, we’re hanging out and having lunch, and kind of wondering when the draft is going to come in. Which one of us bites it and when?”
That’s not an exaggeration, according to Infinity War’s screenwriters, Christopher Markus and Stephen Mc Feely, who co-wrote all three Captain America movies. Some heroes may simply get to ride off into the sunset. Others may sacrifice themselves or fall in battle. “It’s safe to say we will say farewell to people,” Mc Feely promises.
So, some things must end. And the idea of clearing away some to make way for others is the plan of the villain — Thanos, a godlike galactic warlord played via performance capture by Josh Brolin. Ever since the first Avengers film featured his smirking purple face as a post-credit surprise, he has been built up throughout this series as the ultimate tyrant.
This is tangential, and not that anyone asked, but while I would have welcomed a Black Widow movie once I'm kind of sour on the concept now. I'm not denying that the MCU could use more female representation (especially as headliners), but I'd be much more interested if it was a woman of color instead. On top of that Johansson is kind of a shitty person, as her starring in Git S and her incredibly clueless statements trying to defend it proved.
The details on Thanos' backstory are interesting:
That is shockingly sympathetic, and a complete 180 from the comics, where Thanos is the one responsible for the genocide on Titan in the first place.
I'm hype
Also the article suggests that the material for Cap's shield was taken, not a gift. Which is an interesting change from the comics and also relevant to a joke making the rounds about how appropriate Cap's shield is as a symbol of America being made of something stolen from Africa
It almost foils him to Tony kinda. Tony wouldn't kill half of the world to save the other half but there's a lot of sketchy stuff he would consider doing

Forever liveblogging the AvengersI just watched episode 1 of Jessica Jones season 2.
I cannot believe they adapted the fucking Whizzer. It was funny enough as a cute little in-joke but when he turned out to really have superpowers I almost had to pause the show.

You cannot firmly grasp the true form of Squidward's technique!Considering the disparity between regional movie release dates, occasional leaks or pre-release spoilers, and people seeing the movie early/late, going into this thread at all with spoilers set to off sounds like a really bad idea.
I've only been in this thread since... I wanna say around either Iron Man 3 or Thor 2's release, but I'm pretty sure spoilers for recent movies/shows have always been fair game as long as they're properly spoilertagged and given enough context for people to know "this is a spoiler specifically in regard to ____".

I think they did that on The Punisher too.
Have you any dreams you'd like to sell?
