Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

I'd prefer Pepper taking on the Iron mantle but if that's not an option then Riri's a good second.

Depends on if Paltrow would be up for it. Admittedly I don't see why we can't have both. Increase diversity and let Pepper do something a little different.

Jesus did Riri kill you guys' family members?

Nope. I like the concept of Riri Williams, super-smart kid who Stark takes notice of and goes, "hey, you did what I did in like half the time, be my heir." I'll buy that over a terminal patient suddenly being more worthy of being "Thor" than Thor himself.

I just know that replacing Tony Stark/Robert Downey Jr with Riri Williams will never work. RDJ is the face/mascot of the MCU.

If Riri Williams is used it'll be like X-23 in Logan, with Stark maybe dying/forking over the franchise and Riri taking up his mantle. But not having her own solo. I don't think she's even existed long enough to have any adventures worth adapting into film, unless they adapt one of Stark's stories and insert her into it.

Even if RDJ would retire, there are already so many people flying around in some sort of metal suit in the MCU, and we have already done (in terms of action) most of the stuff one can do with an Ironman suit. Going though fire, being underwater, busting the Hulk.

Also, I really don't see any reason to rush it. We just got a while new slate of heroes worth exploring for phase four. We can think about introducing new ones towards phase 5, and even then Riri wouldn't really be on the top of my list. That would be the moment to allow Statue, Miss Marvel, Nova, Amadeus Cho usw their moment to shine.

I'll just say that Riri is a very... polarizing character. Either you love her and think she's the best thing to happen to the Iron Man mythos, or you absolutely hate her with a passion. I fall on the latter group.

I also think she has no rep to adapt any of her (few) stories into film, outside of an origin film. Maybe if it was a Riri-America buddy film... maybe then I could be convinced to give her a chance.

Kamala Khan and America Chavez are definitely characters I am 100% on-board with seeing show up and have movies.

Also, Jennifer Walters is too awesome to have gone this long without an MCU appearance. Seriously, Marvel, get on that.

Then again, I also wanted Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur in an episode of Agents of SHIELD, so for me, it’s a case of “more the merrier.”

Give me more Guardians, a Kamala Khan Netflix show, and then Kamala cameos in MCU. She’d fit in perfectly with Spider-Man and Captain Marvel.

Kamala seems like one of those people whose story would best be told in a serialized fiction but would need a movie budget

Also she's the successor to a movie character and Marvel T.V and movies don't do crossovers.

"America Chavez"

Presumably NOT written like she is in her solo.

I would be so here for a Kamala Khan movie. I'm not super sure her powers could work on a TV series budget, even if her stories would probably work better serialized.

[up]Okay there's really no point saying that. All of these characters would work better serialised. They're all from comic books I.e serialised fiction.

The good thing is that the MCU kind of is a TV show for the big screen. Worked with Spider-man, too.

Kamala has several stories at this point. Surely one of them would make for good adaptation into a feature film. And while her stretchy powers are low-key enough that they could probably manage a little of it with a TV budget I'd rather see i get the movie treatment.

Iron Fist, Episode Twelve

Oh, hey, we're back to Ward!

And he's having crazy hallucinations about Harold eating his children! The trauma and/or drugs must be getting to him.

"I will pay you whatever you earn in a year if you will unstrap me and get me out of here tonight." "What kind of nurse would I be—" I appreciate this woman for not committing federal crimes just because a rich person asked her to.

"Hello, Ward." I'll be honest, I expected Bakuto here to be Harold.

"You've been poisoned by Madame Gao's synthetic heroin." Okay, so Ward's hallucinations and terrible symptoms are withdrawals from the drug and not just PTSD. So there is a drawback to her otherwise perfect drug after all. That's better.

"Think of this drug as a shortcut past your withdrawal symptoms." …except that it comes with an antidote. Okay. Unless Bakuto's lying here and the drug's, like, actually going to kill Ward or something. If this actually works as Bakuto advertises, then we're right back to Gao's magic heroin being totally awesome and having no drawbacks.

"All of this and freedom from your father forever. It sounds good, no." It does sound pretty good. Better than anything Danny's ever proposed in his entire life.

"Help me capture the Iron Fist and you and your sister will be safe." You know, you probably could have just led with that. They went to opening credits after this but I can just hear Ward being like, "Oh, you want to piss in both Danny's and my father's mouths? Shit, where do I sign up? I'll be your goddamn cheerleader."

