Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules
still apply.
- This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
- While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread
. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
- Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.
If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

It might be like South Africa, where English is one of the major languages.
"All you Fascists bound to lose."![]()
Wakanda is supposed to be isolationist and extremely proud of its own culture, why would English be a major language ? Everywhere that happens in real life it's because of colonialism and centuries of the English speaking world being the global haegemon

Wakanda also inexplicably speaks Xhosa, a language that's from a whole other part of Africa. It's possible Wakanda's history is more convoluted than it seems.
Or given how advanced it is, it's possible their education system teaches its students most major world languages simultaneously, thus the use of English.
"All you Fascists bound to lose."Gotta make some room for MBJ to chew the scenery.
And it looks like unfortunately Sif won't be in Ragnarok after all
. Which is strange since a talk show recently listed her as being in the movie and the actor implied they were gonna be it in the past. I wonder if it's a Deleted Role.

Honestly...I hate the trailer. Not because of the scenes and the visuals shown, they are great. But the music they picked is incredible distracting and doesn't really fit what is shown. Plus, why the hell do they feel the need to put this kind of music on everything in which the cast happens to be black? Why not adding something more African? It is not like there aren't African or at least Africa-inspired musicians.

Because a movie that's 3/4ths in subtitles isn't conducive to the interests of the average consumer.
Look, all you need to know is that if it's two Wakandans talking in Wakanda, they're speaking... Wakandese?
My various fanfics.Awesome though it was to hear Gil Scott Heron in a trailer, the use of “The Revolution Will Not Be Televised” was pretty funny - given that the entire point of that song is “don’t waste your time watching movies, tv shows or letting yourself be led by pop culture.”
On the whole it struck me as the marketers wanting to find something that sounded archetypically “black” than something that really fit. IIRC, the last trailer threw in a rap number that didn’t really fit either.
Odder still, if they wanted to use more thematic raps - even ones from African sources - there are tons to choose from.

- I guess I'm not the only one a little bothered by the choice of music.
- The white characters are minimized in the poster. :p That's rare to see.
- I'm not too enthused with the villain being an "evil counterpart/wearing an evil version of the Black Panther suit." But I also never read Black Panther so I don't really know who Evil Black Panther is, or who his villains are. A friend happened to mention to me that they were setting up Klaww in Age of Ultron for him to come back in Black Panther.
- Alright I know T'Challa with the Panther suit is like Cap, Bucky, and Iron Man combined, but seeing him leap out of a plane like that... I mean we saw him doing the same jumps/sprints as Steve, but even Steve winced after he had to jump out of that elevator. Panther just looks like he's about to kick someone's ass.
- T'Challa's final statement about whatever's going on in Wakanda will affect the rest of the world... does this movie take place after he takes Steve and Bucky in, or before?

I'M MR. MEESEEKS, LOOK AT ME!Honestly the debate about it being inappropriate to have rap music in the trailer is just reminding me of Mexicans Love Speedy Gonzales.
Like I appreciate people's potential concern I guess but it's a bit of a reach.

Better look at Killmonger's suit
◊. I guess it's supposed to be a jaguar?
Oh no, a movie directed by African-Americans, starring African-Americans, and marketed to African-American audiences, has African-American made music in its trailer. Man, I’ve never seen such an ill fitting use of rap in a trailer.
*watches Charlize Theron punch out bad guys to ‘Black Skinhead’ in the Atomic Blonde trailer*
Hmm, no uproar about any of that...

I didn't say that it is offensive, I said that it is out of place. I mean you have the beautiful shot with all the stars in the background and this gorgeous landscape and they put music over it I associate with an urban setting and run-down neighbourhoods. It is just grating and the only reason I can think of for this choice is "oh, there are black people in it". Which is too short sighted...it's like advertising a show set in Berlin and putting Bavarian Folkmusic on it because both is German.
Anyway, Killmonger being a leopard makes sense because a panther is a special kind of leopard. There is the potential for symbolism in this.

Man, those bumps on Kilmonger's body make my skin itch a little. Those kinds of body mods always get to me for some reason.
But this is a good trailer.
