Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

Eh, that's about all they have in common and even that is questionable as To y never actually wanted Peter to fight and in Homecoming we see him try to limit how much Peter can get involved in.

There's also the little detail about how Peter doesn't kill people and how Raiden really like killing people.

Also, Raiden was manipulated by the Patriots and he was a child soldier who raised by Solidus before they recruited him.

Hmm, maybe the other Peter would make sense as the Raiden analogue

They were both raised as combatants and grew to overcome that while serving as heroic mercenaries.

By giving him a brand new suit with a killmode?

A killmode that he literally can't access without hacking it or passing the rigorous training necessary.

Iron Man kills rather liberally. He assumed at some point Spidey would too.

But that should be to Peter's discretion. And at sixteen years old, he could already murder Tony with his bare hands, even if Tony was in the suit. You don't need to give Peter a kill-mode, Peter is the kill-mode.

Maybe he was going for a Gandalf style "True courage is being merciful" type thing? I also wouldn't be surprised if Tony just called it that as a troll gag.

Either way, Peter definitely wasn't meant to find out about it while still only 15.

I imagine it's there for Tony to activate on Peter's behalf if they're ever in a fight together as much as anything. Overriding control of someone else's suit to protect them as he sees fit seems very much in keeping with the kind of mentality that would think of putting a shield around the world. Tony has to do it all himself.

...Guess he has that in common with Thanos.

I can see Tony naming something as a joke, but I don't think there's any particular reason he'd hold off on adding lethal capabilities to the suit. High-tension strings wrapping around people, yanking them through the air with superstrength, frankly it'd be easier to kill someone than not.

Eh not too sure about that. Peter's lack of discipline combined with Tony's constant upgrades would put the fight in Tony's favor

Tony picks Peter for the Airport fight specifically because Peter can web up people. He just didn't expect that what was basically a family argument would escalate that badly. To be fair, he couldn't expect that Cap would turn up with a guy who turns giant.

And the kill mode, well Tony tends to be overprepared and it is not as if Peter is supposed to be able to access it easily

Isn't Thanos technically an Iron Man villain? Or is he is an Avengers villain? I know this also applies to Darkseid and Superman as the former wasn't really a Superman villain until that got retconed.

He first appeared in Iron Man but as part of a big crossover story that continued on through Captain Marvel, Avengers, and Daredevil oddly enough.

He's kind of an everyone villain, really.

The two heroes with the strongest personal connection to Thanos are probably Adam Warlock and the original Captain Marvel.

He was created specifically to kill Thanos, using the spirit of an Earth man that Thanos killed.

One thing I kinda feel sad about the MCU is we won't get moments like "The Wrecker gained his power when he was mistaken for Loki and given godly powers by the Norn Queen."

Speaking of, a while back I found a Wrecking Crew feat thread. It's really, really impressive XD "Piledriver with one attack takes out Nighthawk and Dr.Strange, Bulldozer takes out Luke Cage, and Wrecker ONE SHOTS the Hulk."

[up][up][up] Not exactly that, no....but if you are into really weird of the wall stuff like that, you get plenty of it in Agents of Shield.