I mean, I'm sure Bakuto's probably working an angle here but it's still a pretty great offer, all things considered. He wants to be in charge of Rand, he's offering to protect Ward and Joy, and he's got the last piece needed to make Gao's magic heroin into the best thing that ever happened to America's substance abuse problem. Danny just wants to punch whatever he's mad at today.

"Don't believe anything she says, Danny. She's Hand." …did you just f*ck off ominously at the end of the last episode so that you could dramatically show up at the start of this one? Is that seriously what you did? Davos got pissed off and left when he saw Danny and Colleen canoodling, and then I guess he just followed Danny and Colleen around the city at a leisurely pace until he decided it was the right moment to spontaneously drop in on them.

That's the only way this appearance makes sense. It's not like he has a GPS tracker on Danny. If he'd legitimately gone away to, like, clear his head or something, he'd have no way of figuring out what random street corner these two decided to flee to.

Also, I love how Colleen just escaped from The Hand and now they're fleeing from the magic ninjas at "Drunk Guy Stumbling Home" pace.

"She paid a steep price for it." "Or they faked a defection to get her on the inside. This is what they do." If only, Davos. I'd have a lot more respect for her character arc if that was true. And also for the magic ninjas, who are just so bad at being ninja.

But no. She's not a double agent or anything interesting like that. She's just an obnoxious one-dimensional love interest whose only purpose for existing as a character is to worship Danny's throbbing whiteness. I'm as disappointed as you are, Davos.

"We're going to take down Bakuto and we're going to do it with Colleen." Yeah, about that. Weren't you supposed to be dumbf*ckedly staking out the compound right now, waiting for him to come out, instead of intelligently staking out Harold's penthouse and waiting for him to arrive? Becuase you're not doing that. You're shambling aimlessly around the city like an idiot.

Bakuto could be murdering Harold and Joy right now. You wouldn't know, because you aren't doing your f*cking part of the plan.

In fact, he's at the hospital right now. He's not even in the compound. I was totally right when I said that watching the compound was a dumb plan. Danny's bad at strategizing and then can't even keep up his end of the shitty strategies he devises.

"What's the problem, Ward?" "No problem. I just want to spend some quality time with Joy." He's trying to get her out of the penthouse, isn't he? Bakuto's about to launch his counterstrike and Ward doesn't want her in the thick of it.

Ward is totally losing this argument, even though he's entirely right about Harold becoming desensitized to killing.

And there's the counterstrike. Going off without a hitch because Danny just can't do anything right.

"Harold is a monster." "No, you're the monster." Eh, you're both right. But Harold's the more interesting monster so I'm with him.

"Can Joy and I leave now?" "No. Come sit over here." You'll leave when you're dismissed. C'mon, Ward. You've been a minion of evil long enough to know how this works.

"You poor people are such a mess. I know a good family therapist should any of you survive the night." I don't doubt he does! He's probably got several on his payroll for the compound. A lot of kids need helping, after all.

"Everything Bakuto said to me was a lie." Hey. Hey, Danny. The Meachums are dying right now while you're having this intimate moment. I mean, I know how you are with personal responsibilities, but I thought you should know.

What. Danny smashed Davos's phone last episode because The Hand could be tracking them, but he's apparently had his phone in his pocket this entire time. So I guess you only had to go without a phone if your name isn't Danny Rand. He doesn't want to be tracked, but he's not about to break his phones. Phones are expensive, man.

Oh, hey, I've been waiting for this moment! Bakuto actually assembled all three of the men in Joy's life together so that they could all feel manpain when he shot her. It's the Fridging trifecta. I mean, it's a gutshot so she'll probably survive, but the sentiment is still there.

I love Harold's choice of last words. His speech to Ward and to Joy is a perfect summation of his entire character. He tells Ward to go f*ck off and die for his treachery and reassures Joy with his undying love and affection, which are fitting last words on the surface but also carry a subtle undercurrent of, in what he expects to be his final moments, permanently shattering the bond between the Meachum siblings. If this is to be his end, it's the perfect note to go out on.

"STOP!" You know, I half-expected Bakuto to just go, "Don't wanna!" and swing anyway. I mean, now that Danny's here in the obvious trap, it's not like he has any reason to keep Harold alive.

