Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

That was kinda the point of the Tony Stank scene

Steve reached a hand out should Tony ever need it

[up] Exactly. The ending of Civil War basically showed that inspite all of the tension, fighting and broken trust the two heroes have there is still no heavy animosity the two have. Cap is sorry that the choices made have not only made him a traitor to his country but also destroyed his friendship with Stark. And base on how Stark reacted to secruity break in by Cap at the end of the film(which is kind of a good nod to the ending of The Dark Knight Returns), Tony while still have anger at Steve for protecting the murderer of his parents is willing to forgive him as he understands that Steve was just trying to protect his friend who wasn't in control of his own actions and after that scare with Roddey almost dying he doesn't want the same thing feeling to happen to Steve.

I just hope that Infinity War they continue the whole Steve and Tony Forgiveness plot as while Tony may have somewhat accepted the apology I think he still have anger for Winter Soldier after seeing the video of his parents death; so some point in that movie they should address that now that Tony have time to process.

. . . Wow, after writing all that I really appreciate the theme Civil War was going involving loss and revenge. It's basically the theme of Spider Man 3 done right.

A friend of my brother’s can grow a Steve Beard in about two-three weeks.

So... we shouldn’t take the beard as any sort of time reference.

[up][up]On the other hand it make the whole idea of breaking the avenger pointless cince they are going to forigve that easly next movie, but meh I start to dislike that movie more and more the more I think about it.

So, anyone think Rhodey is going to come back or what?, also if Tony dies, I feel that would be the perfect oportunity to introduce Ironheart as his replacement.

When I saw Doctor Strange I more got the impression that the production wanted to work with Tilda Swinton rather than anything specific to Ability over Appearance, she does a fine job but it's not as though the role was so meaty and complex that they needed to go in that direction or else the movie implodes. Funny enough, I would say Cumberbatch is similar in that regard, no one doubts his ability but the casting felt safe and, again, the movie didn't really need an actor of his caliber to support it.

As long as nobody can give me the name of an actor or actress which has the same eerie and ageless quality Tilda Swinton has, I can't be angry about the casting.

Anyway, Infinity War...I first thoughts that they intended to supress the timeline, especially since Ao S is currently moving very slowly forward time-line wise, but I am not so sure....btw, didn't Feige promise us a time-line? I am still waiting for it!!! He better doesn't back up from that promise!

Plus, I have the feeling that they will need one if they play around with the time stone....

Count me as another who thinks if they really wanted Swinton, they could have just ditched the Asian mysticism stuff and called her something else.

[up][up][up] Michelle Yeoh, for starters. They didn’t even try. Compare with the CW show The OA.

"We'd always written the character as a 14-year-old transgender F-to-M Asian-American, and when we gave our casting director Avy Kaufman that description, she said, 'We might not be able to find this person, so what are you flexible on?'" Marling told Vulture. "We told her we weren't flexible, so she finally took to the internet and posted some casting notices on various trans chat rooms and groups, and audition tapes came flooding in."

If the CW can find the perfect 14-year-old transgender F-to-M Asian-American actor through some minor effort, Marvel could have found a great older Asian actress. But they didn’t.

[up] Can we move on from the topic? It's leading us to nowhere.

So, anyone expecting Namor to appear by Phase 4?

Tony Stank: "Phew. Okay well victory came at great cost. For example, I died. Great loss to everyone. But we've defeated space forever and now Earth is safe for all time."
Namor: "Knock knock. Ocean calling."

They still would have been accused of erasing the Asian culture aspect.

The finished film didn't really do much with it outside of window dressing so that's not really a big deal.

[up][up]Depends on if the rights issues are untangled by then. Marvel supposedly has the character but there are issues with whoever had him previously (Universal I believe).

Well, it's because I'm wondering if they'll portray him as purely heroic or anti-heroic.

I’m gonna be really mad if we get a Namor movie. Why? Because we have, as I’ve said before, 20 male-led movies to 1 female-led movie. Make Phase 4 female dammit. They can have male-led follow ups in Phase 4 (Black Panther 2, etc.) but if we get new solo movies, I want them to be female-led.

Oddly, I didn’t realize how much this mattered to me until I saw Wonder Woman. That movie made me hyper for a month; I felt invincible. No Man’s Land mayyyy have made me cry. I’d like to feel that much catharsis from an MCU movie.

I’d really love to see a Valkyrie movie, whether focused solely on her or also as a female team up.

After Captain Marvel is established, I’d love a Ms. Marvel (Kamala Khan) movie someday, or a Netflix show.

Other than that? I’m not super familiar with the comics. I’d love if some minor Marvel heroine got the Ant-Man treatment. I think there’s issues with the rights for She-Hulk or I’d love to see a courtroom drama.

I'm in for all of that.

I know there's a distribution issue with any Hulk titled movie but I'm not sure whether it extends to She-Hulk.

I love Trish in Jessica Jones but we're probably not going to get her as Hellcat now and that makes me sad.

How bout The Mighty Thor? The Jane Foster incarnation of the character...if the backlash has subsided.

The backlash was overstated, I think.

Didn't Jane Foster Thor have pretty consistently good sales?

I kind of want them to make the Valkyrie movie a teamup movie. Instead of just having her it can be about her putting together a new group of Valkyries. It would be a good setup for an all female team since that seems to be a bit of a trend now.

Problem is, even ignoring whatever backlash existed over Jane Fos-Thor in the comics, she isn't really in a position in the movies to become Thor, since Portman doesn't seem too interested in coming back, and even if they recast Jane Foster has been seen as kind of a weak link in the movies.

Granted, I'm one of those people who thinks it's stupid for someone to call themselves Thor when they clearly aren't to begin with (Eric Masterson being an exception since he was actually pretending to be the same Thor), but I feel that selling audiences on this particular iteration of Jane Foster as Thor is more of an uphill battle than it'd be worth. Plenty of other fish in the sea, especially with the X-Men on their way home.

Michelle Yeoh doesn't have that quality at all. In fact, she comes off is very grounded and competent (which is why I was so p... off that he Star Fleet Captain role boiled down to dying, she was perfect for the role of the experienced leader, I would have loved to spend a season on her ship).

I am not sure what the matter with Namor is. There are a number of claimants involved. We just have to trust that the Disney Lawyers eventually solve whatever the problem there is.

Otherwise, there are few characters about which I would say "yeah, this one could lead a trilogy" on names alone. The Silver Surfer, yes, if they do one movie about his origin, one about him and Galactus encountering the Got G (or the Ravangers or the Nova Corps) and one about them coming to earth and Silver Surfer finally breaking free. But otherwise I expect Marvel to do team ups of known characters as well as team movies. Young Avengers or whatever. Also legacy characters. But not another Thor. This concept was always and will always be stupid, you either are Thor or you aren't. But I guess young Cassie could eventually follow the example of her father, and there might be another Ironman down the line.
