Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

    Original post
Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

The only part of the trailer I didn't like was Thanos choke-slamming Spider-Man, and that's just because I don't want to see Spider-Man get choke-slammed by Thanos.

Vision will probably die in Part 1 and there will be a much more significant death in Part 2 like Iron Man or Cap. I'm leaning on the former.

The only character I expect to die in this is Vision. Maybe Rhodey because he's not as likely to cause a fan revolt as one of the other supporting characters. They'd probably save most of the big deaths for the second film.

[up][up][up]Yeah, I’m regressing to full fangirl “DON’T TOUCH MY SON” mode with Peter. He is a precious cinnamon roll and I’m gonna cry like hell if/when Thanos hurts him.

In Rhodey’s last appearance, he was paralyzed. Killing him now would be repetitive. Vision will probably die, but I don’t care and I don’t know if he’d be a big audience tear jerker. Never connected with him in Civil War, and I HATED Age of Ultron.

It would sort of thematically bring things full circle from Avengers 1, Tony pulls a sacrifice play again but doesn't get up this time

Fitting in a way since his space paranoia has driven so much of his behavior since Avengers 1

I think Tony’s death would be better to end Part 2 though. Bring things full circle.

If they want a sobbing, angry audience at the end of part 1... it’s gonna be Peter.

Only thing is if Peter dies it's already been known he's going to come back due to sequels and if it turns out all of them take place before IW 2 and/or he gets resurrected in that film it's probably going to feel like a repeat of Superman's death/resurrection in the DCEU.

Regardless:

1) The average movie goer doesn’t necessarily know all that or think about all that

2) Don’t lie; you’d still cry seeing Thanos kill Peter even if you had a signed note from Kevin Feige saying it was temporary.

[up] No no no. Trying that on Peter would be like a dickish move, have you forgotten how many people wanted Peter to be in the MCU for once and how well he's being received?

Yep. That’s why it would be effective. Everyone would lose their minds. Tom Holland is adorable and smol, everyone wants him here, so him dying would be a emotional nightmare.

Then they'll bring in Miles like some people wanted.

Don't want this personally, I'm just considering the possibility.

[up][up] But it would also feel cheap as well if they try to make it temporary, it's like if the writers just want to mess with you in every way possible all just for a good "laugh" and "trick".

Keep it to at least a veteran from phase 1 or early phase 2, but a recent one? Fuck no. That's cheap as fuck trying it on someone like him.

[up] Let that happen for later, don't rush it.

Just saying- maximum emotional impact would be Peter. Maybe end the movie saying the only way to get him back is to get that gauntlet (thus giving audience hope).

If Tony dies he needs to stay dead. The symbolism is perfect. But that should be in part 2. Maybe he sacrifices himself for Peter.

We know the original 6 Avengers aren't making it past Avengers 4, so I'm guessing the only death in Infinity War will be Vision (and they might pull a plot twist and bring him back, powered by an arc reactor or something like that this time).

I know it sounds callous but if MCU Peter died I actually wouldn't really care. Smol or not. Or Hawkeye. And to be honest Tony wouldn't really make me that sad either, but he's also been around in the MCU long enough that him being gone would still evoke an emotion in me since he's such a pillar of the franchise.

I don't expect all of the Avengers to die. They'll keep some of them around, most likely the ones who don't have solo franchises (yet).

I think it's already been confirmed that Peter's part in this film would be pretty small so I'm surprised they gave him so much focus in this trailer.

I wonder if the New York and Wakanda invasions are simaltanious? Or if one happens after the other? We see a Hulkbuster armour in Wakanda, and Bruce there was well next to it's arm, though he might be there after the battle. EDIT: just noticed Hulk is at the battle of Wakanda. So I guess the two battles don't happen simaltaniously.

Also, which stone is in New York anyway? Vision and the mind stone I guess. The time stone is in Nepal. We assume that the soul stone is in Wakanda.

Looks like the reality stone is the one Thanos gets first, which was in Knowhere with the Collector, but maybe that's been collected off screen. Thanos has the space stone by the time he gets to earth, so I think we can assume Loki has a bad day.

[up][up][up] I mean, I personally doubt they're going to show the moment of his death in the trailers.

Actually, that got me thinking - why is Thanos attacking Wakanda here? Assuming that they don't have the Soul Stone (which I find unlikely that they would possess, but maybe Black Panther will reveal differently), I'm going to guess that Vision will be badly injured by Corvus Glaive (I think that was his spear in the trailers) but manages to escape, the Avengers will take him back to Wakanda to help him, and Thanos will launch an all-out assault in response.

Likewise, Ebony Maw will probably try to take the Time Stone from Strange during the attack on New York, and it seems that Thanos will have already attacked Xandar and taken the Power Stone, with Loki having given him the Space Stone.

That leaves the Reality Stone (Thanos does not appear to have it with him when he fights Tony, and according to those leaked clips, it seems he missed it, even after attacking the Collector's lair) and the Soul Stone (still no idea).

We're getting a Homecoming sequel, and it's said to open immediately after Avengers 4. I'm thinking Tony dies and part of the film is Tony dealing with the pain of that.
