Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

    Original post
Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

How come they didn't just let Scarjo use her natural hair for Widow instead of a bleached wig? Unless they wanted the artificial look on purpose since it's implied she's supposed to be in disguise.

Particularly under Whedon, seems to have a thing for wooden badasses who communicate with the occasional sarcastic/quizzical remark. The Russos made far better use directing her as character/actress with a visible but distant personality.

But yeah, even so the type Scarjo's tends to be cast for is being "provocatively" blank and emotionless. IMO it makes her less than interesting as a character actress, except in the Jungle Book where it worked perfectly for Kaa.

I really think that we had enough characters fake dying in the MCU. I really don't mind the MCU not being too keen on killing characters, because that makes certain deaths even more heart-breaking, plus, I still think that death is the most boring of consequences. BUT characters dying and then being alive shortly after really p.... me off. It sometimes works (ie in the Winter Soldier) and I kind of don't mind it when Loki does it (even though he already did it twice!) since it fits his character, but do it too often and it becomes pointless. Peppers five second death is one of the reasons I dislike that third act of Ironman 3 so much.

And yes, I do think that the blonde hair is supposed to look artificial because if she would use her natural heir, that would make her red hair look even more artificial than it already does. The red is supposed to be BW natural hair colour after all.

Hey, she's made a surprisingly long career out of being studiously blank and remote. It may be more of a quality than a performance, but it's not nothing. There's a reason she's been hired for her voice as well as or instead of her looks.

And I think whoever said she might be going by Yelena Belova here might have a point. There's no guarantee she'll ever get her own movie, and a little background with another agent of the Red Room would at least give her some semblance of an arc on which to base a little drama.

She is able to hold her own with a bunch of actors how are either academy award winners or nominees. That has to count for something. Plus, it is not like she can't carry a movie.

I think the Russos' handling of her worked because they made the fact that Natasha is kind of a cipher plot-driven. The implication is as someone who has been trained from childhood to be a spy (which requires a bunch of disguises and assumed identities), she's intentionally been molded as a blank canvas that can be dressed up as something else when the situation requires it. Particularly in TWS, where she has the exchange with Steve where she asks him who he wants her to be.

There's also a very good deleted scene from Civil War where Black Panther insinuates that Natasha is so used to lying and subterfuge that she's incapable of recognizing sincerity anymore, which I really wish they'd left in the movie.

Safe to say, ten years on, that the experiment paid off.

I do still kind of wish for a Black Widow movie. She was good in TWS, and maybe she's mostly glib remarks and scissor kicks, but I'd like to see more of what makes her tick.

Thinking back to the conclusion of Civil War, the only movie it actually had any impact on seems to be Homecoming and possibly the background of Black Panther, since the other three movies all took place completely separate from it.

There was an idea, Whedon knows this, called the MCU Initiative. The idea was to bring together a group of of remarkable directors and comic-book characters to see if they could become something more. To see if they could work together when we needed them to, to smash the box offices that we never could.

You cannot firmly grasp the true form of Squidward's technique!

[up][up] The MCU. It is so easy to forget what a huge risk it was initially. Marvel had to put up the TV and Movie rights for ALL the characters they had left and THAN had to organise additional money because Ironman wasn't covered by the original deal. Also, nobody ever did something like this before. And no, the Universal Monster team up don't count. They happened when original characters had become already a punch-line and the studio was looking for some quick cash grabs. The MCU is something else due to it attempting an actual continuity. It was also incredible difficult to put a team together for Ironman. A lot of directors passed because they didn't want to be associated with one of those silly comic book movies. RDJ was widely considered a washed up actor who only got the job because he was cheap AND signed a contract which made him responsible for damages if he would fall back into his drug addictions during production. And the whole thing was shot without a finished script.

There is this tendency to act as if Marvel is a big bully to poor DC because it nowadays has Disney as backup, but in reality, Marvel is the underdog who managed to knock the champion out of the limelight.

I saw a post from someone who joked about how he's sure someone is gonna find a way to be mad about a country of black people playing a key role in helping save the world.

Anyway, with the scene in the trailer of Tony looking distraught after seemingly having lost to Thanos on some foreign world, I wonder if it's an intentional Call-Back to his nightmare scene from Age of Ultron.

I did find at least one post pointing out the parallels.
