Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

That poster doesn't look too bad at first glance. Is it drawn or a photo? Hard to tell with that lighting.

If that's not just an artistic flourish the purple-glowing vibranium would be an interesting visual cue.

[up][up]It's hand-drawn. It, the Thor and Infinity War posters were all concept posters.

I think the focus testing probably says audience respond better to actual pictures of the actors (shopped as they may be), but movie studios always have extremely technically skilled artists working for them, so getting them to do posters or whatever that capture the likeness of the actors would be pretty simple and probably result in better posters the majority of the time.

There's a Drew Struzan feel to all these posters that I really like compared to the usual. Probably because the artists already have some idea of composition to start from whereas the official photoshopped posters just crib a bunch of preexisting images together no matter how unfitting.

...Does this mean Stan Lee will cameo in-person in The Defenders, or just be a poster again? tongue

Either way that was a good monologue.

I kinda wish they'd saved Tony's "This is the end of the path I started us on" line from AOU for Infinity War. It seems like it'd be more fitting and impactful there.

I suspect that he'll be busy swearing and sweating because this is literally everything he feared and overreacted to.

So is Tony just so smart he can see the future? Or was the Mind Stone trying to warn them about this from day one? They don't really have to explain that, sometimes a vision in a sci-fi/fantasy is just a vision (even if it's coming from the proto-Vision), but I do wonder if there might be some kind of payoff for that, just how much they've actually planned as buildup for Infinity War.

His ptsd and anxiety regarding space came from Avengers, where a giant invasion from space happened and where he nearly died because of it.

Everyone else was basically 'yay we won' while Tony has fixated on 'shit what if they come back?'

Which is a valid thing to worry about really.

Oh, I don't disagree with that. But I'm just curious how much of what he's seen is just him being smart enough to put the pieces together and how much (if any) is the Mind Stone feeding him information of its own.

[up][up]Looks a bit better. Costumes and makeup are still pretty bad, but at least some of the sets look a little less parking lot (though Attilan still fairly parkade-ish) and maybe the script is okay. Lockjaw's a big cute dog but Medusa still looks terrible. But maybe post-production really will help this show.

This can't be helping them with people who don't already know something about the Inhumans, though. It's unnecessarily vague about stuff, like you have to infer that Attilan is on the moon or that the king is that big guy who doesn't talk, and that Maximus is afraid of him talking. They could afford to just say some of this stuff outright. Exposit a little.

[up][up][up] So it looks like the Inhumans series is going to completely ignore Agents of Shield that just great. (sarcasm)

[up][up]I wondered myself if the Mind Stone weren't trying to push him in the right direction a bit. Someone did mention that while the visions Wanda showed Black Widow and Cap (and whatever she showed Hulk) were clearly just meant to traumatize or incapacitate them, Tony and Thor's visions seemed rather prophetic about what was gonna happen in future movies (aliens attacking Earth again and Ragnarok occurring, respectively).

Just saw they showed off the Hot Toys figures for Thor Ragnarok at SDCC, and Loki's comes with something interesting. The Tesseract/Space Stone and the Casket of Ancient Winters from the first movie.

Hot Toys' stuff is aimed at adult collectors and pretty much never makes up random stuff that isn't in the movies, so I'm guessing these factor in to the plot somehow. Interesting.

[up]Like Thor he appears to have more than one look in the movie. He's wearing a green costume in the trailer on what looks like Asgard, but a blue one on Sakaar.
