Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

It's a pity the movies only ever use green hulk, there's grey hulk who happens to be angry AND smart

And there's red hulk and all the other incarnations too

Star-Lord and Thor are supposed to play off each other in the movie, according to the directors.

[up][up][up] I somehow doubt that Natasha would be into it....she would hate to be with someone who can read her that easily. Perhaps we should ship Mantis with Nebula instead?

[up][up]It means there was probably a lot of "Chris!" "Yes?" confusion on set.

Star Lord and Thor interacting makes me wonder how well known Asgard is in the part of the galaxy the Guardians run around in.

Hmm...by the sound of it, the early half is gonna be slow and of mixed reception but it at least sounds like it has some good stuff in there, sounds way better than Iron Fist too. Kind of feeling a bit scared of it not being as good as everyone was hyped for it to be.

Hemsprattevansworth sounds like his Power Level would be very high, for real. And if there isn't some in-universe Steve/Stephen, Quill/Parker confusion, I'll be pretty disappointed.

Often when I've been on set and other actors have shared names everyone will be referred to by their character names.

We have two Peters though.

Mostly I'm looking forward to Star Lord catching up on Earth history. I might have to fan fic this.

One's an assassin who has committed numerous crimes against his will, and must eternally live with that guilt.

The other broke his damned spine recently, and has to put up with Tony Stark.

What do you think?

Rhodey's life isn't that bad, there's a few non James superheroes in the MCU who'd I'd rank as having a worse life.

The Misery of the MCU films super heroes ranked worst to least.

Bucky > Nebula > Bruce Banner > Scarlet Witch > Rocket > Gamora > Scott Lang > Drax > Mantis > Black Widow > War Machine > Doctor Strange > Iron Man > Black Panther > Thor > Hawkeye etc

Rhodey doesn't even make the top ten.

[up][up]Where does Cap fit into this? I could see him ranking pretty high.

I would have argued that Tony should place higher but he does seem to have made up with Pepper so. His life is less teetering on the edge of a nervous breakdown these days.
