Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

[up][up] I'm surprised they were even able to consider him in the first place, given the Bradleys are apparently off-limits due to some sort of copyright issues. Unless they mean the newer character who was made to reclaim the Patriot name.

That is probably what the meant considering how Iron Man 3 was able to use the Iron Patriot apart from Osborn.

Additionally, and perhaps tied into the mid credits Stinger, while I don't think Tony Stark necessarily will appear in the movie proper, I wonder whether some of Burch/Ghost's stuff will involve targeting him. With the result that through Tony pulling some strings, Scott gets a pardon and an invite to the Avengers, even if Tony can't remember his name.

I'm pretty sure if it came from Tony, Scott would reject it on principle. Or Hank would make him do so. You know how they all feel about the Starks, and Tony's on that list as well.

There is also the tiny fact that Agents of Shield already used the Jeffrey Maze version of The Patriot.

I don't think that would've precluded them from using the Eli Bradley Patriot.

Probably just trolls but some DC fans started a Facebook event to give Black Panther a rotten audience score on Rotten Tomatoes[1]

That's already a stupid idea. This movie is an especially stupid target for it.

If you're going to be insane enough make a campaign to discredit the movie being tauted as a pivotal step forward for racial representation in Hollywood, it's probably not a good idea to step into that quagmire for petty reasons.

Who the hell even cares about the audience score at RT? Especially the ones for Blockbuster movies are always manipulated one way or another.

Honestly RT should deactivate the feature; it's just too often manipulated by racists and misogynists.

@last page. I never thought about it before, but you're right about Ghost being a great shadow archetype for Scott.

I'm still surprised and very pleased that they went with Ghost. I really wanted them to, but somehow I didn't think they actually would.

Absolutely not a character I'd expect. Really obscure villain from Tony Stark's rogue gallery? Woah.

[up][up]He was a member of the Thunderbolts for a couple years in the comics and he gets a lot of awesome moments there, but other than that, yeah, that's about it.

[up]Also that.[nja]

Can't these jerks just let good movies be recognized as good? First The Last Jedi, now this?

Quite the opposite. It's only a good idea to step into that quagmire for petty reasons. People with discriminatory agendas have long since learned to mask those agendas in reasonable-sounding rhetoric. For instance, "I don't hate women, I hate reboots." It's a helpful recruiting tool, because then it makes your complaint sound reasonable and gets other people who wouldn't sign onto the agenda but agree with the rhetoric to pick up your flag and carry on your crusade.

Consequentially, I cannot even be remotely surprised to hear that a movement has emerged going, "I don't hate black people; I hate Marvel! DC fans, let's crush these n-----s!" I have no doubt that a ton of people are going to jump onboard the bandwagon, go "Yeah, DC rules!" and never once think about why they didn't do this for Civil War.

Eh, I am a staunch advocate for more female representation, but I still have an issue with both the Ghost Busters and the Oceans 11 reboot...in the case of Ghost Busters my issue was that I felt they didn't try to do their own thing enough from the get go, in the case of Oceans 11 it is that I don't see why this has to be named after what I consider an offensively mediocre franchise. It feels lazy to just give the females the hand-me-downs of male dominated franchises.

Same with Superheroines, btw. I like Batgirl and Supergirl well enough in certain incarnations, but I also prefer the ones which aren't just the lesser versions of the male original (and don't have "girl" in the name). That's what I like about Captain Marvel, that she is the better version compared to the Male original. Or at least the more popular and/or enduring.

Anyway, black Panther....I expected some push back eventually. On the top of my list are the ones which will complain about Marvel going all SJW (check), the ones which will claim that Black Panther is just a gimmick (check, I guess) and now I am expecting the ones who will feel that Black Panther disrespects various African countries by mixing stuff together from various, wrongfully representing Africa as one big continent (not checked yet, but I would be surprised if that and the question if the movie is cultural Appropriation won't come up sooner or later).

And that is before we get to the usual fanboy war and the general Anti-Disney cruscader - who happens to be particularly in arms since the merger was announced.

Fuck Rotten tomatoes. It was designed as a tool to analyze how many critics liked or disliked a movie vs how many audience members liked or disliked a movie the movie's overall quality . Now it feels like people are taking the scores too personally.

That's actually a pretty recent thing. She's only been Captain Marvel for a couple years.

For decades after Captain Marvel's death, she was the derivative Ms. Marvel, just like Batgirl, Supergirl, etc. The Captain Marvel name was given out to a bunch of different characters while she was repeatedly snubbed and left to rot as the Distaff Counterpart to a corpse.

For a long time, her powers were more famous than her. They comprised a huge chunk of Rogue's pop culture presence. Outside comic readers, if people knew Carol existed, they mainly knew that Rogue janked her powers, killed/hospitalized her, and became everyone's favorite X-Man.

It's only in recent years that Marvel's made a push to improve her visibility and finally gave her the Captain Marvel moniker.

[up] I know...but it is not like the male Captain Marvel has been around the whole time.

[up][up] I think RT was mostly designed as a review aggregator, the audience score is just there because the website gets more visits when people have the feeling that they contribute.

[up][up]on the other hand, they also kind of screwed over Monica Rambeau the first female Captain Marvel and one of the few high tier powered African American female characters in Marvel.

So while Carol's push is great, it also came at the cost of a woman of color and one of the few women and poc to lead the Avengers.
