Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

[up][up] [up][up]How dare you. Too much, too much. I’m not used to MCU traumatizing me (bad writing and character assassination of Age of Ultron aside).

[up]x4 Plus the Spider-Man Homecoming sequel and Guardians of the galaxy: Volume 3 are already confirmed for Phase 4.

I think Kevin Feige is just saying that the MCU is going to be impacted in a fundamental way by the events of Avengers 3 and 4, and Phase 4 movies are going to reflect that change.

Hmm...maybe post-Avengers 4 movies will have superheroes as a more organized force, with sci-fic technology and interactions with aliens and other fantastical forces being the norm?

[up][up]I don't think it's going to be called Phase 4, though. I don't even think there are going to be anymore phases after Phase 3. I think it will be more like a "Victory Lap" movie plan.

Yeah from what I remember, they've said "Phase 4" will probably mark the time where they are allowed to experiment with subject matter, to the point it can hardly be organized enough to be called a proper phase anymore. Phases 1-3 mark the very very very long introductory arc and what comes after is the sandbox.

By the way who is the dark-haired lady between Maria Hill and Valkyrie and above T'Challa in the second batch of images? Also now that I'm getting a clear shot of it I'm loving Black W Idow's tactical gear outfit. It's an interesting departure from her sexy catsuit outfit in the name of practicality that keeps the same overall aesthetic.

I have the feeling that it will be a while before we see another Avengers movie after the fourth one, no matter with which line-up. If for no other reason that that it will pretty much impossible to top the attention that movie will receive and it might be better to not even try, but instead do a number of smaller team-up movies, exploring the world even further.

Also, the perfect ending for this would be if Tony gets his wish - putting the Earth into a state in which the Avengers are no longer needed as protection - but pays the ultimate price for it. This would mean that the world doesn't need the Avengers for a while, exactly long enough that the cry "Avengers reassemble!!!" comes at a time at which the notion is a giant draw for the audience.

meanwhile they could do secret invasion as ongoing storyline.....

Marvel's official Indian page (verified and everything; it's an official branch and not a fan account) ran an article with the headline "Ahead of the release of the Infinity War trailer, read up on the various Infinity Stones."

Marvel has twenty films slated after Avengers 4

Which, lines up which previous statements for the film slate stretching to 2027. If we're sticking to three films a year, and three years per phase, that's two more phases.

Regarding contracted ending; Bob Jr's contract ended in Age of Ultron's he's simply been working film to film, so I expect other members of the founding six to follow the same suit. I absolute expect Steve to die, and I very much suspect Tony is going to die to. But I expect Thor and Hulk to carry on as team up heroes who show up for cross overs (Like Hulk and Tony currently do)

I'm really excited for Phase 4, because it seems like it's going to be an era where the big players are gonna be people who were introduced after Phase 1. It's gonna feel radically different when event films like Winter Soilder take place in the Black Panther or Captain Marvel franchise.

Do I think that the MCU will get to 2027? Yeah. The Cradle of Life rule says that if you have a popular IP you can bank on two more films. (The IP ensures you get a big box office hall on the opening weekend of your first film, and that in turn ensures your sequal get's greenlit.) And sure 20 films is a lot, but that's only two films per franchise if they carry on the phase structure.

I think the MCU will carry on either until the industry makes these massive actor commitments and near constant productions infeasible, or until a single phase get's a generally poor reception; ensuring that the following phase, regardless of quality, looses out on viewership.

And if the brand looses favour, then that still means that some of the sub franchisees might stay bankable, so the MCU might just abandon the phases and continue with what ever is popular.

Personally I still need to see The Masters of Evil, Secret Invasion, and Dark Reign taking place. (Not that I'm sure I want to see Secret Invasion. I pretty much just want Thunderbolt Ross to be revealed to be a Skrull)

I'm honestly not sure how I feel about this. While I like the idea of them continuing indefinitely it would be nice if they had some kind of endgame. That's one of the biggest problems with the comics.

A long time ago I was of the opinion that the MCU should end after Avengers 3. Now, I'm not sure.

They've branched out too much now. Phase three introduced so many new characters that have already set up sequel movies. They're still making tons of money too. Ending it now would be a bad idea.

It's just not in the nature for film franchises to write endings. Not now anyway.

Also, that poster, is AMAZING.

It just would be a shame to end it after all the work put into it. And honestly, what do we have to loose? If whatever comes after Avengers 4 doesn't work, we can just appreciate what we had to this point and nothing which comes after will be able to destroy it. If it does work, though, those movies can take advantage of the giant world they are set in, and of various underlying themes already baked into the MCU.

Regarding the actors: I think it is time to retire RDJ. I enjoy him in his role immensely, but RDJ is not getting younger and it will become more and more unbelievable that a 50 year old guy (he isn't THAT old yet, but he will be if he is still around in phase 4) is flying around in a suit. Plus, the biggest mistake ANY franchise can make is to not letting go of stuff in time.

I also hope that Chris Evans will stay on. He has already indicated that he is interested and I have the feeling that it would be worth to see more of him. The only thing which speaks against it is that it would actually be cheaper for Marvel to just replace him with Sebastian Stan, who still has multiple movie on his contract (apparently he signed a nine picture deal AFTER The first Avenger, which means that, assuming he is in both upcoming Avenger movies, there will still be five movies on his contract after it). But should they do a Secret Invasion storyline, I actually want to see Cap being replaced by a Scrull and then coming back, because him having to deal with what the Scrull did in his name would be a really compelling storyline for him.

Plus, I can't get enough of Steve and Bucky and Falcon interacting with each other.

Scarlet Johansson has apparently a movie to movie contract by now, though she is very tight-lipped about it. I guess they will use her when they feel it makes sense. Her character can simply go underground for a while.

And Clint - I really like Hawkeye. But part of me feels that it might be time to introduce Kate Bishop to replace him.

I still contend the Civil War version of the BP costume looked much better. It's the only thing I don't like out of everything I've seen about the Black Panther promos, which is probably actually a good thing.

Hawkeye's been generally screwed out of any possibility for a Matt Fraction-esque movie but finding some way to introduce Kate Bishop and allow him to have some of his Fraction characteristics without fridging his family by having him serve as a distant mentor figure for young and upcoming Kate.

Yeah, the plan is really the best thing about it. And the most creative aspect of the movie. I am just not quite sure why he attacks Tony's home.
