Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules
still apply.
- This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
- While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread
. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
- Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.
If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Having Shuri be smarter than Stark isn't really a big issue because it's unlikely they'll have any extended interaction. Having too many characters with overlapping abilities or skills is really only a problem when it begins to make the others seem redundant.
An instance I immediately thought of is the Beast example mentioned in the Power Creep, Power Seep section, where the Avengers books historically downplayed his intelligence because the team already had Iron Man, Hank Pym and Black Panther.

It was actually a plot point that led to an insecurity spiral that Beast eventually cured with tons of casual sex
Forever liveblogging the AvengersApparently in the Marvel universe!
Mobs of women would come up to Beast on the street and invite him up to their apartments
Tigra got the same but creepier when she first joined the Avengers too
Forever liveblogging the AvengersOther than the recent Lexus commercial, it looks like a new Black Panther tv spot will play during the super bowl and a tv spot for Infinity War [1]
While Shuri being nonspecifically smarter than Tony is cool and totally fine as a general statement, I agree with the people who dislike the idea of her being the "smartest person in the whole world period" or that such a list even exists for a grand unified metric that by all rights should not be this easy to quantify, and that it reeks of shitty DBZ Power Levels. Now if she was just the most talented roboticist or neurobiologist-cum-programmer in the world who exceeds Tony Stark that would've been totally fine. But as it is, it's a bit corny. Chuunibyou, even.

Dunno if this has been posted/seen yet. First look at Captain Marvel. [1]
I don't approve of the lack of red in that outfit.

Well both Tony and Shuri are generally engineers, right?
it has been and I think it's supposed to be a shout out to Mar-Vell's green and white costume

Forever liveblogging the AvengersWell a third
"Credit" can be split between Tony, Bruce, and Thanos
Forever liveblogging the AvengersWell that's kind of a thing in the comics as well, Tony get blamed for things even when it's not really his fault (or at least he takes 100% of the blame when others were actually partially responsible as well).
Also Shuri had the luxury of growing up around tech that was FAR more advanced than the stuff Tony was working with. So she had a leg up on him from the beginning.
And as others have said, t's this DBZ-power up attitude of "I have to make my own character look good by claiming that they're the bestest best at everything" idea that annoys me. I mean credit where it's do, at least the Ant Man movie didn't try to claim that Hank was the smartest guy in the world, because they didn't need to.

So I just saw Thor: Ragnarok. Man, I was aching for a "main" MCU film (as in, not Got G or Ant-Man) that didn't take itself so damn seriously. I had a blast from start to end.
Dopants: He meant what he said and he said what he meant, a Ninety is faithful 100%.It's a ton of fun, despite the clash between the tragic plot elements (Odin's death, the revelation of Asgard's history as an evil empire founded on conquest, the destruction of Asgard) and the comedic tone. In terms of actual events, it's the darkest Thor movie; in terms of tone and style, it's the most comedic and lighthearted.
Contast Winter Soldier, which had serious events (with a similar story, based around the hero realizing unpleasant truths about the organization he served and having to destroy it) combined with a serious tone; or Ant-Man, which had low stakes and a humorous tone.
I still find Thor Ragnarok better than Ant-Man by a wide margin, but the clash between plot and tone weakens both the dramatic elements and (to a lesser extent) the comedic ones.

It was okay...I liked the Gladiator part of it and I liked the Ragnarok part of it, I am just not sure if I liked those two together and I certainly was frustrated with the unwillingness of the movie to allow me to grief about anything.
That's why I prefer Got G (both movies). They are fun, too, but if something sad happens, the movie gives me time to feel sad - and as a result, the funny moments are even more funny.
Plus, the humor in Ragnarok was a little bit too predictable and self-referential for my taste.
Ragnarok was what GotG 2 should have been in my opinion. I really liked the moments in Vol. 2 that dealt with Ego, Yondu, Nebula, and the family theme in general but as far as the humor went it was a little too drunk on itself for my tastes. Ragnarok nailed the humor aspect perfectly.
This song needs more love.Call me crazy, but maybe RAGNAROK' shouldn't be the movie where you say "Let's make this the funny one."

My various fanfics.I'd have axed the entire character of Korg, because I consider it the height of hubris.
My various fanfics.

There's that one comic where Reed Richards asks for Hank Pym's help. When Pym asks why, Reed says "You're the foremost genius on nanotechnology and microbiotics. It would take me a week to reach your level of expertise."
