Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

I remember something about having to beat the shit out of him because his time god was, like, demanding that Brainiac be allowed to destroy the Earth?

The only thing I picked up from the last page is that Captain America will be using Thanos's severed head as his new shield.

Can't wait to see him throw it.

[up][up] Oh right, yeah, Nabu is Lawful Neutral, Lawful Stupid, Blue-and-Orange Morality or all of the above depending on the story.

Nabu's a Lawful Stupid Knight Templar. Think a little less time mage and a little more paladin/warlock, and boom, Doctor Fate.

They should make some massively-crossover Marvel/DC DLC for Injustice and add Doctor Strange, Doctor Doom, Doctor Octopus, Doctor Destiny, the Doctor and/or the Engineer, Doctor Manhattan, and Dream of the Endless. They could call it Is There A Doctor In The House Of Secrets.

Which Tony Stark wins unexpectedly. No one sees him coming, because everyone forgets that he has three doctorates; he's just not so pretentious as to have it in his superhero name.

Someone commented once that when Tony and Bruce smugly declare they have multiple degrees and doctorates, that really just says they have poor focus and can't commit to any one choice of study.

That's pretty clearly true of Tony, though I get the impression that Bruce's degrees are all interrelated, and possibly awarded for pioneering work rather than something he picked up by proximity because university is a great place to meet women.

Huh, interesting. I wonder if it's because he's the first major black superhero to star in a movie.

And, slightly more seriously, Blade?

One could argue against "major" in the first example and "superhero" in the second.

You could, sure, but I'd generally opt not to. Blade was important as a gateway between the fairly mainstream genres of action and horror and the then largely untested waters of movies based on comic books.

Kostya (Unlucky Thirteen)
#79694: Feb 1st 2018 at 5:49:34 PM

[up][up]That. I specified major for a reason. How many people have even heard of Steel or Blade? I think Black Panther is someone people have at least heard of. Comic movies are also a lot bigger nowadays.

Neither Blade nor Steel were designed to be blockbusters though. They were supposed to be action movies with a mediocre budget.
