Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

I was kind of interested in Magneto as someone who has lived a lot of the 20th century in contrast to Cap and Bucky. And as I alluded to, despite having his own trope for character overuse, I do like the aspect of Wolverine being alive and active at various points between the 1800s and the present, even if he doesn't always remember it.

Not sure who could replace Hugh Jackman though.

Hugh Jackman was legendary as Wolverine, but if they recast him I want someone short and ugly, closer to comic canon.

Short and burly. Tom Hardy came to mind, but 5’9 is too tall.

[up][up]...that would just be terrible, the worst decision they could make.

I kind of want it.

Not really a big name, but after some thought, Tom Cullen came to mind as potentially having the right look.

They managed to make Elijah Wood the size of a Hobbit; I don't think an actor's height should be a factor.

I think they did that with forced perspective and not CGI.

Heights in general are not that big a deal. Boxes for people to stand on, camera tricks, etc have been used for a long time to basically make people think the actors are as tall as the director wants them to be.

Don’t forget that RDJ, Scar jo, and J Renner all wear lifts during filming.

Well, the character's supposed to be short and ugly, so that might be a more appropriate casting choice than you meant it to be.

Excuse me, Danny Devito is the most beautiful person to ever grace the visual arts.

On the inside, anyways.

You know, if you took the combined casts, effects budgets, and general competency of each of those films, it might result in a single halfway-decent movie.

...but it'd still be full of white people. Hrm.

Ben Grimm's Jewish, though I'm not sure if that's established in any of those films.

[up][up][up][up][up]Excuse you, I did not imagine Chris Evans as Johnny Storm, that was a glorious thing that definitely happened.

Weird how that was the entire movie though.

If we pretend these movies never happen we perhaps will not learn from their mistakes possibly
