Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules
still apply.
- This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
- While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread
. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
- Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.
If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

The Black Panther social media embargo lifts on Jan 29th 10pm while the review embargo lifts on Feb 6th 9 am[1]
And Got G Vol 2 got nominated for best visual effects. But I have given up a long time ago that a MCU movie will actually win in this category. At this point they are pretty much a stable on the nomination list and always end up edged out by something else.
That's because they're superhero films. A lot of the old white guys who make up the Oscar committee just see those as goofy schlock for kids and adults with the mentality of kids, not true art.
My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub.![]()

That is kind of the point of good visual effects...you are not supposed to notice them. Well, sometimes you do because you know that there isn't a living planet named ego, but in general the best effects are those which could be reality.
Plus, I wouldn't say that anything in Got G Vol 2 blends in...the whole movie pops.
Rocket and Ego. And let's not forget Groot. But especially Rocket. I mean, they did the final shot on his face. You can only do that when your animated character is really convincing (which Rocket is, honestly, if Planet of the Apes wins this over Got G, I'll scream!).

Good special effects should help sustain the overall illusion. I wouldn't say you shouldn't notice them at all, though. But that's why it's good, in a way, that they're so confident about it. You get things like Ragnarok, with its candy-coloured Kirby homage, and the more incidental ship designs of GOTG, which I only wish we could've spent more time on, occasionally.
I loved GOTG 2, don't get me wrong, but Black Panther's the one I'm really looking out for in terms of design.
Most inventions in this area are made by Disney, especially now that they have both Lucasfilm and Pixar under their umbrella. They have the best in the business and always push forward...with the notable exception of the period between 1967 and 1980. They went a little bit lazy after Walt Disney died.
Found it
. Basically they invented a way of "bullet time" photography similar to The Matrix but more advanced, because the light is seemingly moving at normal speeds onscreen while the actors are slowed down. So the dynamic lighting had to move hundreds of times faster than normal in the span of a few seconds.
(Sound is horrible, but seriously, look at the lighting.)

Shuri's so excited! It's cute. It's hard to gauge from a single short clip but I hope they don't overdo the Expospeak in the finished movie.
