Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules
still apply.
- This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
- While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread
. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
- Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.
If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Okay I have got to hear the story behind this.
This song needs more love. They avoided it with War Machine (although in the process making him kinda bland), and Falcon ended up having a lot of characterization despite being the humorous guy. Out of Carol's cast Rambeau would be a good choice for The Lancer since Spider-Woman doesn't seem like she's going to be adapted any time soon.
Cool. Still would like to also see Jessica Drew as Carol's very close best friend. Basically though I'd like to have all of the Captain and Ms. Marvels. Except that one genocidal guy from the Cancerverse. Or were there two genocidal Captain Marvels?
@Very Melon- What do you mean by you people?
Sorry. Couldn't resist.
Well I have to confess I've only seen the first Iron Man movie (which had a different actor) and know of Cheadle!War Machine from the other movies, but I think he's a fairly interesting character. Age of Ultron had this kind of amusing idea of him as this guy who would be a super-cool badass in any normal situation, but was positively mundane compared to the Avengers, who were like a collective Always Someone Better. And while I feel kind of bad about comparing Rhodey and Sam because of the implication they are filling equivalent Black Best Friend slots on the Civil War "Teams", I do think it's very well done in Civil War how their seemingly similar backgrounds as both African Americans and soldiers and African American soldiers result in diametrically different ideologies.

He's more by the book than Tony is...but he's not so above it all on account of how even he thought "War Machine" is a cooler name than "Iron Patriot" or how he seizes a postman's honest mispronouncing of "Stark" to crack a joke at Tony's expense. (
)
RE: DeWanda Wise in Captain Marvel: yeah, I'll admit, my first reaction to this was "she's gonna be Monica Rambeau", but maybe it's too early to pounce like that.
Also, Captain Marvel is taking place in the 90's. If DeWanda is going to be Monica, how will they make it not awkward when Carol somehow gets put out of commission in time to show up in Avengers 4? Will she end up in the same weird situation as Carol?

What trait would you call 'loves the codename War Machine a bit too much'
Forever liveblogging the AvengersYeah, I agree. I never quite connected with him...and I positively dislike him in the second Ironman movie. Not because of the actor change (I frankly didn't even notice, that little of an impression he left from the first movie) but because he kind of acts like an idiot. He War machine temper tantrum comes a little bit from nowhere.
I kind of agree that the MCU never really brought Rhodey out of "Tony Stark's black best friend" personality wise, and didn't gave him that much prominence as a character despite many opportunities. Even when he does get a a role in plot, he comes off as rather flat because the extent of his characterization tends to be "the best way to Foil off whatever Tony is doing." Half the time he doesn't even really have motivations of his own.
He might have less appearances (iirc), and is probably the MCU's (if not modern comic book movies in general's) most textbook example of a Sidekick (he owns it very well, to boot), but Sam does feel like he has a lot more to him overall, is introduced and written with more personality, and as a result carries a scene better. If they really are adapting Monica as Carol's Black Best Friend (which I am wary of) I'd hope they would give her more of the nuance that went into writing Sam then the general lack of it that's gone into writing Rhodey.

Maybe there’s a psychic at Marvel who had the foresight to get Nakia out of the way now that they can potentially put Storm in the sequel.
