Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

That deleted Thor scene is pretty great.

I really wish I could find proof of this independent Wales thing. My Welsh bias thirsts for it

Try this. Anyway for those who can't see it they have the independent Wales flag with the red dragon flying at the UN in one shot.

...so today I found out that Bakuto's actor in Iron Fist and The Defenders was the same guy who played that screaming, whiny pervert who's Shia LaBeouf's roommate from Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen.

Is it really moving up to go from Transformers to Iron Fist though? They're both sexist and racist garbage, the only real good thing is that Bakuto is a hell of a lot better than the guy he played in Transformers.

[up]I was mostly being humorous. Sorry I didn't make that clear. But as you said Bakuto's character is better written and it was nice to see him stretch his acting chops a bit. It isn't a lot but it is something.

For various reasons me and my mom have decided against seeing Black Panther on opening weekend, which I can understand but damn it makes me even more anxious to see it. I've heard plenty of positive buzz, and for the MCU's first movie starring a non-white hero that's honestly really great to hear (another supposedly good MCU villain is also always nice). Then again Marvel's been on fire this past year IMO so I'm not surprised.

Frankly I found his acting as Bakuto worse than his acting in Transformers. They're aiming to make Bakuto some kind of charismatic cult leader type but he comes off too wooden and annoyingly smug, and I don't know if the smugness is intentional or just the actor's tone of voice. Now he does get to fight, and he's a good martial artist (though of course this being Iron Fist, good fucking luck with that editing), but I hated his acting so fucking much.

I'm probably going to wait until next weekend to see it since my Marvel-loving friend's schedule doesn't work out for it.

I REALLY liked this movie. My complaints are relatively minor. I'd easily give it a 9/10, maybe a 9.5.

Sadly I can't watch this weekend....some kind of flu is going through my family, and now my throat hurts. I hope that I can shake it fairly quickly, but it would be a bad idea to spend the time in a crowded place.

That was my favorite MCU movie, and a strong contender for favorite superhero movie period.

I skipped after the first Stinger because I guessed the second one would be about tying the movie back to the rest of the MCU - and I think that the movie's rare flaws all come from the necessity to tie it all to a larger universe - the first third of the movie up to The Reveal is good, but just that, nothing more. As soon as everything MCU-related bar Ross who never overstays his welcome so no problem with him has been pretty much dealt with, the movie really elevates to a new level.

It also introduces a bunch of absolutely awesome women in Okaye, Nakia and especially Shuri.

Kinda vague spoilers about BP. But it really seems like the last couple of Marvel movies have themes about family and fathers in particular.
