Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules
still apply.
- This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
- While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread
. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
- Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.
If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

We already had Natalie Dormer cameo in the first Captain America. She's still my pick for Yelena Belova if they ever make a Black Widow solo movie.
For some reason Andrew Scott makes me think of a Large Ham villain. Someone like the Ringmaster or Mysterio.
The Leader already has an actor, the MCU has just given up on him as an idea thanks to their inability to make Hulk movies.
The first thing I thought of when reading Lucy Liu was Lucia Von Bardas for some reason, even though that doesn't make an awful lot of sense. Assuming no gender lift is involved (in which case the possibilities are limitless), she'd make a pretty cool Superia. Or Titania, in the tv series (since being in a Battle Couple with Absorbing Man is a must, and he's a tv only character thus far).
Actually, she'd make a pretty awesome Madame Masque too, but we already had one of those.

And the Hulk already had an actor before Mark Ruffalo, two of them. Tim Blake Nelson would be kind of cool to have back, but hey, as long we're fantasy casting and looking for a spot for Jim Moriarty...
Like, this'll never happen, but when I think of the Leader, I always think of Matt Damon. And I'm only half joking. Think The Informant.
RE: Jude Law in Captain Marvel: I'm tempted to say we're hitting Sherlock-ception...
(Not saying I disapprove this casting choice, I just think it's hilarious we'll be having 2 Sherlocks and 2 Watsons in the MCU.)
RE: Lucy Liu in a hypothetical MCU role: can Marvel use Viper? Or is she one of the more complicated characters because she's prominent to both the Avengers and the X-Men?

Honestly, this is really not that surprising....we also have a large chunk of the Lot R cast in the MCU. Just like most of the relevant British actors turned up in the Harry Potter movies, the MCU will eventually cover a huge chunk of the Hollywood talent. I mean we are now at a point at which academy award winners turn up in uncredited roles - I am ready to bet that this was just so that they could later say "yeah, I was part of this, too"!
Don't think I posted this (apologies if I did), but when I look at how he's drawn in the comics, especially in Secret Empire, I think Jared Harris looks a lot like Doctor Faustus. I men I definitely liked the take on him in Agent Carter as a Darker and Edgier Boris Badanoff, but if you wanted a handsome but sinister Psycho Psychologist, Jared Harris is your guy.
I think Taskmaster is a cool character, but as an antagonist or a Boxed Crook reporting to a hero, rather than a main character. Because one of his "things" is the fact that he's Only in It for the Money, and while not really malicious, is amoral, and so will occasionally do he right thing if it's in his self-interest. Which I think makes him rather predictable, because while the outcome might be in doubt (although honestly, he's going to do the bad things nine times out of ten), there's no difficult moral choices, since Taskmaster is always going to do what he sees as in his interest.
I was thinking the other day about my joking suggestion of Luis turning out to be Taskmaster and his myriad interests being a foreshadowing of Taskmaster's powers. However, it struck me that Taskmaster would never go out of his way to save people the way Luis does in Ant Man, because honey badger Taskmaster don't care.

I think Taskmaster would make a great protagonist for a live-action series. His powerset is perfect for a low-budget product and the serial nature of television would allow the story to build his skillset over the course of the show. It'd allow for great continuity-bonuses like Taskmaster taking down a dude in season 3, episode 5 with that cool maneuver he picked up from that asshole in season 2, episode 18.
My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub.Oh my god, I found the best article from 2008.
Top 10 comic book characters who should never be in a movie.
4 out of the 10 have been in movies, and a large number of the honorable mentions have gotten roles in the TV shows.
I still remember that Cracked "comic book movies that must be stopped" article that included Thor and Ant-Man, and - my person favorite - also mentioned Namor with some insane logic that amounted to "Namor is essentially a blond copy of Aquaman, and Aquaman is useless, so Namor is useless, and thus making a Namor movie is a stupid idea," none of which makes any sense.
Years ago I read an EW article where they had an editorial from an author who wrote about the plague of superhero movies and talked about how Marvel had greenlit Ant-Man, and used that as evidence we were about to get superhero fatigue and that this whole house of cards was about to come crashing down.
This was 2010.

Jared Harris would've made a pretty good Vulture, I think. Maybe Justin Hammer if they hadn't made him so young — too bad they're both already taken. He'd make a good MODOK, too, but I say that about everybody.
