Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

That's because the comic writers want to tell stories about high-school and young adult Peter Parker even though the setting is built around grown-ass man Peter Parker.

Which is exactly the same thing that would happen if a movie came out and was like, "Spider-Man got powers. TIME SKIP HE'S 30 TIME FOR THE STORY. Ahem. Once upon a time, Peter Parker could barely talk to a girl without stumbling over himself...."

It's sorta what happened with the Raimi films, only there, Peter's still technically supposed to be college-age at least. He just doesn't look it, because Maguire's Dawson Casting is really visible. So even though he's like 19, he looks 30 and that undermines his character when he acts 16.

The writers and many fans like Peter as a dorky, shy nerd who gets pushed around easily and struggles to get by in his day to day life, but when he puts on his mask, he transforms into a confident smart-ass ready to take on the world. That kind of characters is much more forgivable as a boy or young man than a distinguished man well into his career and adult life. When you try to write Adult Peter like Iconic Peter, you wind up with Obnoxious Manchild Peter.

This aside, I feel that the college Peter and adult Peter needs to be earned. I just had the same discussion regarding Nightwing. Certain stories only work if you lay the groundwork first.

A better look at Thor's axe.

I'm on the fence about that thing, honestly. On the plus side, it'll be nice to hear how you're supposed to pronounce Jarnbjorn without sounding completely ridiculous. "You have transgressed for the last time, foul villain! I smite thee with the mighty Yarn Yew!" It'll fight right in with Mew-mew.

But on the other hand, it might not be possible to pronounce it without sounding completely ridiculous, which may undercut serious moments.

Wait, isn't Stormbreaker the name of Beta Ray Bill's axe-hammer, which looks just like that? Or am I thinking of Stormbringer?

Beta Ray Bill's hammer is Stormbreaker. There was also a Stormcaster which Storm used when Loki tried to make her the new goddess of thunder.

This is Stormbreaker. It's Beta Ray Bill's hammer, forged by Odin after he was deemed worthy by Mjolnir. Wielding Stormbreaker allowed Bill to have his own duplicate set of Thor powers, basically.

This is Jarnbjorn. After Thor lost Mjolnir, he took up this mighty axe as his replacement weapon. It had been his weapon before he had Mjolnir and became his weapon again after. It was forged by dwarves from mythic uru but has none of the special powers Mjolnir possesses; it's just a strong blade for Thor to channel his own ferocity through.

Thor's new weapon definitely looks more like the former.

Cue theories about Beta Ray Bill showing up in Infinity War.

Stormbreaker is in the Guardians of the Galaxy Disneyland ride. It looks different from the axe.

Black Panther is tracking for a 165 million dollar opening weekend.

LOL. Remember when people were claiming Marvel putting it in February was a sign that they were setting it up to fail or had no confidence in it?

And of course I’m out of town this weekend so I’ll have to figure out how to see it while in Chicago. Dangit!

Anyone else disappointed Marvel never released a Thor movie on a Thursday?

Uh... Odin's day would also be appropriate, sure, but more appropriate than Thor's day? For a Thor movie?

While the listed release dates are usually Friday, quite often the big films like Thor actually come out on Thursday. It's just called an "early showing."

They released all of them on Thursdays in Argentina (because all movies are released on Thursday here).
