Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules
still apply.
- This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
- While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread
. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
- Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.
If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

"Oh no, a movie directed by African-Americans, starring African-Americans, and marketed to African-American audiences, has African-American made music in its trailer. Man, I’ve never seen such an ill fitting use of rap in a trailer. "
with is about african chararters in african places, so let go with african american since is the same? also that is the same excuse some said to use white only cast member in anime adaptation.
"Hmm, no uproar about any of that... "
.....Really? we are going to do this?, ughhh.

Yeah....is weird.....
Yeah, now it make sense.
Them speaking in English with local accents isn't that weird considering India is the same way, but it's true that it's a bit odd since India's is the result of British colonialism and Wakanda is not. On the other hand it's possible to Fan Wank it as T'Chaka having pushed for education reforms to include learning the lingua franca English as preparation for the country to breach its isolationism even before the events of Civil War.
The official poster reeks of bad Photoshop, but at least the background is pretty, and their placements are less obtuse than Spider-Man Homecoming's or Age of Ultron's.
Regarding the trailer, I agree that the music is a little jarring, but it's not a bad song so I'm not too bothered by it. I can't tell if they've fixed the value issues in monochrome but otherwise the cinematography and use of color looks gorgeous, if nothing else it will be a beautiful movie to look at.

To clarify, the general argument wasn’t that the trailers shouldn’t have rap music, but that the specific rap song used in this trailer wasn’t thematically appropriate.
However, I do agree that the defense of “there are black people in this movie, so of course they should throw a rap song in. That’s black music, right?” is rather patronizing. It’s like expecting Iron Man to be associated with country music.
Or to be more on the nose, I guess, assuming that just because Iron Man is associated with rock and metal music, that means any rock or metal song is equally fitting for the character.

You can say it's a stereotype to associate black people with rap music but it's a stereotype that exists for a reason. We invented it.
I'm not even gonna touch on this other than to say yikes.

" I'm black. I love Run the Jewels. Almost every black person I knew who saw the first trailer thought the track was fucking awesome. You can say it's a stereotype to associate black people with rap music but it's a stereotype that exists for a reason. We invented it."
Im latino and I love Diablo from Suicide squad even when he was a goddamn steriotype and because there a huge amount of asian people who do kung fu dosent mean is nto the steriotype.
And is not bad, just like other said it sound kinda out place.
"My Name is Bolt, Bolt Crank and I dont care if you believe or not"We invented jazz music too, but I'm not about to suggest Cab Calloway as the theme to Panther's next trailer. Leon Thomas, maybe.
But more to the point, the Mexicans Love Speedy Gonzales thing is only really applicable if the argument is that rap music as a whole is unacceptable, which - as I literally just pointed out - it isn't.
Although part of the reaction is also that they're associating an stereotypically African American style to African characters, and that could have easily been avoided by simply choosing an rapper with more African roots to their style (and perhaps sampling a song that doesn't literally condemn the thing they're advertising).

Indeed. Especially when I'm more offended by Thor: Ragnarok using a 70's American rock song and not an ancient viking sea chanty. Or Björk.

Ah, don't get me started on that. Thor's soundtracks have always been rather hit or miss, especially given the amount of potential in the source material.
Also, they've never released a Thor movie on a Thursday, and that's always disappointed me.

I was thinking that the trailer looks fine, but between it, Ragnarok and GOTG, Marvel has kind of doubled-down on movies featuring otherworldly characters and futuristic cities with flying vehicles.
