Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules
still apply.
- This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
- While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread
. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
- Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.
If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Here's apparently the moment where he thought he turned it off
.
Oh dear, that sounds so like something that could have happened to Tom Holland.
I hope he doesn't get into too much trouble for that.

Kevin Feige teases where Captain Marvel has been since the 90's
Obviously he might be misdirecting but he hinted that she has bedn out in space. Which is hardly unexpected given the villians of her solo film, and still leaves a lot to be answered.
Iron Fist, Episode Eleven
"It's not what I thought." "It's not what any of us thought. But you have a duty now, and we'll face it together." Kiss him, you fool!
No, but seriously, I'm sure the Netflix shows don't actually have the budget to show us the dragon fight, but that's a shame because I would really like to see the dragon fight. How Danny punched a dragon to death is one of the biggest mysteries of the Netflix canon right now.
Also, why is it that Danny was able to activate the Iron Fist on reflex when Davos woke him, revealing that he had it, but ever since then, he's had to meditate super-hard in order to make it flare up?
"There's no sign of whoever was following us. I think we're clear." Well, the people who might be following you are ninjas, so…no.
"How is Lei-Kung?" Oh, Davos is Lei-Kung's kid. Neat.
"You were right about the internet. It's very useful."
Davos found him because of his dumbshit behavior at Rand. That's great.
"They killed my parents, Davos!" Jesus, are you still on about that? Even Batman doesn't drag his dead parents into everything this much. It was a motivating factor that set him on his path but, like, he has other stuff he cares about too.
That this is still Danny's only motivation despite the numerous responsibilities he now holds is really obnoxious.
"You knew what your duties would be and you don't get to decide what that means." Thank you, Davos. You're still That Asshole, but you're totally right on this one.
"I wasn't chosen, you were. And you took it and ran." … "And for what? What do you have to show for abandoning us?" I am so happy that Davos is here.
"I have the truth about my parents." You are literally the only person in the universe who cares. The only person. You've abandoned two separate sets of personal responsibilities to others in order to pursue a personal grudge, and now you have it, and you're going to continue abandoning those responsibilities. That's the problem with Danny as protagonist; he is a champion of selfishness, recklessly pursuing an agenda that only actually matters to Danny Rand, while causing nothing but harm in his wake.
In any other show, we'd call that the Bad Guy.
"Once we do this, we go back." I'd love it if you were right. I really would. I would love if the last episode of this was Danny resigning his duties at Rand, publicly apologizing to everyone whose lives he f*cked up, and then going back to K'un Lun forever. But he's in Defenders so probably not.
"That woman who helped you escape the compound, who is she?" "No one important." In two lines of dialogue, Danny summarizes the problem with his relationship with Colleen.
…really, Colleen? You went back to the dojo? Like that's not the first place The Hand will look for you?
"Colleen, where did you go?" Jesus, Bakuto himself was ninja'ing the dojo. I'd like everyone to take a moment to imagine Bakuto spending seven hours in Colleen's closet playing games on his phone. It's not as funny as when it was Diamondback, mind, but that's because Bakuto is a trained ninja and has probably logged many hours on Candy Crush by now. He's used to this shit.
"He's been programmed to kill us." "That's not who he is." You're shitting me right now? Colleen is seriously trying to assert that Danny doesn't have a violent grudge against The Hand?
"When he found out that I was deceiving him, that I was keeping the truth from him, what did you think was going to happen?!" You are a bad person, Bakuto, for not putting my role as Danny's Sexy Lamp above the cause that we have dedicated our entire adult lives and much of our childhoods to believing in and serving!
"We gave them a purpose. A family." I mean, they also gave them a fanatical cause to believe in and fight for, but Bakuto's right. The Hand is enriching people's lives and Danny's trying to tear that down because a rogue splinter faction murdered his parents. Bakuto's work isn't entirely selfless but Danny's is the pinnacle of selfishness.
When you get right down to it, how is what Bakuto is doing here any different from Christian missionary work? "Here is food, here is a shelter, here is water to drink and games to play, and here is your Bible."
So apparently, sometime during the last episode, Claire went, "The Hand is going to be gunning for my head given all this Gao nonsense and both Danny and Claire are not here to help defend me if magic ninjas burst in to murder my face. I guess I should go home and read a book."
"There's something in there." Oh hey, it's the tip of that thing Bakuto stabbed him with. He broke it off in order to keep the wound from healing. That was clever. Bakuto knows his shit, man.
"She knows about the Iron Fist?" Should she not? You've never said it's some deep secret.
She's stapling his wound closed? I legitimately do not know enough about medicine to know if this is sound practice or not.
"Can you check the perimeter?" "I've already checked. Twice." Danny could not be more obviously hinting that he wants Davos to leave the room if he tried.
I love how Claire is sitting here like, "Maybe the thing with Colleen is more complicated than just Good Guys and Bad Guys," and Danny's like, "SHE WORKS FOR THE HAND THAT MAKES HER IRREDEEMABLY EVIL FOREVER ARGLEBLARGHLE ETERNAL HATE!!!" Because love means never giving your partner even the slightest benefit of the doubt; the instant she does something you don't like, you drop that bitch like a sack of moldy potatoes.
