Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

    Original post
Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

The Infinity War Prelude came out today. Spoilers:

Shuri is working on curing Bucky of HYDRA's brainwashing and looks to be on the verge of a breakthrough, though he's still in stasis.

Ant-Man, Scarlet Witch and Hawkeye are no longer with Team Cap. Hawkeye officially retired and is back on his farm, and Ant-Man is back with his daughter in San Francisco. Wanda is seen with Vision (who now has a human disguise) in Europe.

Cap, Falcon and Black Widow are now traveling the world and fighting evil on the down low, going from country to country. I am guessing that is what was meant about Evans having the "spirit" of Nomad in this one.

Tony is back to being paranoid about that impending visit from Thanos, and is now working on a new project to try and protect the Earth.

The stuff about Ant-Man in particular seems to line up with that report last year about Scott being under house arrest in Ant-Man & The Wasp.

  • Rhodey: So they're talking about whether Spider-Man signed the Accords again.
  • Stark: Can't talk. Working on aliens.
  • Rhodey: Some people are pretty miffed about it.
  • Stark: People are always miffed about it. I've been hearing about Spider-Man signing the Accords non-stop since the airport battle. Just give it a bit and it'll die down.
  • Rhodey: I don't know, man. T'Challa made some pretty good points.
  • Stark: Yeah, well, he can....
  • Rhodey: Tony?
  • Stark: (slowly stands up from workbench, staring off into the distance)
  • Rhodey: Hey, Tony? You're starting to freak me out?
  • Stark: ...did...did he ever sign the Accords?
  • Rhodey: Who?
  • Stark: T'Challa. I don't actually remember him ever signing the Accords.
  • Rhodey: ...
  • Stark: ...
  • Rhodey: I mean, he had to, right?
  • Stark: ...
  • Rhodey: No, look, he had to. He sponsored the bill!
  • Stark: I don't think he did. I think he just showed up in cat armor and we were all weirdly okay with it.
  • Wilson: I wasn't. I thought it was freaky as shit.
  • Stark: You don't count. Also, why are you here?
  • Wilson: They didn't have my flight suit at the prison when Steve broke us out. I was thinking it was probably in an evidence locker?
  • Stark: Down the hall, third door to your left. No but for real, did he seriously not sign his own document?
  • Rhodey: I mean, we can look it up, but now that you mention it, I don't think I ever saw him sign it.
  • Stark: (sits down hard) ...was...was I the only one who believed in this?
  • Vision: (passing through) I believe in you, Tony.
  • Stark: Not what we're talking about, but thanks anyway.
  • Rhodey: So, uh...would this be a bad time to mention that I haven't signed it?
  • Stark: (facepalm)

Wouldn't Aunt May have to sign the accords, anyway? Since Peter's a minor?

She didn't know he was Spider-Man until the end of Homecoming.

So then Peter's signature isn't really binding either? He's a minor, who signed a government document, without his legal guardian agreeing to or even knowing about it? Yeah, I doubt that that would hold up in court.

Also T'Challa told Natasha that he did in fact believe in the Accords. He just didn't like a lot of the petty politics that were surrounding it.

I am not really sure if he believed in it or just supported his father. But even if he did, more or less the first thing he did after he died was not signing the accords, but putting on a suit in order to hunt Bucky.

Rhodey was in a way the one person who really believed in it.

I don't think Peter signed it. The conversation never comes up in Homecoming and you'd think having his identity on record somewhere would be a no-no. None of the other Avengers have secret identities, which is why we see them referred to by their real names by the public (Civil War has a news report referring to Cap and Falcon as "Steve Rogers and Sam Wilson of the Avengers).

Remember, as far as we know, Tony wasn't planning to make Peter an official Avenger at the time. He just needed some extra help to capture Steve's team. And in fact, it's a pretty significant plot point in Homecoming that Tony does not want Peter to be an Avenger, and encourages him to stay as a local hero helping people on the streets.

At the end of Homecoming, Tony does present Peter with a suit and official status of his own, which Peter refuses. He even sets up a press conference for him. So one assumes he would have had him sign the Accords then, had all gone according to plan.

Of course, in the comic Civil War, Tony set up a press conference for Peter too, and it involved Peter publicly unmasking and surrendering his secret identity in order to show support for the Registration Act.

So had things gone according to plan, it's possible that might have been a string attached to Peter officially becoming an Avenger. Anyone who's read the comics knows to be wary of the words "Tony Stark" "Spider-Man" and "press conference" being in a sentence together.

Given how much the MCU changed things from the comic though, I'm not really sure that the latter is any real evidence of what they might have done with the former.

And T'Challa likely doesn't need to sign it because, as a Head of State, he can't really be prosecuted short of declaring war on Wakanda.

I think Peter revealing his identity is more of an issue than an adult like Tony. I doubt he would have to reveal it.

It's clickbaity as hell. Despite claiming to be a way the TV shows are hurting the MCU as a whole, it never once talks about the films detrimentally suffering from things the shows are doing.

A more accurate title would be "6 Reasons Why I Think Marvel's TV Shows Are All Stupid".
