Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules
still apply.
- This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
- While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread
. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
- Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.
If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Sometimes, but I'd actually disagree that this is one of those times. His liveblog itself were his reactions in a vacuum, but for the conversation itself it often takes two to tango - and this particular conversation came about not just because of his criticisms, but also because of people deciding to make an issue out of refuting those criticisms.

Why don't we talk about something else?
What will our spoiler policies for Thor Ragnarok be for this thread? I'm planning on seeing it tomorrow, so I don't really have to worry about it for myself, but I do think we should set the record straight regardless.
Oh God! Natural light! As I understand, there's a two week standard for spoiler-texting when a new film comes out.

You know what? I guess I am. The show already has the Mighty Whitey stuff, alongside other Unfortunate Implications, without taking scenes out of context to add fuel to the fire.

I don't think Danny had any ill intentions, but it doesn't actually matter. It wasn't implied that the dinner itself was the guilt trip - buying the apartment and securing her rent was, or at least that's how it comes off as, and all this to get her to agree to tag along on a dangerous mission where she'd be risking her life, even if it IS ostensibly for a good cause.
Bear in mind that I don't think Danny was actually consciously trying to guilt trip or blackmail her, but the scene as presented just doesn't read well. The issue is that Colleen, and the show by extension, mostly just glosses over how invasive and presumptuous this behavior is.

Something doesn't become immune to being accused of insensitive writing just because it has a certain degree of different insensitive writing.
This, in particular, is why trying to come up with in-universe explanations for it is only going to help to an extent. The problem isn't that Danny is, himself, a sexist or a chauvinist, it's the way his and Colleen's character arcs and interactions are written. That the character isn't intended to be that way is part of the problem.

Y'know, it's funny. Back when Iron Fist was originally announced, a bunch of us were upset about the decision to play Danny's Mighty Whitey qualities completely straight. We were basically told to shut up because you can't criticize something that isn't out yet, because you don't know if they're going to do something in the show that justifies the contentious point.
It was never clear what, exactly, they were supposed to do to rectify Danny's whiteness beyond having him at some point spontaneously cease to be white. But that's what we were told.
When I started doing the Iron Fist episodes, I wanted to have a running joke in response to that where at the end of each episode, I'd provide a running tally of how many episodes Danny has continued to be white in. For added absurdity, I was going to keep that tally going not only into Defenders, but even into shows that Danny doesn't even appear in such as Punisher. It seemed hilarious to me.
But then about three or four episodes in, Danny managed to upset me so significantly that the tally stopped being funny, because to be frank, being white is the least of his problems.
My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub.I'm still debating on whether or not I should see Ragnarok.
I mean, I think I'd probably get some enjoyment out of it but i'm really far behind on the movies - I haven't even seen Civil War yet lol - and I don't actually want to watch Dark World.
Here's what you missed from the Dark World....
Thor's mummy died.
It gave Loki a sad.
Watch Loki have a sad and a snark for two hours.
Also, there are dark elves? Somewhere? With laser guns?
Also, Natalie Portman's last-ever appearance in a Marvel film. So that's a thing.
My various fanfics.I don't want it to be immune from criticism. Iron Fist is poorly written and sloppily plotted with inherent Unfortunate Implications in the premise and bad fight editing. I just don't like people having criticisms that are addressed, explained, and/or covered in the show itself. It feels like the show's being misrepresented.

That is pretty much a perfect recap of Dark World. Nothing else to say, really.

In universe problems can only cover what are ultimately out-of-universe problems to an extent, and with an issue like this they're barely capable of even that. If the scenes and the characters are poorly conceived and outright insensitive, they can throw in excuses in-universe after the fact, but that doesn't change the fact that the actual writing/directing/etc is poor and needs to change.
You yourself said some inflammatory things two pages ago as well. The thread was willing to move past that and continue conversation. Are you willing to do the same?

Also, something to do with the Infinity Stones, although it didn't seem to do anything different from the others (except for time) beyond the nebulous "Make strong and make things go boom." Also, it wasn't a stone. It was Infinity Kool-aid.

My various fanfics.I'll probably check it out this weekend. I usually go see Marvel films opening weekend.
I've heard really good things about this one, so I've got high hopes. ^.^

I agree that Iron Fist is rife with Unfortunate Implications, but I also think that most of the specific scenes brought up have clearly explained justifications that are being ignored so the scene can be taken out of context.
Danny ignores Colleen' instructions and beats up her students in defiance of her!... because he thinks she's not strict enough of a teacher.
Danny forces a huge romantic dinner on Colleen to guilt her into doing something illegal with him!... because that's Danny's idea of a casual meal with friends because he's an emotionally stunted rich twat with no sense of context. The size of it was meant to be a joke on how he doesn't understand how normal people eat.
