Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

So real talk, nobody here was expecting the Skrulls to show up in the MCU in any capacity, did they?

So basically:

Marvel: Hey, Fox, look at us! We're using the Skrulls and everybody loves it!

Fox: Hey, we can use the Skrulls too! We're just...strategizing how we can use them in our new F4 movie.

Marvel: Yeah, sure. You keep strategizing on how you can use them for that new F4 movie that you're totally not going to procrastinate on until the last conceiveable minute. Meanwhile, we're going to use the Skrulls in the here and now and basking in the awesomeness of catching our fans unawares. evil grin

Fox: Oh, screw you!

Real talk (again), given Captain Marvel is apparently taking place in the 90's and the Skrulls are famous for their shapeshifting skills, you guys think the movie will make reference to They Live!?

The talk about them being shared between Marvel and Fox made me think they'd show up somewhere down the line, like maybe Phase 4, not this early.

Killmonger having a golden panther suit sounds pretty damn cool.

What we knew beforehand was that the Skrulls had shared rights with Fox and Marvel, I think? Like, they can use the Skrulls but not some specific things like Super-Skrull or something. But we didn't, like, expect them to be in a movie or anything.

Of course this makes me wonder if they're gonna try doing Secret Invasion or some shit, I dunno. Doubt they'll do it so soon after Infinity War.

I thought the rules with the Skrulls were that Marvel Studios owned the species as a whole, but Fox owns Super Skrull in particular (which, when you think about it, is really dumb: how were Fox supposed to work Super Skrull into a movie without the Skrulls themselves?).

Is there anything stopping Fox from having the Skrulls show up as villains in an X-Men movie with no mention of the Fantastic Four?

[up][up] Maybe the fact that Fox is made up of brainless drones who can't think outside the box is what's stopping them from doing that?

That, and the X-Men never really fought the Skrulls, did they? No, their space bad guys are the Shi'ar, right?

I suppose.

That's not how it works. Both companies can use the Skrulls, there are just restrictions. Marvel (obviously) isn't allowed to use the Super-Skrull and certain other named ones. Fox can use Skrulls in general.

It is not unlike how both studios can use Quicksilver but Marvel isn't allowed to call him a Mutant or say who his dad is.

We know Hulk fights Fenrir, so I'd be surprised if Jormungandr didn't make some kind of last-minute appearance.

Fury knowing Captain Marvel back in the 90's adds a whole new context to this exchange.

Yeah, but if the Skrulls were to show up in Deadpool 2 and have everything they did in Infinity War be thoroughly mocked . . .
