Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

Sort of? Tony gets a few funny panic reactions but the Hulk never really had the upper hand in the combat, and we actually see the damage he deals to Veronica getting undone by replacement parts mid-fight.

My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub.

[up][up]No. I don't think she's in it. Some of those images are just reused from past movies, and Wasp is explicitly said to not be in it (she'll be in the sequel though).

Here's the full display. Gotta love poor Thanos just being off to the side.

Veronica won the war of attrition, which I’d bet will come into play if it goes up against Thanos or one of his goons.

Like, the turning point in a battle that Tony is winning would be Thanos or minion blowing up the floating Veronica platform, leaving the armor without a safety net.

Where did people get the idea that Natasha is on the run following the events of Civil War? While she seemed to be changing her mind about supporting the Accords, she'd only be on the run if she decided to explicitely turn vigilante, which we never saw her do. I assumed she took Ross's suggestion and is in a 10-Minute Retirement.

Tony said that Ross was coming to arrest her because she attacked Panther and allowed Cap and Bucky to escape. The issue wasn't that she wanted to still be a superhero without supporting the Accords, but that she purposefully sabotaged an authorized mission meant to bring Cap, Sam and Bucky in.

I like that Widow's new outfit seems to be a jacket. Keeps the leather bodysuit look while being a little more practical.

Ragnarok reactions are coming in and so far most of the praise I've seen have been about Tessa and Goldblum's performances.

So apparently everyone agrees that it is the best Thor movie so far...one reviewer said "great but not awesome" and apparently it is very funny. Also some praise for the visuals.

Wow, they must be really confident if they're already screening it this early. Sounds like another Marvel movie for good or ill. Given how relatively mediocre the previous two films, I'm not sure if "as good as the rest" will be enough to give the Thor franchise a shot in the arm.

I'm continually amused by "fans" who suddenly give a shit about the integrity of minor characters when a non-white actor gets cast to play them. It's Blink all over again.

[up] In the MCU, most comic characters can become popular, and they give a shit this time because of the social situation.

At this rate, a black person or a woman might even get to headline their own movie in the MCU, gasp.

Fun fact: Blink's official place of birth in the comics is the Bahamas, so there's a pretty high chance she's non-European, or at least wouldn't count as white by Aryan Nation standards. Like over a 95% chance, going by the Wikipedia numbers as of 2016.

Another thing I noticed in the reviews is a lot of them are praising the musical score. Given the conversation about the MCU films generally having very generic, unobtrusive songs, this makes me very happy.

Did you know the composer used to be in Devo?

If Marvel hires Hiroyuki Sawano for one of their films one day, then I'm sure the soundtrack will become more memorable. wink

I actually like quite a lot of the scores, including the one of Thor 2 (one of the better points of the movie).

Mark Motherbaugh's apparently a very busy composer. Video games, TV, movies, documentaries, a lot of animation. The Royal Tenenbaums, The Life Aquatic, Rugrats, Jak & Daxter, Peewee's Playhouse, The Lego Movie...

Dude, Mark Mothersbaugh is one of the biggest composers right now. Anyone ever grew up with Rugrats and remembered the weird little themes there, sounded like some weird keyboard/xylophone hybrid? That's him. So was the music on Regular Show.

His entire composing career probably eclipses everything he made with Devo.

Holy shit, Rugrats was him?!

I like Hiroyuki Sawano but he's running on creative fumes right now, just taking the OST of Gundam Unicorn would probably sound better at this point. Even his Xenoblade X OST, while earlier in his meteoric rise, suffered from sameiness and an excess of terrible mpi vocals.

"Knowing AOS, something huge and ambitious with far reaching consequences that the rest of the MCU will almost certainly completely ignore. "

I still find funny how thing are if you compare AOS with Civil war.

"Ok, so there is Non-Mutant all over the world, Hydra is reveal to be ancient alien cult and we fight someone with actual magical powers and flaming skull"

"Meh, who care, Cap and Tony need to punch each other in the dick".

"My Name is Bolt, Bolt Crank and I dont care if you believe or not"
