Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

Doesn't he create The Ultimates team?

Widow, Black Panther, Scarlet Witch, Vision, Captain Marvel, and War Machine would be a pretty good Avengers team for movie 5.

[up]x2 Which Ultimates? The bad one by Mark Millar or the good one by Al Ewing? Cause if its the latter, well, technically its Blue Marvel who formed the team.

[up] What? No love for Ant-Man? sad

Personally my idealized Avenger team would of have Hawkeye, War Machine, Captain Marvel, Scarlet Witch, Vision, Black Panther, Ant-Man, Wasp and Dr. Pym on the team. It would be a loose adaption of West Coast Avengers. And Kang the Conqueror would be the overall Big Bad of this triology if films.

Ant-Man doesn't strike me as the type to be a permanent member. Same with Spider-Man and Doctor Strange. I could see them helping out occasionally but I don't think they'd be official members of the team.

My idealized Avengers team would be Iron Man, War Machine, Hulk, Thor, Captain America, Black Widow, Hawkeye, Falcon, the Guardians of the Galaxy, Scarlet Witch, Vision, Ant-Man, Wasp, Black Panther, Spider-Man, Doctor Strange, and Captain Marvel.

[up]x2 There is a way to make Scott a permanent member, as he probably join the team for the sake of building good PR for his character and showing his daughter he is a for real super hero as he’s a member of the Avengers.

Hope and Hank, however, will probably serve as temporary member; especially Hank in a similar way as his role in the actual West Coast Avengers comics where he was just a supporting character and wasn’t a full fledge member of the team (hense why he’s refer to as Dr. Pym).

Depending on how the events of BP pan out and what happens to Wakandan politics afterwards, I'm thinking T'Challa would make a pretty good Tony Stark replacement going forward. Especially if Tony does die in Infinity War.

It's a controversial idea among the MCU fandom for sure (a lot of things about Black Panther and Wakanda, and whether "white" characters should have the privilege of interacting with him, setting food inside Wakanda, and benefiting from his or Wakandan tech in general, even in fanfiction, tend to be hot button issues there), but as far as narrative devices go I think there's a lot of potential to be had.

setting food inside Wakanda

Wakandans are notoriously distrustful of waiters and waitresses.

I could see Strange as a reserve but yeah, he doesn't really work too well as an Avenger historically. It's usually because his powers make it hard for the writers to not have him immediately defeat the villains before anyone else gets to do anything.

He joined in the Bendis run, but after he'd be subjected to a storyline where Agamotto confiscated his cloak and other weapons, and then greatly reduced his powers.

I could see Ant-Man though. I mean, he seems like one of the people who'd have the least potential conflict. Does he actually do anything outside of putting on the suit?

It'd be interesting if Spider-Man were never officially part of any team, and each time a big team-up happened he has to be brought in from the outside. Mostly because it would be a fun theme if his approach towards the Avengers changes as he matures: he starts off as a kid super excited about it, as in Civil War, but as he grows up he becomes less enthused and more cynical about these team-ups, until he has to be convinced to commit to it - a la comics Spidey, who is always down to fight the good fight but barely ever takes stock in superteams.

Haven't we already established that he wants to be the friendly neighbourhood Spider-Man? Teams tend to be too big scale for him. Or too small scale.

He's going to be fighting Thanos, so he's not going to be unwilling to fight large scale battles. It's more that Spider-Man has always had personal reasons for resisting joining big teams full time (including, for instance, that they don't pay well enough, or at all, but also sometimes because he just doesn't think it's worth the hassle), and only fully becomes members of such things occasionally.

[up] Oh, I didn't mean that he isn't ready to pitch in when he is needed. But most of the time the Avengers are so focussed on the world-ending problems that they aren't really around for the smaller issues.

[up][up]And of course Spidey is still Marvel's most popular character of all time so I imagine they'd keep him involved in some capacity, even if it's just as a "reserve" Avenger. Especially if they really do kill or retire some of the original Avengers in A4.

I wonder if Wasp would sorta strongarm Ant-Man into being an Avenger. She seemed way more enthused about being a superhero than he did.