"The way you two feel about each other? That's real." Eh. I'd say it's adrenaline at best. Real love involves, like, respect and shit.
"This is it. This is the silver bullet I've been looking for." Hey, Joy got to do something! Let's see if it gets any kind of results.
"Dragons aren't real." "Why would you think that?" It's an excellent question. In a world where reiki, aliens, the Norse gods, and superpowers are real, why not dragons?
"Danny's trying to do good. Maybe he'll make the world a better place." What? No, he's not. He's abandoning everyone who depends on him in order to avenge his parents' death against people who weren't even connected to it.
"Then did you think about trying a different name for the group? Like The Ear or The Arm." Claire never stops being awesome.
"Because your sensei stabbed me." "He says you attacked him first." "That's not what happened!" It is, actually. That is literally what happened. Danny broke into his monitoring station, started breaking his computers, and after a short conversation, Danny grabbed a keyboard and flung it at Bakuto's face. Danny was 100% the aggressor in the compound battle.
"Okay, then what did happen?" "He's not a good guy, Colleen!" That's not actually an answer to her question. Danny basically just said, "Yes, I am absolutely guilty of what he accuses, but in my defense, I had reasons!"
"I am the Iron Fist. Protector of K'un Lun. Sworn enemy of The Hand." But only when I can use it to justify telling people to f*ck off.
"I only want one thing and that's to see The Hand destroyed." Let's talk about that, because you've already made it clear that you have no intention of killing anybody. You've been rocking the non-lethal hero thing like Murdock does, but with even less reason and more reckless disregard for the consequences of your actions. Since killing Bakuto, burning his organization to the ground, and salting the earth with the corpses of his followers isn't an option on the table, what, exactly, is your definition of "destroyed" here?
"Can I borrow your car?" Absolutely not. You have already stated an intention to go marching into a war zone blindly. Do you know what it's going to do to my insurance premium if my car gets totalled by some asshole who isn't even on the policy?
"Can we talk somewhere private?" "Yeah." Sure, let's step three feet away into a corner. Corners insulate sound, right?
"I can't really go to the compound right now. That's why I came to you." "I could get in trouble." Jesus, is every hospital employee in Marvel's New York just totally okay with stealing medical supplies?
They try to play it off like she's programmed by The Hand to do this and we should be concerned by how easily Colleen was able to pull this string, but Danny pulled this same stunt a few episodes earlier and he was looking for even more dangerous shit than just some antibiotics. So no, I don't buy it.
"You two stake out the compound. Once we close out the accounts, he'll come out into the open. That's when you can strike." I like this plan. Harold's put some thought into this. Except for the part where we're totally counting on ninjas to visibly enter the building rather than pull that Stealth Hi/Bye crap that they love to do to Harold.
"You're talking about murder." "We cut off the head and the snake will die." Maybe in 14th century China, but we're talking about one sect of a larger organization. Best case scenario, someone else replaces Bakuto and The Hand returns to business as usual. Worst case scenario, they get absorbed into one of the other sects. I mean, that's literally what happened to Gao's control over Harold; she was removed from power and Bakuto took over.
That said, at least you're on-board with killing Bakuto now. Gives your talk of destruction at least some measure of bite.
Ooo, doctor lady called The Hand to report that Colleen was going rogue rather than commit a federal crime at her behest. Man, I love Bakuto's sect.
"You vouch for him?" Oh, hey, it's the security officer guys. About time they showed up again.
"Bakuto, what the hell is this?!" This is you being detained for betraying the organization. What the hell did you think was going to happen?
"Bakuto, I believe in The Hand!" You have a hell of a way of showing it.
"At least we can take some comfort in knowing that in your final moments, you'll still be giving to The Hand." There we go. Finally, something legitimately sinister from the people who are supposed to be the villains here.
Whee! Colleen finally gets a decent fight scene!
"But then you ran. Like a thief in the night." "That's not what happened." Danny's going to have to do a lot of explaining to sound even halfway convincing, because that's been pretty clearly what happened since he arrived in New York. He's been pretty adamant about not returning to K'un Lun.
"That's when I knew the way to K'un Lun was open. I could leave." …so you ran away like a thief in the night, then. No part of Danny's story actually changes that basic fact. He is once again playing the card of, "Everything you accuse me of is 100% factually accurate, but it's totally justified because of things that only matter to me, personally." Danny has zero understanding of the concept that the universe does not revolve around him.
"Wait. We have to wait for Bakuto!" …wait, they were staking out the compound? Seriously? They thought they'd just stroll up and gank Bakuto as soon as he stepped out the gate? You idiots realize that he might not even be here, right? Bakuto could have been, like, chilling at the hospital or out getting Wendy's when he got the message saying his bank account's been f*cked with and took off to go deal with Harold.
I mean, hell, there's no promise he'll even get it tonight. I tend not to check my bank account for days at a time.