"Don't let them take him." Really. She's dying of a gutshot and her first concern is Danny's wellbeing? This is a rather excessive example of people bending over backwards to be concerned about the hero.

Really, Danny? You couldn't wait until you were at least out of the building before breaking through those handcuffs? Ward and Harold are going to need to come through this foyer with Joy in order to get her to a hospital. If they have to delay medical attention because of violence whipping around this room, her death's going to be on you.

"I kinda got this feeling you're not allowed to kill me." Why? They're The Hand. They can just bring your ass back to life after Bakuto delivers your corpse.

Hey, look, Bakuto led them into huge, dark room with lots of open space. I bet there's ninjas waiting to ambush them.

No? No ninjas? He just taunts Colleen into accepting a duel like an idiot? Okay.

That thrusting pose she's taking with Bakuto on the ground is not how you decapitate a person.

"If we kill him, we're no better than them." Really. So we're right back to having absolutely no plan for how to actually achieve Danny's blind-rage goal of bringing down Bakuto's faction, then? Colleen's satisfied her ego and now we're just going to walk away and let him get back to doing what he was doing?

"So what? We call the police?" "We have enough on him." Like f*cking what? At no point were you ever planning to have him arrested. You have not gathered even an iota of evidence.

Uh, Davos, that's not how decapitation works either. Bakuto's going to come back. That's how this works. You guys know this. Especially you, Colleen. You all should know how this works.

"The rules are different here! There are consequences!" Danny, you were just saying that sparing Bakuto was unacceptable. God, you're contrarian.

And now Danny and Davos are fighting because Danny's pissy about Davos doing the thing that Danny was just telling Colleen they needed to do and I honestly could not give a single f*ck about who is going to win this fight. They're both just raging assholes and there's no actual stakes because neither of them has anything to gain by winning. They're just dick-waving.

This is a dick-wagging contest. This is precisely what a dick-wagging contest is about. Danny and Davos are fighting over dominance, which is pretty much what Danny's been doing with everyone since he got here.

"I HURT YOU. I GET IT. IT WAS SELFISH AND WRONG OF ME TO LEAVE WITHOUT TELLING YOU." Because men are only allowed to have emotions if they're VIOLENT emotions! Punching people is how REAL MEN work out their deepest, darkest feelings! MY DICK IS SO HUGE IT HAS EMOTIONS OF ITS OWN RAAAAAARGH

"I wish you could understand." And I wish I could give a single solitary shit about what you're feeling right now, but unfortunately I'm drowning in all the testosterone. Has Bakuto revived yet? He's fun.

"Holy shit…." Oh good, Bakuto revived and left. You're all dumbasses. All three of you.

"He was stabbed in the heart; there's no way he's alive." Are you sure you're with The Hand?

"GET OUT NOW." Why would Ward suddenly care about helping Danny? He literally agreed to sell him out to The Hand in this very episode.

Also, I love how Danny's response to the warning is to stay right where he is and text Ward back. Danny can't do anything right.

So that was…that was a thing, alright. In the wake of all that, I just have to ask….

What ever happened to that cancer factory? The one that there were all those people concerned that there might be chemicals causing cancer but nothing was ever proven to be carcinogenic? That subplot just sorta dropped off the face of the universe. Was that supposed to be the one that the Triads shot up at Danny's behest?

Anything shown before Episode 6 might as well not have happened for all the difference it makes to the rest of the season. Also the Hand need Danny to open the gate on the Dragon Cave in Defenders, though I'm not sure how much of that had been decided when Iron Fist was made.

Colleen actually probably doesn't know how the Hand's resurrection works, even if Danny and Davos still should. Bakuto seems to have deliberately kept her out of the loop about the Hand's dark side so that she'd make a better recruiter for them. She's not a good ninja, she just genuinely didn't know anything. Which means her constantly pushing Danny away still makes no sense if she was under orders to get closer to him.

I’ve been guessing the quagmire with Universal is what’s keeping that from happening. Otherwise even with Perlmutter I couldn’t see them not jumping on that years ago.

I am guessing the lack of a proper Hulk sequel is to blame. Had they kept making Hulk movies after TIH I guarantee She-Hulk would've been introduced by now. Otherwise I don't think there've been any movies so far where it would have made sense to introduce her.
