Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

Throw Valkyrie in there as well (especially with Thor being King of Asgard now).

It is pretty much Spidey's most consistent character trait that the thing that gets him most excited about superteams is the cash money.

He's going to be fighting Thanos, so he's not going to be unwilling to fight large scale battles. It's more that Spider-Man has always had personal reasons for resisting joining big teams full time (including, for instance, that they don't pay well enough, or at all, but also sometimes because he just doesn't think it's worth the hassle), and only fully becomes members of such things occasionally.

Which is entirely appropriate for the character, really. Spider-Man's thing is poking his nose in where it ought not to be. He gets involved with everything. He can't just not. It's compulsive for him; if bad shit is going down anywhere in the universe and he catches wind of it, he wants to be involved.

To this end, Spider-Man is Marvel's number one team-up superhero, even moreso than Wolverine. He just pops in like, "Hey guys, whatcha doin'? Fighting aliens? Sweet, I'm down. I just got back from helping the X-Men defeat the Purifiers and then popped over with Dr. Strange into the Dark Dimension. I heard the Avengers are going into the future next week to fight Kang the Conqueror; that sounds awesome. But right now? Let's fight some aliens!"

It's what he does. He's street-level by trade, but if Spider-Man knows some shit is going down, he'll be in the thick of it no matter what it is. That's a key aspect of the character that we never got to see adapted in the films due to having an isolated universe for much of his film career.

(Thanks for reminding me that I have to catch up on Gravity Falls...)

"Finish" is the word you're looking for there. It's been over for a couple years now.

Random team-up I wanna see. Spider-Man and Shuri. Wonder what Spider-Man and another teen hero (kinda) team - up would be like.

It's going to be weird seeing the visual contrast between the two because of the extreme Dawson Casting in the case of Shuri, even though their actors aren't actually that different in age.

I thought Letitia looks enough like a teen to realistically pass.

Hasbro is doing an MCU 10th Anniversary line to spotlight characters who haven't gotten figures before. Crossbones and Iron Man Mark VII are the first new revealed.

Just saw Black Panther. It's great. The first half is a little formulaic, but then it goes full Shakespearean tragedy in the second half and it becomes spectacular. Michael B Jordan is the MVP - my favorite villain in ages - with Winston Duke as a close second.

So I'm rewatching Spider-Man: Homecoming and I'm at the part where Peter storms off out of detention. You know what I really like? He storms out in the middle of one of those Captain America videos playing.

The Captain America videos are a fantastic choice for this film, because of the way they accentuate Peter's crisis. At this point in the movie, he doesn't even want to be in school. He wants to be out there being Spider-Man, being an Avenger, catching bad guys and getting that pat on the back from Stark.

That's precisely what makes the Cap videos so apt. Right at the start, the coach sets the tone for the film's use of them when he says, "I'm pretty sure this guy's a war criminal now but we have to show him." It's a funny bit and sets up the use of the videos as a running gag, but it also establishes their tone. The detention scene is the payoff.

Peter's frustrated. He literally just told Ned that he wants to quit school and just go full-time into being Spider-Man. Now, not only is he stuck in detention, but he's being condescended to by one of his archenemies. In the context of the MCU, Peter only really knows Captain America as a guy he had a big Avengers battle to try and take down. So far as he's concerned, Cap's a supervillain that got away.

Imagine this scene with anyone in Spidey's rogues gallery. Let's say his iconic foe, the Green Goblin. Peter's pissed off and frustrated that everyone keeps telling him to stay in school when he really wants to be out there fighting the Vulture, and then the coach plays a recording of Norman Osborn regurgitating that very message he's railing against, telling him that what he wants to be doing is irresponsible and he should just focus on his schooling.

It naturally makes sense that hearing it from one of his adversaries is what prompts Peter to flip out and storm off, quitting detention to go be Spider-Man like he wanted to.

I'm sorry, in what universe does MCU Spider-Baby see Cap as his enemy? His first words to Steve are literally "Hey, Captain. Big fan!"

Interesting how most adults in the MCU probably think of Cap as "living legend back from the dead" but most kids might as "guy in a flag suit who doesn't have the coolest powers".

[up]x3 Yeah problem with that logic: Captain isn’t anywhere near like the usual Spider-Man villains. Sure he is an antagonist for Spidey in Civil War, but while he is breaking the law he is still a hero to Spidey AND he wasn’t trying to flat out murder the hero just incapacitate him. Hell Cap even unironically show Peter respect at the end of their skirmish in that scene just because he wouldn’t give up. Its nothing similar to Osborne or Toomes who will gladly want Peter dead and will showcase traits of Faux Affably Evil when in public.

I say its more of the equivalence of Spidey getting a lecture from a member of the Fantastic Four, seeing how in comic canon Spider-Man is often frenimies with the overall team (mostly with the Thing and Human Torch).

Change of subject: at the end of Iron Man 3 Tony had the arc reactor removed form his chest, right? Looking at shots from the Infinity War trailer, there's a scene where he's on the street with Dr. Strange, so it's ostensibly the present day. Tony's wearing street clothes. But there's clearly a big, blue, glowing, triangular-shaped thing in his chest. Does anybody know what that's about?

I think it might be on his chest rather than in his chest. Like, it seems to be attached to the outside of his underarmor suit rather than glowing from within it.

It's probably for powering the Iron Man, but no longer has to be embedded in his flesh for a secondary purpose of keeping him alive.

Yeah he tells Bruce in Avengers that the arc reactor powers pretty much all of his tech. So that seems like a good possibility, he doesn't need it to survive anymore but uses it to power his armor/tech.

You know, it's a shame we haven't got any substantial interactions between Vision and Tony ever since AOU. How does Tony feel about Vision? Does Tony miss JARVIS? Does he see a lot of JARVIS in Vision? Likewise, how does Vision feel about Tony? Does he still have some of JARVIS' memories left in him?

Tony seems to be putting a lot of faith in Vision to be infallible

That's not good for either of them
