Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

    Original post
Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

Yeah. As a comic reader, that is an accurate assessment of the character.

Did it really have THAT much hype behind it? I like it fine, but it's far ahead of MCU films that I feel like had better hype and marketing, as well as much less controversy after-the-fact.

The "controversy" only affected a small number of people in the audience. Most people had never heard of the Mandarin prior to the movie. That's why all the comparisons to it being like if they made the Joker a fraud or comic relief character fell flat. People love the Joker and wouldn't like him depicted as such. But your average person doesn't give a shit about the Mandarin.

Ryan Coogler wanted Kraven to appear in the Black Panther movie.

See, the argument of Popularity Power makes me wonder if Spider-Man: Homecoming's box office (which was higher than any MCU film aside from the two Avengers, Iron Man 3, and Civil War) was more due to Iron Man or Spider-Man's presence in the film.

It was a big hit international, which seems to be one of the places where people aren't sick of Spider-Man yet.

It was both...Spider-Man is very popular in Asia.

Surely you mean Supaida-Man?

I really want them to establish that there's a knockoff Supaidaman in-universe in the MCU. Like, someone somewhere cashed in on his image without his permission for a major toyline with a giant robot, and being Peter "secret identities suck" Parker he is unable to see a dime.

I didn't know who the Mandarin was before I saw the film, so I had no real expectations either way except the ones that formed while I was watching the movie itself i.e Killian was probably the real villain and the "Mandarin" was going to get upstaged in one way or another.

Too bad Kingpin can't do that again, imo, that was a great moment in the comics.

I'd be more interested in either a Spider-Verse movie with Supaida-Man or Supaida-Man just exists in MCU Japan and his similarities to Spider-Man are either a complete coincidence or Yamato is a fanboy. Either way, Spider-Man and Supaida-Man team up and They Fight Crime!

In other words: the US is the only place people are sick of Spider-Man.

[up]According to the quoted post. They could be wrong tough, I just wanted to highlight how weird "international is the only place {x happens}" sounds. I mean, "international" just covers most of the world.

[up][up]There were a lot of people that viewed the Amazing reboot as unnecessary, and they'd been getting diminishing domestic returns for a while. The first movie back in 2002 did over 400 million domestically, while Amazing Spider-Man 2 only did 202 million over here. Homecoming was a pretty significant step up domestically, but still didn't do as well as any of the Raimi movies. Adding Iron Man and emphasizing the MCU connection was a smart move to at least differentiate itself from the 5 Spider-Man movies people had already gotten in the last 15 years.

Hmm, apparently Joe Robert Cole, the writer of Black Panther, first got involved with Marvel because they hired him to pen a War Machine spin-off).

I know Cheadle had discussed the idea of the film in the past, and his pitch sounded kinda interesting.

Garfield is a fine actor I'm sure, but the way his character was written in the Amazing movies was insufferable and made him impossible to care about, and when you add how undercooked/mediocre the rest of the movie was, ASM just falls flat for me. While I can understand people disliking Toby Macguire's portrayal and the Raimi films, I have always argued (and still would) that outside of a handful of positives, the ASM films were worse.

As someone who hasn't watched Homecoming but has watched all the other Spider Man films, the Raimi films dunk all over the "Amazing" duology.

Andrew Garfield is precisely the wrong person to play Peter Parker. When Tobey played Peter he could be a believable dork loser, while Garfield comes across more like a hipster who should be more popular than he actually is - as a result, I can't identify with him like I could with Tobey the nerd in the originals. Raimi's Spiderman also seems more like someone caught up with by a twist of luck while the Amazing duology seems to be trying to inject a Chosen One narrative into the story which is precisely the wrong fit.

I will say Amazing handles its romance partially better, at least from an acting standpoint. But everything else is just worse in some regard.

I never had a problem with Garfield being "cool" - that's small potatoes compared to him being a smug unlikable douche, and the narrative completely failing to sufficiently acknowledge that.

To be fair, I loathe Tobey Maguire in general and avoid movies he’s in because I think he’s creepy. So my preference for Garfield is more based on that than on quality of character writing. Also, Garfield and Stone were way cuter/better than Maguire and Dunst.

Thank you!!!! To me the Raimi movies were a giant let-down too (full disclosure: Never bothered to see the third one). Clearly inspired by the 1990s series (which I liked) but with less character development (and no movie should have less character development than a freaking cartoon show) The Amazing Spider-Man was flawed, but I actually enjoyed that take overall until they ruined it by brining all those Raimi-like elements into the sequel.

Homecoming finally works. Still think that they should have mentioned uncle ben in their aunt May/Peter talk, but overall, this finally feels like Spiderman.

High five!

I loved the 90s cartoon as a kid, and 9 year old me was hugely disappointed to see one of her snarky science heroes as some annoying kid who creeped on MJ.

Between that and my siblings only ever wanting to watch the not-great live action Batman films, I ended up irrationally hating superhero movies until Iron Man (I tried to watch Ghost Rider, thinking you couldn't go wrong with a flaming skeleton riding a motorcycle, but it turns out you could).
