Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

Reminds me of something wanted to confess. So, I had been thinking for a while that in that car scene, T'challah's Mission Control was Nakia, not Shuri. Largely because I thought that the actress was the main female lead/love interest, which character-wise I would have expected to be Nakia and not Shuri (given that she's his sister). But thinking about it, I wonder if Nakia hasn't appeared as much because she is going to do a Face–Heel Turn like the comics. And not that every main needs a love interest, but I wonder if he and Shuri are Not Blood Siblings.

Extremely doubtful given Shuri is stated to be 16 years old, somehow.

I think that's the other reason I was confused. Because when hearing discussion of Shuri as a child prodigy, the person in that scene didn't seem to be a child.

Letitia Wright is 24, so Dawson Casting is in full effect. That said, Lupita Nyong’o is 34, and Chadwick Boseman is 40, so Nakia is WAY more age appropriate.

Side note: HOW IS CHADWICK BOSEMAN 40?!?!?!?

41, actually. He's on the same anti-aging juice Paul Rudd is, I assume.

Wait. Chris Evans is 36, Chris Hemsworth is 34... how. How?! He looks the same age or younger than both of them!

[up]The Other Wiki says 40... :P

[up][up]To be fair, Evans is playing someone who's 100 years old.

But seriously, Chadwick Boseman is 41? What?

This song needs more love.

Dave Bautista is 49. I think that this is part of the reason why some people get annoyed when they continue to cast younger actresses to play their female heroes actually.

Isn’t Scarlett Johansson (33) oldest besides Lupita?

-googles- NOPE.

Cobie Smulder is 35. Natalie Portman is 36 (she’s older than Hemsworth???)

Hayley Atwell is 35 now, but was 27-28 during First Avenger.

Evangeline Lily is 38; Gwyneth Paltrow is 45; Elizabeth Olsen is 28; Brie Larson is 28; Zoe Saldana is 39 (wait, WHAT?!?!); Tessa Thompson is 34 (WHAT?!?!?!?!?).

Wait....Chris Evans is 36?

But then, in living years Cap is in his early 30ths too...let's see, born 1918, frozen in early 1945 (so with nearly 27) and he has been running around roughly since 2012...so....around 33......

He's hardly the only one. Keanu Reeves, Summer Glau, Ellen Page, etc. Patrick Stewart looked pretty much the same for like 25 years and only within the last few has finally started to show his age a bit.

...Up until just now I thought James Rudd was around the same age as Seth Rogen, not like 10+ years older.

...I thought Seth Rogen was older than 35, as well, admittedly.

I swear Samuel L Jackson ages in reverse. He looked older in Coming to America than he did in most of his subsequent career.

As a white person who had to show off her ID (and remember, drinking age in Germany is 18 - 16 for lighter alcohol) when buying the good stuff for her 29 birthday, this is the last thing I worry about. Some people age faster than others, that is all..

Of the current cast, Don Cheadle and RDJ are the ones which really start to push it. They need to retire soon for that reason alone.
