Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules
still apply.
- This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
- While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread
. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
- Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.
If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Sure, if they want her to, there are plenty. But there are also plenty of excuses not to.
You have more faith in this franchise's treatment of its female characters than I do.

More like I have more faith in this franchise's commitment to brand synergy than you do. They keep talking of this being a culmination of everything that's happened in the MCU movies thus far. Every other film series they've ever launched (Iron Man, Hulk, Thor, Captain America, Avengers, The Guardians of the Galaxy, Doctor Strange, Ant-Man and Black Panther) will be involved. With everything else in the mix it's really unlikely Captain Marvel is gonna be the franchise where they decide "Know what? That doesn't need to be in this."

Yup. Or any number of explanations. She's been captured by the Skrulls and held in stasis while they experimented on her. She got lost in a wormhole and got out to find 20 years have passed. She taps into her full power and flies so fast that time moves differently for her and what seems like a few minutes is actually two decades. She just has a really good plastic surgeon. It could be anything.

I don't think I ever once even considered the possibility that Captain Marvel won't be in the fourth Avengers movie. It's just something I kind of assumed.
This song needs more love.I'd like a Young Avengers buildup - or something similar: it doesn't have to specifically be the Young Avengers. But something with Spidey, Stature, Kamala if she gets introduced, Amadeus Cho if he gets introduced, Kid Loki if that happens, etc.
In part because growing up / coming of age in a world of superheroes is a really interesting idea, in part because it's a great way to make a thing out of the franchise's longevity, and in any part because I'd just love to see those characters together.

Tobias, I don't get your argument at all. You've adopted a very cynical position with no evidence to actually support it.
Or are you just playing devil's advocate here, arguing a position you don't actually believe? I'm a little confused here.
Oh God! Natural light! This might seem dumb, but I need an answer. Everyone seems pretty sure the Black Panther is going to be an Avenger. How? T'challa isn't just the Black Panther, he's the king of Wakanda (and the duty of the BP is to protect Wakanda and its interests, iirc). Unless the big plot of the Black Panther movie is T'challa either being forced out of power or abdicating the throne of his own free will, how is he going to have time for the Avengers? The only reason Thor got away with that is because the king of Asgard still lived and ruled, so he wasn't really needed at home.
The same way he's been able to be on teams in the comics literally since the 60's? He doesn't run the entire country by himself, nor does he spend all his time with the Avengers.

The Avengers are not supposed to be a continual team, but are assembled when the need arrives. Hence Avengers Assemble. As king T'Challa wouldn't have time to be doing Batman-style ambushing threats out in the jungle either, but that's an established role that he has.
In his time on the Avengers in the 70s he mostly just neglects Wakanda to have comic book adventures and teach high school.
His subjects send increasingly desperate faxes begging him to come back and actually rule, which he ignores.
Forever liveblogging the AvengersWhat gets me about this poster is how awkward most of the characters look.
Thor looks bored as shit, like he's thinking, "So, are we done here?"
Jeff Goldblum's Grandmaster, as noted, looks smarmy as hell. Like he's giggling to himself about some private joke. "Wee hee hee, I left a poop in Chris Hemsworth's dressing room when he wasn't looking and it's going to start smelling pretty ripe soon!"
Valkyrie's staring blankly at the camera like she's saying, "Remember to warn me before you snap the photo so I can get into—GODDAMMIT, you were supposed to say something!"
Loki doesn't look menacing, he looks like he's in the middle of pantomiming someone trying to look menacing. "Whoo, look at me, I'm a scary, scary man, I am. That's Thor. That's my brother, right there."
Heimdall's slouching body posture says he's exhausted and can barely be arsed to keep his sword up anymore while his facial expression says, "Wait, what the f*ck is Loki doing in this movie?"
Odin has somehow managed to pull off a Thousand Yard Stare with only one eye. "I have seen some shit, my son. Literally. You do not want to know what Jeff Goldblum did in your dressing room."
Meanwhile, the Hulk is the only one among them actually managing to rock a menacing look. But he doesn't seem to have gotten the memo that he's supposed to be on Thor's side in this movie, judging by the way he's about to punch Heimdall in the back of his skull.
My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub.Marvel really needs to stop taking individual pictures and then photoshopping them together to try and make a group shot.
Like. At the very least, some sense that the characters are looking at the same thing would help.

My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub. It's a cheap photoshop, yet it's actually still a better job than most of the shops Marvel has done in house. GOTG 2's international poster had the same thing going for it.
Marvel's got other posters and promo materials that are better, but this is...serviceable. It looks like a brightly-coloured fantasy movie with an amazing cast, which is what it is. I'm not exactly excited about the poster, but this is a decent reminder of eight good reasons to see this movie, which is all it really has to be, at this point.
@Tobias: To be fair, if you took all of those characters and had them stand still for a picture, that's probably how they would act.
This song needs more love.

Well, yes. Because her movie comes out after it but before the next one and they've said they want her origin to be done in her own movie before she appears elsewhere. Which was the exact reason they gave for the Wasp not being in Civil War as originally planned, and lo and behold she's gonna be in Avengers 4 as well.
There are literally dozens of ways to have her show up in future Avengers movies without her having to have aged much, if at all, so I doubt that.
