Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

But is the comic still happening? Because that's what I was most concerned with.

Apparently, the comic's been cancelled too.

That is unusual about Marvel being so gung-ho about announcing a partnership with a defense contractor, especially since they saw how bad the timing was with The Punisher. Now the company is more about aerospace engineering like Boeing than a Private Military Contractor like Blackwater, but the comic itself was clearly promoting them as developing tech to create superheroes fighting next to the Avengers. It's hard to imagine that being a good idea in any way, one reason fiction uses fictional companies and brands is so they can depict shady deals and corrupt officials without offending anyone. The Product Placement there is so dominate it hurts. Now if it was simply using their logo on existing tech like quinjets, that would be less controversial.

Some sort of huge photoshoot of the MCU actors is underway.

The Kree will be featured in Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Season 5.

...weren't they already in the show? 2 of them attacked Hive/Squid-Ward.

And I feel like the only reason to include the Kree would be to go back to an Inhuman storyline. But that storyline's already run it's course, and now with an Inhuman show, and no Kree-Sh'iar conflict or X-Men involved, what are the Kree going to be doing this season?

Given the way Season 4, I'd be very surprised if some sort of aliens didn't show up in Season 5. And as the Kree are a race that's been present in Agents of SHIELD in some capacity since season 1, and the MCU establishes they have an active civilization in modern times, they are an easy alien race to use for that purpose.

Marvel continues scraping the bottom of the barrel for characters to give the show, I see.

Nearly every other time they've done that, they've made it work. There have been one or two meh characters, but they turned the Patriot, a two-bit possibly-evil Captain America replacement, into a good character with an excellent arc. They also managed to make Nuke an interesting fight despite the comics having struggled with that for years.

Knowing AOS, something huge and ambitious with far reaching consequences that the rest of the MCU will almost certainly completely ignore.

As long as it makes for entertaining Agents of Shield, who cares?

Only speculations so far...remember, when the pilot was teased there were a whole bunch of speculations who Mike might be and they were all wrong.

Though it is naturally not unusual for Ao S to pick really obscure characters and make them work. It is half of the fun of the show.

She's in disguise, obviously. tongue

Note- I mean I believe she actually is supposed to be in disguise post-Civil War, but I"m amused that Steve's disguise is just growing a beard, whereas Natasha's is an Alias-style wig and outfit.

Wait, what is Hawkeye wearing? It looks like a robe and it reminds me of Loki's robe.

I'm more concerned about the Hulkbuster armor in the background...

[up]Maybe's that's Tony's attempt to disguise himself as The Hulk?

Some of those images are just recycled from older movies. That Hawkeye one is his weird trenchoat thing he had in Age of Ultron.

[up][up]Hulkbuster was confirmed a while back.

Veronica was in fine enough condition after her use in Age of Ultron. I'd be surprised if Tony didn't break her out for something like this.

This suit has beaten the Hulk, making it the most formidable thing the Avengers have right now. This makes it the perfect candidate for the big, tough guy that Thanos curbstomps to show off how awesome he is.
