Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules
still apply.
- This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
- While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread
. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
- Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.
If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Once this part of the MCU is over they should fill in some of the gaps with comics showing some of what Cap's Avengers got up to, some of what Tony's did, some of what Cap and the Outsiders did
Let's expand this universe
Forever liveblogging the AvengersWell, Thor is still an Avenger, as they only waiting for him to come back from Asgard, wasn't part of Civil War, and The fact he still considers himself the stronger Avenger cements that.
In fact, Hulk thecnically is still an Avenger, only MIA. If they still want to be regardless of the Sokovia Accords, is another thing.

Beauty and the Beast doing that well is not that much of a surprise. I had it on my billion dollar list at the start of last year. One should never forget how important and beloved the animated version was, it is after all still the only traditional animated movie ever nominated for a best picture academy award and the only animated movie who managed a nomination before the list was extended to 10. And before Frozen came along, Bat B was Disney most reliable money maker.
The Marvel movies did as well as expected, well, perhaps I expected Got G Vol 2 to do a little bit better. But then I loved that movie.
So Nakia is a former love interest of T'Challa's. Hopefully they do a better job with her than Christine Palmer. And it seems like she's no longer a member of the Dora Milaje but just a spy, to avoid the kerfluffles with how the Dora Milaje are prospective wives and the "threat" of the king choosing one clan representative over the others as his consort is the only kind of blackmail that can keep the clans from going to war with each other.
That fact that she's a spy now, and was elsewhere when everything was going down with T'Challa specifically bringing her back for support sends up red flags. I think The Reveal is going to be that she was a double agent and has been working with Killmonger the whole time.

That the movie has Nakia being in a prior reciprocated relationship with T'Challa in the past before one of the two broke it off means that the Woman Scorned angle might not play into it this time. In the comics she was a Dora Milaje prospective wife, T'Challa kissed her under the influence of (I think) Mephisto which caused her to become an obsessive Yandere for him even though he regarded her as like a daughter since he was in his 40s and she was a teenager below the age of majority (Ross called her and Okoye "jailbait"). Then after she tried to kill T'Challa's then-girlfriend Monica Lynne in a fit of jealousy T'Challa dishonorably discharged her, causing her to slip into a funk after which she was found by his current arc villain Achebe and brutally tortured, then handed over to Killmonger who may have raped her or done something sexually to her, after which she became his ally in trying to bring down T'Challa.
Whole thing is a clusterfuck and I don't know if the current incarnation actually will get rid of the Woman Scorned aspect or the possibility she's basing her loyalties around who she's sleeping with, but it does seem like the changes to her backstory, while not the most immediately interesting, sound like an attempt to give her more agency as a character and possible villain. It also helps that Nyong'o and Gurira are in their 30s and Chadwick Boseman looks really young for his age so the creepy Electra Complex vibes are definitely gone.

Mephisto also made out with Daredevil in a bar on Christmas once
It's a different thread so I can bring this up again
Forever liveblogging the AvengersThey might be saving some Wakandan villains for a potential sequel. In the Infinity War trailer M'Baku can be seen briefly among the Wakandan army at T'Challa's side, indicating that any conflict they have in the Black Panther movie is at least resolved enough for him to fight with the rest of Wakanda against an alien invasion..
This is probably a good way to do it since it would avoid overloading the movie with too many villains who don't necessarily have much to do with one anothernote aside from being from Wakanda, while at the same time saving the sequels from having to sell the audience on a new character that is supposedly an important person in Wakanda despite never being mentioned before.
I think of all the Marvel villains out there, Mercy is the creepiest.
The Protomen enhanced my life. Most likely they'll have M'Baku be vaguely antagonistic towards T'Challa but behave as an actual antagonist, kind of like the Rosses in Civil War. Narratively he'll serve as a source of worldbuilding and exposition for Wakandan culture, and perhaps help out the actual antagonists in some small ways for now, then have him step up to proper antagonist later.
Most likely Klaue will go the way of Surtur and Crossbones, an early antagonist to set the story up but either stay in the background or be removed from the plot relatively early on.

Well Thor’s movies have never been huge successes so it’s not a surprise there, and Homecoming had to deal with Spider-fatigue. The only one I’m surprised didn’t hit a billion was Guardians 2.
