Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules
still apply.
- This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
- While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread
. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
- Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.
If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

I don’t know, scenes like Strange getting a taste of multiple dimensions, the chase in New York, the reverse third act battle, and “I Come To Bargin” were pretty memorable scenes that does the character justice in the film. The movie writting is low quality, but the film is in no ways boring and forgettable.
The only scenes I remember liking are the multiple dimension shit and him coming to bargain. That's it. That's all. The chase in New York was memorable to people, really? I don't have any memory of it other than it being just boring ass effects like most of the movie.
Have you any dreams you'd like to sell?
The effects for that chase was pretty impressive for the shear holy shit factors of seeing New York distorting and shifting as well as the climax which reveals the fact that the Ancient One is drawing power from the Dark Dimension. It was a really good scene that capitalize on the mind trip moments the comics was known for.
I remember it looking nice and full of neat special effects but not being that interesting. Contrast the action scenes in Black Panther, which don't revolve around particularly spectacular feats but have gorgeous costuming plus stronger plot and cinematography to keep me engaged.
I felt nothing when the Ancient One died. Zuri's on the other hand shocked me quite a lot.
Cumberbatch was incredibly miscast. I'm fairly certain they only chose him because of his notoriety, not because he was a good fit for the role. All of the previous MCU actors proved to be good choices despite being relative unknowns or seemingly risky choices, but here they chose a very well known actor who is fancast in every goddamn property under the sun and who cannot do a good American accent to save his life.
As for the New York scene, Inception did it better and I've only ever seen trailers of Inception. It just looks like Inception-lite. And frankly I get more angry about the effects than anything because they feel hollow when coupled with the boring ass story.
So is Zuri's and yet it felt more meaningful than The Whitewashed One's.

Bucky's "death" still affected me even though I already knew because of reading the comics that they would bring him back as the Winter Soldier. They successfully made him charismatic and communicated how important he was to Cap.
On the other hand the Ancient One had a nice speech on the nature of time but she was such a sterile character because of the piss-poor writing that I had no emotional connection to her at all.
x2 Nah, Zhuri is more like Gurney Halleck than Obi Wan.
I honestly kind of wish she live longer since she seems to have a backstory that could of been touch upon regarding why she drew powers from the Dark Dimension and how she became Ancient One.
I still can’t believe they didn’t went with the obvious and cast Hugh Laurie.

x4 Considering Marvel Studio ability to make actors younger and that ol’ Mr. Laurie actually makes for the grumpier old Doctor Strange we need. Totally worth a hypothetical cast.
Which is why I would of want Hugh Laurie as the guy. Sure its typecasting because of his role in House, but shit that would of made Strange a far more interesting character in the film and make his hero’s journey interesring. Though, again, I am thinking of the Lionsgate movie.
Ditto. Someone did say he worked better as a cameo/supporting character rather than main. Though we have to see how Infinity War turns out when he is delegated to supporting cast.

Honestly Thor Ragnarok sold me on Benedict Cumberbatch as Dr. Strange. I don't think he's great but I thought he was fun in it.
This song needs more love.I don't mind Bumpercar Crumplezone as Strange, though I think I'd have preferred someone older. I dunno about Hugh Laurie, though, he doesn't have quite the look either...
If only we had a time machine to go grab Vincent Price.

You cannot firmly grasp the true form of Squidward's technique!I could ramble on about Doctor Strange and its ups and downs but I've been beat to the punch. I'll just say I think it's a pretty middling movie with some good moments and fun to be had if you can turn your brain off but it's far from my first choice for an MCU re-watch. And don't even get me started on the whole Ancient One fiasco.
Fortunately, it's all been uphill from here for Phase 3 as every movie that's followed has knocked it out of the park IMO.
On my wave, passing oooooooonWell yeah, I could easily see another actor doing it just as well if not better but it made me think "Yeah, I'm okay with him in the role".