But even if he was here, ambushing him at the compound defeats the entire point of the ambush. The purpose of the ambush was to nail him at a time when all the people at the compound aren't available to come to his aid.
"I know what it's like to spend your whole life believing in something and have it pulled away." Bullshit, you do. You left of your own accord because you're an asshole who doesn't care about anything that isn't Danny Rand. You know jack shit about believing in things.
And there's Davos with the jilted lover glare. I mean, I know he's supposed to be all butt-hurt because Colleen's an agent of The Hand, but that was hardcore jilted lover face. Sorry, Davos, but Danny likes his Sexy Lamps to be life support systems for a vagina.
So, this episode was fun and annoying at the same time. Basically any time someone other than Danny was speaking, it was awesome. Whenever Danny opened his mouth and started vomiting self-righteous justifications rooted in his own selfishness all over the place, it sucked. Danny continues to have a significant motivation problem while only really believing in any given thing when it's convenient for winning an argument.
We're finally seeing the blood-drawing shit from DD2 crop up, so that's nice. I still gotta say I prefer Bakuto to Danny. Bakuto has a handful of objectionable practices in what's otherwise a pretty fantastic public service, whereas Danny is a 100% objectionable character. Their conflict runs afoul of the issue inherent in defining heroes by their objection to things. Bakuto wants to do a bunch of things. Some of them are bad things. But all Danny wants to do is take down Bakuto, ending both his good practices along with the bad. Danny has no alternatives in mind, and is also a garbage person, so it's hard to even say that he's morally better than Bakuto.
I'd like it if this particular point of interest ends in, like, Colleen taking over the compound or something and continuing to do their work without the objectionable parts. That'd be a good nuanced way to resolve the matter. But I'm not sure this show particularly cares about nuance.

Forever liveblogging the AvengersHonestly I liked the concept of Bakuto's faction, but Bakuto himself...I dunno what it is but I just cannot stand his actor. He's not bad, mind. He puts up a good fight so he has the martial arts down. I guess it's just how he's trying to play this whole smug snake type and he just sounds kinda weird while doing it, I dunno.
The entire concept of his faction is the only time the Hand have ever been done well in the Netflixverse, though. They felt more like a modern day cult here, something not as tied into the Yellow Peril shtick as in Daredevil Season 2. I kinda got weird Scientology vibes out of it.
Have you any dreams you'd like to sell?
I mean, he doesn't, though. It certainly colours his motivation of absolutely everything he ever does, but he almost never talks about it with anyone other than maybe Alfred.
It was always weird how this show seemed to understand Danny's issues but never actually does anything with it. It seems like it would almost have to be intentional that Danny learns so little, but it's not like it's even played for satire or irony, it's just there, man.
But we're talking about eleven episodes into the season, here, and it just hasn't really made any kind of point about said aimlessness. Danny doesn't know what he wants out of life, and that's relatable, but he doesn't seem to know how little he knows, or remember it even after being told repeatedly throughout the season, and that's just tiresome at this point.
Bakuto is into this for power. Danny at the end of the day means well. He is just unable to really grasp the full consequences of his actions. And his emotional grown is obviously stunted because the monks never allowed him to actually deal with the grief of loosing his parents. That's why he is all about it now, what we are seeing are ten years of pent up emotions breaking through. It is not pretty but Danny is not meant to be a perfect character, he is supposed to be a deeply flawed character who will grow with each of his failures.
And naturally Colleen goes back to the Dojo. She doesn't really see the Hand as danger for herself (yet). As the scene clearly showed she helped Danny to escape because she felt that she had made up for lying to him and that it would be better to mend the relationship between him and Bakuto by NOT imprisoning Danny in the compound, not because she suddenly realized that the Hand is bad because Danny said so. Which is, btw, addressing one complain you had about the last episode. Colleen's action make totally sense and I think her starting questioning the Hand, eventually seeing the truth and breaking free is a great little arc for her, which firmly puts her out of the sexy lamp territory.
A verified source has recently spoken with Kevin Feige regarding when we'll be able to see the trailer for Infinity War.
Specifically, it'll be before the end of the year.
I really don't get the impression that Danny means well. At all. None of his motivations are something that I would consider to be "meaning well". He only got back into Rand because he wanted to spit in Ward and Joy's faces for rejecting him as a friend, and then he immediately proceeded to blow off the company.
He straight-up left K'un Lun because being the Iron Fist is boring.
He started his war against The Hand because of drugs, sure, but he immediately stopped caring about that as soon as he found out that his parents were murdered. He's never spoken of it since. Gao's operation is probably still manufacturing and shipping drugs without her, but Danny no longer gives even a single f*ck about it.
He outright played the DareDevil card of, "Sure, lots of people are being shot to death in this battle I set off, but I'm not pulling the trigger, so my hands are still clean! Loophole!"
Literally the only reason he even has a problem with Bakuto is because the latter belongs to the same organization of which a rogue faction killed his parents. Bakuto is bad because Gao is bad even though Bakuto agrees that Gao is bad. Danny likes his blood vengeance to be indiscriminate.
Where's the part where he means well?
