Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules
still apply.
- This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
- While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread
. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
- Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.
If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

There are 2 main guesses so far for why Marvel is moving up the release date: 1) to put more space between Infinity War and Deadpool 2 and Solo, or 2) because there's a major surprise in the movie (possibly related to the Fantastic Four, based on the use of the word "FANTASTIC" in the announcement tweet) and they want to move the US release up to match the European one to avoid spoiling it.
Which one do you think it is? I'm guessing it's mainly the first, and the decision was partly based on BP showing you don't need a summer opening weekend to make blockbuster-level money.

As a third option, I think there's a good chance that they're trying to capitalize on BP's success. BP was pretty notable in that a lot of people that wouldn't normally bother to go see a Comic Book/Superhero film specifically went out to watch this. So, they may be trying to get this in theaters before the hype has a chance to die down.
But it's probably a mixture of 1 and 3 with a (honestly very) slight possibility of 2.
"Yo, those kids are straight up liars, man. All I told them to do was run product. And by product, I mean chewing gum."This forbes articles basically says the same thing. One thing they mentioned, that hadn't occurred to me, was that they are releasing during a quiet time in the hopes of breaking the record for global opening weekend. If their movie is the only major one coming out, in addition to the other factors mentioned above, the chances of doing that go way up.
"Yo, those kids are straight up liars, man. All I told them to do was run product. And by product, I mean chewing gum."So what's everybody's predictions for phase four of the MCU? Based on the franchise page it looks like it will consist of ten movies from 2019 through 2022. So far we know 2019 has Spider-Man 2 and 2020 is going to be when Guardians 3 releases. We also know Doctor Strange 2, Black Widow, and Spider-Man 3 are coming at some point. Personally I'm guessing it will be something like this.
- 2019:
- Spider-Man 2 (July)
- 2020:
- Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 3 (May)
- Black Widow (July)
- Doctor Strange 2 (November)
- 2021:
- Black Panther 2 (May)
- Ant Man and the Wasp 2(?) (July)
- Fantastic Four (November)
- 2022:
- Captain Marvel 2 (February)
- Avengers 5 (May)
- Spider-Man 3 (July)
Ant Man and the Wasp 2 is the only movie that I'm a bit unsure of. Depending on how the next one ends I could see them not going for a full trilogy with that series. I'm also unsure of where X-Men could fit although I'm still skeptical of it being set in the same universe as the MCU.
"Our focus is on the next six movies. Finishing the first three phases, getting Untitled Avengers out into the world [in 2019] before publicly focusing on anything else.”
“What I will say is that the goal would not be to underutilise that, or to create something that was less innovative than the first Doctor Strange.
“The comics, especially the Lee/Ditko comics, were always pushing into unexpectedly weird places and storylines.
“That has continued on into the current Doctor Strange comics, which are really great. So anything's possible with Doctor Strange, I wouldn't rule anything out.”
I'd be fine if they gave us a different director, a different writer, made the plot actually fucking wild and crazy, amped the visuals up to outright acidic levels, and put in a goddamn Pink Floyd soundtrack (and I will keep harping on this one, you know it would be awesome and actually fit with the character and the setting). Make this shit psychedelic for once. The first movie is only psychedelic for like five minutes and it's child's play compared to what they could've done.
Personally I feel Doctor Strange is the single worst MCU movie out there. The only redeemable parts are that the crap romance actually ended because it would never work, the effects in that one scene (you know the one) were genuinely trippy, and the ending was clever. That's it.

Have you any dreams you'd like to sell?Personally, I was...kinda ambivalent about Dr Strange? Like, I could live without a sequel to it because, outside of the special effects, it was just okay (though I will always love Mads and pretty much saw it because of him).
As said above, the second part of Infinity War will probably be the next MCU movie released. Considering how big an event it is, I can't imagine them trying to do current stories with other characters before This Big World Ending Event is resolved.
The only exception that I can think of is Captain Marvel, as something that took place a long time ago to gear up for her inclusion in Infinity War part 2.

We already know Avengers 4 is coming next year as the finale to phase 3. I'm thinking about what would come after during phase 4. So far we have a few movies confirmed but only one has a definitive release date.
So far the MCU has avoided bringing back characters needlessly. The only major return is Bucky and that was a case of Never Found the Body mixed with Doomed by Canon.

Doctor Strange has always been one of my favorite comic book heroes and Dormammu my favorite villain, so I'd be pretty disappointed if we didn't get a sequel. And I definitely hope Dormammu eventually returns, as clever as his "defeat" was.
I always just liked the idea of this old mystic sorceror dude palling around with all the science-based heroes like Iron Man, the X-Men, Spider-Man, ect.

You cannot firmly grasp the true form of Squidward's technique!![]()
Doctor Strange is definitely getting a sequel. His movie wasn't as successful as Black Panther's, but it did much better than Ant-Man, who already has his own sequel coming out this year, so a Doctor Strange 2 is almost guaranteed. I wouldn't be surprised if he is part of whatever new incarnation of Avengers we get after Avengers 4, either.
I think now that the origin story is out of the way, a sequel could fix a lot of the frequent complaints people have about the original (namely the origin story rehash we've seen a billion times and the villain being another evil version of the hero).

This is more or less my opinion. I don't really mind him falling into the trend mostly because Killmonger actually represents something that's very thematically powerful and socially relevant (the abandonment and mistreatment of black people), which is not something that most of the other MCU examples can boast.
