Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

    Original post
Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

[up][up][up][up] We are speaking about a specific role. They had cast CB anyway (and apparently were really set on him, considering that they even delayed the shooting so that it could be squeezed into his schedule). So why not let him use his British accent? That is something which works within what they had planned anyway.

That in general they can branch out is an additional matter...in ALL directions. Africa, Asia, Australia but also Europe.

Arbitrary questionnaire:

What Marvel character do you most want to see in a movie? In a Netflix? On a network?

[up] Once the Fox deal gets though, I want a Silver Surfer origin movie.

I am also partial of them eventually introducing Black Cat (in the MCU!!! Do you hear me, Sony?), but I am not in a hurry.

[up]x3 Starbrand and Nightmask because I was the only person who read Greg Weisman's series and think they would be perfect "next generation" heroes.

Black Cat and Silver Sable (I don't mind if Sony does them either)

Monica Rambeau

Kamala Khan

Jason Strongbow especially if we get to see him beat up Bullseye

Kamala Khan is my number one want. But I'm happy to wait for Peter to age up a little so I don't have to listen to people complaining about her being a SJW Spider-man ripoff.

Netflix series; Blade. Absolutely Blade. Two years ago I'd have said Cloak and Dagger, but they've gone to network.

On Network, give me She-Hulk. I'd love her to be on a more prestigious platform, but she has tonal issues with the Netflix verse and a block buster film won't let her spend her time dealing with cooky lawyer stuff. Though I would be happy to have her become a supporting character in the Netflix shows. Like, barely any explanation; one of the supporting lawyer characters is seven foot tall, green and stacked.

Outside of that, I think Electra would benefit from a spin off. She's best when she's not wrapped up in some other person's plot.

Monica Rameau's Spectrum deserves a film, but I expect she's going to be demoted to supporting cast for Carol.

Scarlet Witch getting a film series where she interacts with the supernatural (in contrast with Strange's Cosmic) is a pet want of mine.

Espanol Bloodstone kaiju film. Cash in on the genre resurgence and have a red headed brit with a massive pony tail take on Fing Fang Foom.

Edit: If we get mutants in the MCU I'd gladly have a Storm solo film long before we get an X-men film. Also let Nightcrawler have a film where he's a pirate/priest/jester in hell.

-has flashbacks to the Elektra 2005 film, and the Daredevil film,shudders-

Those times before Disney brought Marvel were dark times,as far as their films are concerned, with the exception of spiderman

That character was Electra in name and costume only. Really she was just a shitty watered down Echo. (fights Daredevil because the Kingpin fools her into thinking DD killed her farther)

A bugging question of mine is how the legal system in 616 even works, what with mind control, resurrection and magic being common place.

How do you prove anything?

That was a big plot point in Jessica Jones, particularly in how mind control is practically impossible to prove in a court of law.

[up][up][up]I do wonder if they should go for the animate route for such a series.

I found the resolution of the JJ plot thread rather disheartening. In the end they had to cheat. They couldn't prove the truth with him still alive.

[up] That's the point. It is a film noir style show, film noir always has a disheartening ending.

Perfect. The Marvel Netflix shows plans to drive their audience into heartbreaking depression continues unhindered. tongue

Except for Luke Cage. They really need to step up their game their.

The first seasons of Daredevil and Jessica Jones end with them defeating their enemies. The first season of Luke Cage ends with him going to jail for a crime he didn't commit.

I wouldn't call it more uplifting than the others.

[up] Jessica Jones ends with her not being able to rescue hope and having to do something she doesn't want to do, kill again. In a way Killgrave won.

In a way, Killgrave won

But in another way he really didn't want to die

Let's call it a draw

Yeah, Luke Cage season 1 ends with him going to jail, but having left the neighborhood on the mend, most the criminal organizations threatening everyone in disarray with everyone - most importantly him - unworried and confident that he'll be out of jail before long. It's significantly more uplifting tone-wise than Jessica Jones, which has her finding "victory" (an even then, more like bitter closure, since ultimately she failed at what she set out to do) at the expense of everything she was trying to protect and her own ability to be happy.

On the whole, he's the only Netflix hero (at least at the time) to leave the world around him brighter and happier than it was before he started.

Speaking of sad things, my sister is rewatching Civil War right now:

"But shouldn't Okoye be here instead of that other lady?"

"She's probably taking T'Chaka's body home."

"How dare you? SHUT UP."
