Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

American Kaiju, though humorous, is a hot mess that the MCU doesn't need to touch.

Where is that from, anyway? That’s Hawkeye and Songbird in front of it, right?

Ah Songbird, I'd love to see her in the MCU in the future. She's actually got a fairly interesting character arc that could be fun to see on-film.

Swanpride got me stuck on wanting Silverclaw. She can be Thor's replacement! God, demigoddess, close enough, right?

Ultron has a better track record for building good robots.

I guess I will eventually write an article about which characters and teams are still left and to which ones I look forward the most.

Sunspot would be a great protagonist for a Thunderbolts film.

Eh, outside of Ultron, all of Stark's A.I.s have turned out good.

[up]You mean outside of Jarvis all AI have turned out bad...Aida certainly did more than enough damage.

Friday has been okay.

Although a distinction that the MCU draws is that Jarvis pre-Visioning and Friday are Virtual Intelligences while Ultron and Aida probably at around the time she starts to rules lawyer are Artificial Intelligences.

Also, Karen. Karen is a good AI. The best AI, in fact.

I don't think that either Karen or Friday are A.I.s. They seem to be more very advanced computers with a little bit more options in terms of responses. I don't think that either of them can act independently the way Jarvis did.

So... we're 3 for 5? That's still a 40% chance of evil.

[up]Okay... 3 for 6. A little better, but not hugely encouraging. Not quite at Harold Finch level standards, here.

Harold Finch is indeed at 97.6% of evil AI. On the other hand, he was smart enough to destroy all the evil versions and only kept the good one - something Tony really should have learned by now. Compare to his colleague/rival who got a 1/1 on evil AI.

AIDA wasn't Tony's, so I don't really count her.

There is a distinction between a robot (even a learning robot) and an actual AI.

Though, frankly, I find an AI which actually has feelings less terrifying than a computer program which just fakes emotions.

Oops, I meant Songbird when I mentioned a good protagonist for a Thunderbolts film. I don't know why that came out as Sunspot...
