Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

I'm 100 percent sure that's just Wanda wearing a coat. This is probably after the scene in the trailer where she and Vision are attacked by the Black Order.

Hair color isn't right. Wanda has dark hair. The person in the background has much lighter hair than that.

Even disregarding Wanda, Captain Marvel doesn't wear a coat.

I don't see hair. There's a gif set on tumblr; I see what looks to me like the bottom of a cloak and a leg. So considering that Vision is also there, my money's on that being Stephen Strange walking behind Steve (we see Strange, Stark, and Peter all together at one point).

Look under Captain America's armpit at 0:12. It's unmistakably light but long hair. You'd have to be blind not to see it really.

A couple of Black Panther reviews are now up with the RT score supposed to be up later today.

I am so freaking hyped.

IGN took their review down but it was also really good. Same score they gave Winter Soldier and the original Avengers.

I gave ANT-MAN a rewatch yesterday. It holds up pretty good. For one it's rare to see a working class hero on the big screen, let alone one who's 40 years old and with a kid. I have a lot more time for the short end of the stick Hope gets in this film knowing that the creators have vowed to do right by her in the sequal. Darren Cross is still a waaaay better villain than the character concept deserves to be. The final fight is just unbelievably fun.

The fight between Scott and Sam is really fun even though it's painfully obvious that neither actor set foot on the same set and the entire sequence was a last minuet addition. Fun though, if pointless.

[up]Yeah IIRC they said the writers and Paul Rudd went to see the Winter Soldier and loved Falcon so much they were like "Holy shit, we need this guy in our movie!"

[up]To be fair, Winter Soldier made Falcon really cool, which is impressive, considering I always saw comic Falcon as "Aquaman, but for birds, and without super strength."

The very best, like no one ever was. Check out my Spider-Man fanfic here! [1]

How is talking to birds not a cool superpower?

First, there are birds everywhere and they are gossipy fucks. Second, if you apply similar power creep as Aquaman got, Falcon could command the loyalty of dinosaurs.

[up][up]I think it's less the powers and more that Mackie is extremely likable and charismatic in the part. Seriously, his scenes with Bucky in Civil War were gold.

Black Panther got a 100% on Rotten Tomatoes, and the average review count is 88 out of 100 for Metacritic.

HOLY SHIT. That's better reviews than what Logan got.

Talking to birds seems like it would be a great power for pranks. Like we get a bunch of pigeons together and have them prank people in the park Hitchcock style, then celebrate with some bread loaves for them.

Anyway, the RT score for Black Panther is up but I expect it to shift quite a bit in the next few hours.

Talking to birds is liking to fish, everyone mocks you for it

poor Aquaman

> First, there are birds everywhere and they are gossipy fucks.

Unless it 's in the Corvid family I wouldn't rely on birds for intel

It was once commented that between the Falcon and Ant-Man, the Avengers could basically have eyes on almost all land surface.

If you just focus on punch times its not really impressive (although being attacked by swarms of ants or birds can't be fun) but as an intelligence gathering utility power, its really quite handy.

A superhero team needs those utility powers.

[up] Real life intelligence doesn't really matter for comics. Falcon makes good use of pigeons as unobtrusive spies

He can use the psychic link with birds to see through their eyes, which is helpful for spying. On at least one occasion though he admitted that relying on bird gossip is hard because the avian brain has no concept of time.
