Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

I wish i knew what you guise were shouting about

Basically: There's a manga called AKIRA. In 1988, it got an anime movie adaptation that's said to be not just one of the greatest works of anime ever, but one of the greatest works of animation period.

For who knows how long, Hollywood has been going left and right about doing their own live-action take on AKIRA. Because their last two attempts to adapt anime to live-action turned out so great.

Then a while back, there was word that Taika Waititi would take over the AKIRA adaptation, though nothing's set in stone. However, Mr. Waititi talked about how his take would be Truer to the Text and have more stuff from the manga that the anime film didn't have.

However, any further conversations regarding AKIRA by Taika Waititi should go over here.

[up] Marvel released a piece of official concept art of Thor from Infinity War wielding his axe from the comics. However, things are a bit tricky, since he still has his long hair and is wearing his old costume from Age of Ultron, whereas the trailer and promotional art for Infinity War have confirmed he gets a new costume and has his short haircut from Ragnarok. So either the concept art is just flat-out incorrect, or he really does get his axe, and the artist just drew it before he knew Thor was getting a Traumatic Haircut.

Someone on Reddit noticed a formula of how the first trailers for the last two Avengers movies came out, thus possibly giving us a possible idea of when we'll see the first trailer for Infinity War.

Another note:

Other users pointed out that Marvel could be holding the trailer to release when Thor: Ragnarok hits theaters or, if they don't directly release it with that film, they may hold it until Ragnarok has been in theaters for a few weeks just in case there's something in the Avengers: Infinity War trailer that might serve as a spoiler for Thor: Ragnarok — a real possibility considering that it's frequently been said that Thor: Ragnarok sets up for the third Avengers installment.

That bit about Infinity War's trailer spoiling Ragnarok has precedent. Didn't some people who saw the trailer at D23 say something about Thor slamming onto the Guardians' ship's front window? Sounds like something I wouldn't want to see until I find out what happens to Thor after Ragnarok...

These formulas are useless because Marvel will sometimes pull a Beyonce and just drop the trailers whenever, like they recently did with Black Panther. And given how they've said repeatedly that the ending of Ragnarok leads into Infinity War in some way, I have a hard time imagining they'd attach a trailer to the movie that effectively spoils the ending.

The trailer will come out when it comes out.

And the second and third trailer will utterly spoil the movie's overall feel and probably provide too many details about the plot, but hungry fans will watch them anyway and then write blogs about how boring the film adaption of a 30-year old storyline available was.

[up] Shouldn't a trailer do its best to demonstrate a movie's overall feel? I would think that you'd want to give the audience a good idea of what to expect going in.

No surprise (almost everybody already figured it), but Captain Marvel will be an important lead-in to No the fourth Avengers movie 4 ala what they've been saying about Ragnarok and Black Panther leading into Infinity War.

“There are a lot of discussions, they all focus on the post-Phase Three, ‘Avengers’ 4 film, so nothing that we’ll get into publicly,” he recently said in an interview with Indie Wire. “We’re really focusing on ‘Captain Marvel’ and the work that Anna and Ryan are doing. It’s going to be a big part of heading towards this epic conclusion and epic finale of 22 movies over the course of 10 years. That is focus for the next six movies we have to finish and get out.”

The Defenders, Episode One

We open on a swordfight in Cambodia. I don't know where I expected to start but this definitely wasn't it. God, I hope that's Colleen Wing; she deserves a fight scene like this.

Nope, judging by the fact that I'm pretty sure that's Danny Rand who just shoulder-chucked her, it's probably not Colleen.

"Heyyyy! Go!" Running up to shout useless advice while not actually getting to participate much in the action? Yep, that sounds like Colleen.

Danny chased the woman into a very dark dead end with a single light source and then walked into the room, looking around confused. If she blindsides him from one of the sides where she's concealed in the dark, I will be so happy because ninjas.

SHE DID! She was totally lurking in the shadows and nailed him from behind after he gave up the search! That is a goddamn magic ninja! And since she's not Colleen, I'm gonna guess either new character or Elektra.

Man, one of these days, I want someone to just f*cking stab Danny while he's taking a couple seconds out of the fight to harness his chi and power up the Iron Fist. He doesn't take that long to do it, but he actually closes his eyes. A lot can happen in a second or two, especially when one fighter's not looking at his opponent.

I like that he punches her back into the dark room, and then follows her in only to fail another spot check. Sorry, Danny; you are not qualified for ninja fighting. Especially if that weak-ass knockback was the best your superpower could do. The Iron Fist is having a rough day.

"The war you're fighting is not here. It's in New York City." And then he died. I mean, Danny can heal people through his chi, so he could have stayed here and saved this man's life while Colleen went after the ninja. Priorities, y'know? But we all know by this point that Colleen doesn't fight unless absolutely necessary and Danny doesn't give two shits about saving lives. Danny is Marvel's Kratos, chasing quasi-imagined vengeance regardless of the consequences to the people around him.

