Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

So any news on who'll be the antagonist of Ant-Man and The Wasp?

Have you any dreams you'd like to sell?

[up][up]Egghead. Ghost. Crossfire. I don't know.

[up]That shot where Hela puts on her helmet, the way it just grows into place might be favourite. Cate Blanchett's really sinking her teeth into that villain part. And casual narration Thor is still great. Bet Darryl shows up in the stinger.

So they're officially making MCU Banner into Comics Banner, what with Hulk being his own separate identity and such (before now, while Banner preferred to disassociate with him, MCU Hulk was unique among versions of the character in explicitly still being Bruce - just Bruce high out of his mind). That's... hrm.

I hope Skurge turns out okay. The MCU has a habit of adapting interesting, morally ambiguous characters as two dimensional brutes and dragons who smack the heroes a little and then die when the hero gets dangerous. The previous Thor film, especially.

Also, I wonder if they're compositing Hela and Death. If they are, that could make the plot of this one very interesting.

I haven't seen Michelle Pfeiffer in anything good since 2007, so I'm excited. Also, I really like that cast an actress in her 60s.

Caught the Thor trailer.

Funny thing. Reign of Fire is on (or was, it might have ended) while I'm writing this.

I always thought the Flying Axe-Man would work, so I was surprised when Matthew McConaughey's character just got eaten...and I might be the only one who was.

I feel like Hulk is gonna be a bit more successful with his version. Call it a hunch.

Edit: Apparently, that was actually Thor jumping at Surtur, aka old flame face. My bad.

That Thor 3 trailer is something else. I think it will actually be good, and not something I find a guilty pleasure like the other weak MCU films.

Bruce not remembering doesn't necessarily preclude the 'high out of his mind' interpretation. Blacking out is a thing. It doesn't make the person you are in that state not you. And like substance abuse, the more you do it, oftentimes, the closer those two sides come to being one and the same.

@shatterstar I'll redirect your attention back to this.

Michelle Pfeiffer is an excellent pick for Janet (and amusing too on the back of Michael Keaton). And Laurence Fishburne as Bill Foster is great news too. As is Skrulls finally appearing in the MCU for Captain Marvel (which makes me wonder about the possibilities of Phase 4 involving Secret Invasion elements).

Everything about that Thor Ragnarok trailer is great. 80s Music! Hela wearing her helmet! Hamming it up like crazy! Valkyrie having a different, cooler costume! Fenrir! Hulk speak! Guns for everyone! Hype all over.

So we've got a younger Fury in Captain Marvel. I wonder if this means we'll get a Peggy Carter cameo.

Regarding the Captain Marvel news, my guess is that she's been in space between the events of her movie in the 90's and the Infinity War movies. My guess is that she gets stranded on the Skrull homeworld during the events of her movie (but in the process ends the Skrull invasion), and is either put into stasis or simply doesn't age due to the whole gaining superpowers thing. This could be a simple matter of being physically on the Skrull mothership as it makes it's retreat.

We know at least part of the Infinity War movie takes place out in space, so perhaps an element of that part of the story is getting Carol Danvers back to Earth. Perhaps Nick Fury knows she ended up there but, before the events of Infinity War, had no means to actually getting there. Or perhaps Gamora and Nebula know that Thanos is legitimately worried about something on the Skrull homeworld, so the Guardians of the Galaxy direct the Avengers there when they are in need of a weapon to defeat Thanos.

Another look at the Skrulls.

Don't know what TV Tropes' policy on uploading footage is, but some camrips of the Infinity War trailer are up. They look SICK.

Michelle Pfeiffer as Janet is excellent casting.

@Known Unknown: Except MCU Hulk wasn't unique at all, he was just Mindless Hulk, which is the least interesting Hulk.

So i'm happy Hulk finally speaks.

Also, Hela is the comics as well, so that in itself doesn't mean they're combining her with Death herself.

Her power set prevents her from aging in the comics. She's actually in her fifties now, but, uh, does not look it.

I would live for Peggy to be in the film. I don't want the cast to be full of men and space-aholes.

I'm still half expecting Monica Rambeau and Moonstone to debut in this film, getting their powers in the same origin beam as Carol.

[up]×2

The other two are unlikely, or at least Moonstone is.

Moonstone gets her powers from the Moonstone, hence her name. So i don't see how getting her power from the same source as Carol would make sense.

Monica could work with that, but i highly doubt they'll use her.

I wouldn't be surprised if Hela does turn out to be a Composite Character with death. Especially since Marvel just made Thanos X Hela a thing in the comics, and we know how they love to mirror movie developments.

She's the Goddess of Death. In actual Norse mythology she's Loki's daughter. I'm really interested to see if that connection plays into Ragnarok, like if it's reversed and she's Loki's mother, or something, and it wouldn't really surprise me if she is the MCU's version of Death re: Thanos as well. Like if there's some kind of ouroboros plot at work with the Infinity Stones, and Hela is Death, or becomes Death, or Death Becomes Her, or who knows, even. All I know is that the MCU has found a lot of ways to play with the comics lore leading up to now, and they keep on managing to surprise me, so I'm psyched.
