Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

    Original post
Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

I want him to use cooler magic spells.

I was quite underwhelmed by how lame most of the magic was.

I don't have any predictions. The MCU lasted longer than I thought it would have, so I'm just going to ride it out until I somehow lose interest.

I am not OK with waiting four years to get another Black Panther movie, dammit. I need my Wakanda fix. Give Coogler and the cast giant wheelbarrows of money and release the next one in 2020.

...in 2020, pretty please? I want Black Panther 2 for my 30th birthday, lol. 2022 is too far away.

Black Panther 2 will definitely come sooner rather than later. If it wasn't before before then it sure as hell is now.

Coogler's kind of busy with a different film so the earliest a BP 2 movie will come out is 2020 but likely 2021.

They only got the first episodes, right? In this case, I don't think that they can judge the pacing.

I mean, at this point pacing issues are just part and parcel of these shows. I've come to expect it, but I don't particularly mind it anyway if I don't have anything better to do at the moment.

I'm surprised the second season is already out.

Goddamn am I behind, I haven't even finished the second season of Daredevil.

It comes out on the 8th. Reviewers get the first few episodes though.

Which is exactly the problem. I said it before but for the record: RT for TV shows doesn't work. Those reviews are always based on the first few episodes and there aren't many shows which have their best episodes in the beginning and not in the end of the season. Especially regarding the netflix shows that's like reviewing half a movie.

We will just have to wait and see. I mean, it is not like we need to pay extra to see it and we can stop watching anytime.

Oh, I know. I don't put any stock in the opinions of professional critics anyway.

I mostly just wanted to remind everyone that it comes out in about a week. tongue

RT for TV shows doesn't work

  • Daredevil: 86%
  • Jessica Jones: 83%
  • Luke Cage: 93%
  • Defenders: 74%
  • Punisher: 62%
  • Iron Fist: 19%
  • Agents of Shield: 95%
  • Agent Carter: 88%
  • Inhumans: 10%
  • Runaways: 82%

I mean, it's debatable, and I think a number of shows are a bit too high (AOS, Luke Cage, Runaways) and others are a bit too low (Jessica Jones, Punisher), but overall RT isn't panning good shows and praising crappy ones. It isn't putting Agent Carter at 20% and Inhumans over 70. The difference between a 80% and a 90% is and has always been a matter of individual opinion, so I'd say it is about as reliable as it is for movies.

Plus Netflix shows have had writing issues ever since they started to exist. JJ 1 was great in spite of those issues, but it didn't do much to try and solve them, it was just brilliant enough for the viewer to ignore them. If season 2 is not as brilliant as season 1, then the pacing issues are only going to be more glaring - and it's hard to be as brilliant as JJ 1.

[up] Luke Cage got a way higher rating than it deserved because the first half of the season was way stronger than the back-end. Same for Daredevil Season 2. Iron Fist got rated way lower than deserved because it had the best episodes at the back-end, and arguably the same is true for The Punisher. Runaways again got a higher rating because it started out way better than it ended.

I finally saw GOTG and....I actually like it, better than the sequel actually(which it feel it drag until they reach ego), I like how they know each other by tryng to kill themselves it was funny.

What I dont like is Peter being a manchild, since I feel is overused and unecesary, how the pacing can be a little bit to fast here and there and the colector being so wasted.

Also, Ronan is pretty much Malekith done right, if anything, I can see GOTG crossovering with thor any moment of the day.

It IS true that the reviewers only had the first half of Iron Fist to base their reviews on and the second half is better, but I don't think the show deserves to be well-rated in general.

I loved Dr. Strange, excepting the whitewashing controversy which is over now, and I would love a sequel. Dr. Strange has always been one of my favorite Marvel characters, and I really want to see what they do with him in a sequel.

[up][up]It wasn’t dreck but it was definitely the weakest Netflix show so far. Here’s hoping dumping Scott Buck fixes it. Maybe adding Shang Chi.

[up]Agreed.