"Closing time! Go home!" Jessica! ^.^ It's great to see you again. I've missed you. Go punch Danny.

"The night's just getting started." "…night?" Who the f*ck closes their bar during daylight hours? The implication is that Jessica's been here overnight and now it's morning, but that's illegal. Bars are legally required to have a cutoff time known as Last Call. Once you cross that time, it is unlawful to sell alcohol. They don't necessarily have to close then, but if they're staying open past Last Call, that's on them. In New York, Last Call is at 4 A.M.; after that point, bars close for business.

If this guy's only now putting the chairs up and kicking Jessica out at, what, 10 AM? Noon? Point is, if he's only now closing his shop despite not having been able to sell a drop of liquor for hours, that's on him.

"We got a problem?" Uh, no, you don't get to cut to Jessica and Trish casually walking around with coffees after she just vandalized a police vehicle. Jessica's going back to jail.

"Is there whiskey in this?!" "Oh, yeah, that's mine." [lol] Never change, Jessica.

"My bad. These belong to you." Luke breaking the handcuffs in response to the key-drop trick is perfect.

"Mr. Lucas? Mr. Cage? Which do you prefer; I forget." Hey, it's Foggy. ^.^

"I'm not starting over, Mr. Nelson. I'm moving forward." Nice callback to Pop's mantra in Luke Cage. Little details like that are what these crossover events are built on.

"People call me Foggy." "…and you let them?" [lol]

"Made. Public. …what do you mean?" Nice catch, Matt. Man, it's good to see him in a courtroom again. His own show criminally underutilizes the lawyer side of the character.

"I'm already angry." "At who?" "Everyone." I love this conversation. It's a really nice heart-to-heart from one disabled person to another.

"Congratulations, Mr. Murdock." Oh, hey, it's Karen! I actually wasn’t expecting to see her until The Punisher comes out.

Aww, Danny is haunted by PTSD hallucinations from the realization of what became of K'un Lun in his absence. He blames himself for the heavenly city being wiped out. And he is absolutely right.

"It's just turbulence." Why is the symbol of Shou-Lao crossed out on Danny's chest? Was that from one of the ninja's swipes? Because it's fantastic symbolism if so.

"Are you going to talk to me about whatever's on your mind?" Pfft, why start now?

"What do they want in New York?" Well, they were digging a giant hole for no apparent reason, so your guess is as good as mine. Also something something Black Sky something something Go F*ck Yourself.

"You'll need to disrobe, jewelry and all." Is that seriously where Sigourney Weaver's entering the franchise? Between this and Avatar, she sure is doing a lot of nude scenes in her old age.

"I'm dying. My red blood cell count has dropped precipitously and almost every one of my major organs is close to collapse." Is she not with The Hand? I knew she was going to be appearing in this show but I had her pegged as, like, the big boss of The Hand. This doesn't seem like something The Hand would have a problem with.

"Did you call the cops?" "No." "Why not? They're free." Jessica's being an asshole in this scene as she does, but that's actually a great point. These are white people so it's not like there's a pressing fear that the cops are going to show up and shoot them for no reason. Unless the husband's black. Then his life might be in danger if they call the police.

I like that Jessica's apartment is still all trashed. She's poor. When shit gets broke, it stays broke for a long-ass time. Sometimes indefinitely. I get that. TV usually doesn't; there's an assumption about poor people that we can always budget to replace anything that gets damaged. Serious financial consequences are unheard of in television, because television is made by people for whom serious financial consequences are unheard of. People who cannot fathom the idea that if your window gets smashed, it stays smashed because there is no money to replace it.

"Jessica Jones, do yourself a favor and don't look for John Raymond." Well, that's ominous. It'd be funny if it was the mother trying to pique Jessica's interest with a clever trick.

"Well, I hope I was worth it." "You got potential." D'aww. Danny/Colleen and Matt/Karen take note: this is what chemistry looks like.

I mean the PG clothed sex is incredibly conspicuous, but the chemistry is strong.

"Call me selfish; I want to see you take care of yourself." Weren't you the one pushing him to become Harlem's Hero in the first place?

"Feels like a chapter in my life is closed." Matt stopped wearing the suit? Did we know that? I feel like we didn't know that.

It's just as well, really. That thing looked awful in live-action.

"You took a ca-ase! I can tell; you've got that glow about you." I've missed Malcolm. ^.^

I like how each character is being given a different lead that's presumably meant to tie them into the bigger plot. It's not, like, Stick showing up at everyone's place of resident and going, "Hey, everyone, it's time for the team-up." At least for this episode, it feels like a second season beginning for each show.

"You could do that. Or you could help guide this young man in a different direction." I mean, that kid sees Luke Cage walking up and asking to help, he's going to start pressuring Luke to find the killer anyway. There's a reason Superman isn't a grief counselor. Someone sees that kind of power sitting down and offering solace, and they expect it to be used.

