Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

Man BP supporting cast was so strong that I think it might be the best out of all the MCU movies.

...I can name like 50 musicians who are not sexy at all or are outright sleazes, being a musician is not inherently sexy.

Relatedly I liked Klaue's loony toon behavior

It reminded me of Klaw's sometimes bonkers comic version while being equally likely that Serkis was hamming it up because he got to be live action for a change

[up][up] Honestly, I kinda forgot about Klaue, so I made up the first reason that popped into my head. But yeah, your reason was better. The accent and all.

Klaue's act worked perfectly for the amount of screentime he got. If he kept on living, it would have gotten old fast.

I really enjoyed how much Serkis played up Klaue as a truly disgusting human being. Like, not just cruel and sadistic, but slovenly with nasty mannerisms and appearance and a truly awful sense of humor. The guy is like a proud, festering wart on the face of the world.

being a musician is not inherently sexy.

I can name one song that proofs otherwise: Still of the Night by Whitesnake.

Checkmate, atheist!

[up]x2 Yeah, that pretty much is why he is entertaining. He just enjoys being an evil shit which makes for a good anti thesis to both the generic doomsday villains the MCU is criticized for having and the morally complex villains who have a valid reason for being evil (Loki, Erik Killmonger, Zemo, Vulture, Wilson Fisk). It really makes his death a shame . . . unless they find some way to bring him back via vibranium infusion like in the original comic . . . nah he’s dead forever; thus depriving us of yet another entertaining villain for these films.

Yeah guys we’re in the MCU thread, so maybe tone it down with all the Black Panther spoilers.

The Fox thing worries me, I strait up don’t want the X-Men in the MCU, some idnevidual mutants sure, but the X-Men bring with them an entire history that just doesn’t work with the MCU, there’s an entire history of widespread mutant existence and persecution that doesn’t work with the MCU.

Bring me the fantastic four, bring me a collection of individual mutants in other films or shows, but leave the X-Men and their history in their own universe.

Imo, the perfect way to introduce the Fantastic Four and Doom is to do it separately. The Four should have along the lines of a Lost In Space-esque story where we find them In Medias Res having been lost adrift in the Negative Zone or something for a long time - until finally returning home at the end of it - whereas Doom appears (maybe even before the Four do) as the Bigger Bad of several other movies a la Thanos. And then eventually, the two converge.

Especially if marvel does kill or retire some of the original Avengers I definitely see an X-Men reboot coming.

I mostly don't want watered down X-Men devoid of what makes them interesting (the social commentary).

Although BP is a step towards having Marvel tackling serious issues, so I am less against the idea as I was before it was released. At least now there is precedent that might indicate the possibility for mutants to be seriously integrated within the MCU.

It just leaves the glaring issue of chronology to deal with, and Cosmic Retcon aside, I don't know how they can fix it. Most mutant characters (especially the prominent ones) are linked in one way or another to the mutant stigma, so adding them independently to the MCU while cutting that entirely sounds perilous to me.

Re: X-Men: I'm fine with them being in the MCU as long as they explain that mutants and the X-gene were incredibly rare before Iron Man (or maybe Captain Marvel depending on how that turns out), especially since Infinity War seems poised to introduce a new set of "core" Avengers.

interesting article in the increasingly socially conscious nature of the MCU in Phase 3 It's something that I've noticed since Thor Ragnarok and it's an interesting thematic direction to take thee MCU.

The MCU doesn't need the X-men. Between Black Panther, Doctor Strange, Captain Marvel, Ant-man, The Fantastic four, The GOTG, The Silver Surfer and Spider-Man they already have more than enough characters to sustain them through phase 4 (if there even is one). And that is before we get to the legacy characters and the possibilities of them getting their hands on Namor.
