Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

[up][up] Yeah, the MCU heroes all seem like fundamentally weaker, kinda-less-cool versions of their comic book counterparts.

Although Cap's team seems kinda woefully underpowered for fighting a Thanos-sized threat.

I don't think Cap's team is fighting Thanos. They seem to have it structured so that there are multiple fights taking place in multiple locations. Cap's trio looks like they're fighting some of the Black Order and then later in the trailer they're helping Black Panther fight some of Thanos' goons in Wakanda.

Agents of Shield already did the whole House of M plot, though I actually think that a loose adaptation could work for a Vision and Wanda movie.

Anyway, Cap is pretty much undefeatable. Well, you can kill him, but I wouldn't even bet on him staying dead. He would just walk it off and inform you "I can do this all day." His true Superpower is pure stubbornness.

Also, there is also team Thor and the Got G.

That was far from the first or last instance of the 'House of M' plot, and what happens in AOS stays in AOS. The Framework was well-handled and I enjoyed it, but I wouldn't rule out Disassembled for the MCU because of it. If even Inhumans ignored AOS, I don't expect the movies to get back in touch anytime soon.

Regardless, I was partly joking about Wanda, but it also wouldn't surprise me if her ill-defined powers do turn out to be much greater than we've seen so far.

I forget, do we know who's playing the Black Order?

Shuri's so cute, I have a feeling she might be a breakout in this movie. Also I like that we can see the (superior looking) Civil War suit in Shuri's lab. Teasing us, taunting us. I don't remember if it was made obvious enough that Shuri designed it in the first place?

[up]The Irish actor Tom Vaughan Lawlor is playing Ebony Maw. That's all I know.

And yes shuri is adorable.

[up][up]Terry Notary is playing Cull Obsidian/Black Dwarf, but he's doing the motion capture, I'm not sure if he's voicing him too.

Shuri didn't create the Civil War suit,T'Challa been using it for 10 years.

Sneak peak for Ao S:

It's the same one Brazil already leaked, but here is an official version in better quality.

With every other show I would be nervous because that is very different from what we have seen beforehand, but Ao S has hopped genres before and they always turned it into something amazing. It's truly the show where tropes go to die.

[up][up]Yes that would explain the new suit being able to do so much more than the previous one.

Given her MVCI incarnation will have them I take it they're going to treat this as an essential part of her "kit" from now on? Strange because that's typically more of Mockingbird's deal.

Heroes who have some sort of memorable prop item are easier to merchandise, so that's probably part of it.

EDIT: Yes Google is telling me they do indeed make toys of the batons now, so I guess that settles it.

The trailer for Infinity War will show up online before Star Wars: The Last Jedi, but will also appear before The Last Jedi in theaters.

Prepare your butts.

In other news, I came back from watching Thor: Ragnarok with family. Holy gutterballs, was it worth the hype! And also holy eff, Thor's about to get rekt by Thanos...

Even without the comedy it certainly did its job of Rescuing Thor From The Scrappy Heap personally. I'm going to feel really sad now if/when Thanos kills him.

I didn’t see Daredevil Season 2, because it sounded too grim for my taste. Kinda disappointed they’re continuing that by doing Punisher.

Best thing about the tv shows is that you don't have to see them all. I never bothered with Agent Carter, for example.

Yeah, I appreciate how they build off each other but you don’t have to see all of them.

Haven't started the new series yet, but at least in DD Season 2, this was a remarkably human take on the Punisher. Season 2's fairly gruelling in other ways, but I'm inclined to say Season 1 is actually the grim-and-grittier of the two. You might be surprised.

I am a few episodes in, and in this case you need to see Daredevil season 2 or you are missing huge chunks of the story.

The nice thing with DD season 2 is that the excellent Punisher arc, early on, comes to a rather satisfying end after, what, four or five episodes? This way, you can quietly skip the messy Hand plot without missing out on much.

You can read summaries of the next episodes without missing much content really. You'll keep a better opinion of the show this way.

I've got too much going on today to watch Punisher, but I'll definitely start it tomorrow.

You cannot firmly grasp the true form of Squidward's technique!