"Purgatory is a place for the dead, Matthew, not the living." I love this entire confession scene. One of the things I like about the DareDevil show is how much emphasis they place on the character's Catholicism, and this instance is no exception. Watching Murdock give his confessions feels perfect for the character.

"You always liked this spot." Hey, it's Gao! So Weaver's character is with The Hand and thus should have absolutely no concerns about her impending demise.

"If we speed the process, it will not be quiet." "I'm aware." I want Gao to just be like, "Allow me to rephrase. There is a man in a robot suit who owns a skyscraper right here in this city. We are able to stay under his radar because we are sneaky like ninja and operate on the basic crime level. If we do this loud and open like terrorists attacking the city, there is a non-zero chance that we will all be abruptly shot in the face by an indestructible mobile tank."

"Finish feeding the birds, will you?" That is a nice subtle show of power. Gao questioned her decision, so now she's flexing her authority muscle to make Gao perform a menial task.

"You guys know where I can find Cole?" "What's it to you." I like how quickly Luke's acclimating to being famous.

"What happened to Shaun was…it's more like an accident." "You sure about that?" Luke, this is not consoling. This is pressing the kid for information.

I love the transition of Luke throwing his hood up to Jessica taking hers down. Very nicely cut.

"Dude, I don't care what weird shit you're into, but we've gotta talk." He's dead, isn't he? She's going to break into the apartment and find his corpse.

"Holy shit." I love how monotone that was. Even when Jessica's discovering a stockpile of C-4, there's still only so many f*cks she can bring herself to give.

"It's just a city. You'll get used to watching them fall." Oh, hey, the ninja from the beginning was Elektra!

Also, her masterstroke was a moderate earthquake? I assume there are more steps past this, because that's not much of a move.

So, this was certainly an interesting first episode. Danny's still a shit but it's great seeing Matt, Luke, and Jessica again. Both Luke and Jessica's plots are pretty interesting and I'm curious to see where they're going. Meanwhile, The Hand is still here trying to be Big Bad material with mixed results.

In all, though, there's more to like than dislike in this episode and I look forward to seeing what comes next.

Sewer levels suck. Speaking of which, here's Danny Rand.

I really liked the slow uptick on The Defenders, and despite his show having some mighty fine fight scenes, Matt's always at his best when he gets to talk. That the Hand don't ever freaking talk in Season 2 of Daredevil might actually be the worst thing about them. I know what I said. Because it's moments like this that salvage it. Even when he's bedraggled, staggering into court half-dead from fighting ninjas all through the night, Matt very nearly pulls off Frank's acquittal, were it not for Frank's own conviction (aha) that his crusade for vengeance must not be written off as a fool's errand, not by anybody. But just one confession booth scene with Father Lantom late in Season 2 could've done a lot to explain what exactly we were supposed to be getting out of the battle with the Hand, though. One humanizing moment. Vladimir and even Healey got that.

Couldn't disagree more about Luke and Claire having chemistry...Rosaria Dawson does her very best to sell it, but I still cringe every time they show their romance, partly because it doesn't really yell with Claire's overall attitude towards vigilantes and partly because Coulter is still a little bit stiff in his role.

Anyway, I think that the Defenders is in a lot of ways the weakest of the Netflix shows and the first episode already showed why. It is just overly complicated structured and full of narrative nonsense. For example, I don't really see why that sewer fight was needed in the first place, or why they introduced the new villain by showing her as vulnerable as possible, or why they introduce this weird story about Matt having stopped being Daredevil.

Luke and Claire have great chemistry. Luke also has great chemistry with Jessica. And also with Misty. Luke hitting on women is the one time when he's not stiff. Or... I mean... Well, you get it.

And it's not the vigilantism that Claire minds. Her problem with Matt is that he's a self-destructive Blood Knight. Luke, on the the other hand, rarely throws the first punch, and when he does (like at Crispus Attucks), he generally manages to do what he does with a minimum of lasting damage. Luke has certain advantages in that regard, but it's also about his personality: Luke wants to do the right thing the right way for the right reasons.

Matt's goals are sound, but his methods are anything but, and his motives are hardly pure. He enjoys the pain he causes, on whatever level, and he has that deep-seated need to punish himself both as a Catholic and his father's son. That's the difference. If he weren't so compromised, there was a brief time when Matt and Claire were almost a thing, in those first few episodes.

Well, I at least agree that the chemistry between Jessica and Luke is off the charts. But that one works because in the context of their relationship, Luke acting very guarded fits and it comes off as very natural. But when he is with Claire it feels more like he doesn't trust her and just goes through the motion to be what she expects him to be. It doesn't really feel natural and there is no true sizzle between them.

[up] No, I think that Coulters stand-offish approach to romance works with Jessica because in the context of the show it comes off as Luke being drawn to her against his will, which makes sense considering how toxic their past is. And that he still can't let go of her despite all that indicates a strong feeling. But with Claire it comes off like he decided to keep her as a convenient pet, since there is no reason for him to be that guarded towards a woman who has been nothing but supportive from day one.
