Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

[up][up] [up]Last season of Agents of shield...they had this character bend on revenge who kind of lost his head and then insisted that he was designed to kill. They haven't really confirmed him to be MODOK, but since he is still floating around somewhere, along with some other plot points (like a mysterious inhuman on the ground of the ocean and freaking Graviton!!!!), they might make it official next season.

Ugh.

[up][up]He was on a really great show called Justified. Ironically Chadwick Boseman was in an episode too before he was famous.

Basically it was a reference to MODOK but he's so far not actually MODOK and I doubt he'll become MODOK.

[up][up] Not "Ugh" at all...how they made it believable was kind of clever.

Plus, the fourth season of Ao S is AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Had forgotten about him for a long while, but maybe Whirlwind? He's like the only well known Ant-Man villain besides Hank Pym Yellowjacket.

I mean assuming he's playing a villain in the first place.

Like I said, at best it's just a reference to the comic MODOK but it's not actually MODOK. It's a dude with a bunch of LMD's of himself, that's literally it. I mean, he is one of the better parts of Season 4 after a while so on his own I guess he's alright, but there's no hints or anything to him being the MODOK.

[up]

Darren Cross's brother was a villain too, wasn't he? Crossfire or something.

Disclaimer: I was actually joking when I said it's clearly MODOK. Though in hindsight, he wouldn't be a bad villain for a Ant-Man film. Particularly with the comedic tone of the first. MODOK plays best when writers are self-aware he's utterly absurd but then proceed to point out being absurd doesn't make him any less lethal.

If I had to guess, he's playing Crossfire/William Cross, cousin to first film's villain Daren Cross, who's been undergoing a Rogues' Gallery Transplant to Ant-Man's rogues gallery (which is basically non-existent) during the last decade. I've heard some rumors he's playing Whirlwind but I think that character belongs to Fox.

Just a thing here, the four season of Ao S is the one with Hive or the one with Ghost rider?

[up][up]

Why would Whirlwind belong to Fox?

[up]

Ghost Rider but he's only there for the first story arc. The rest is LMD stuff that is really fucking good.

[up][up]Oh right, for some reason I kept thinking the second part of the season(when hive posses ward) is season 4 for some reason.

Now this Madam hydra and the virtual world is another season? as you see and really left behind with the show.

Whirlwind's a mutant but he also has nothing to do with the X-Men, so I don't think he's over there. Much like Molly in the Runaways.

Okay, so Season 4 has three story arcs the writers called "Pods", kinda like little mini-seasons each that all lead into each other: Pod 1 is Ghost Rider, Pod 2 is LMD's, and Pod 3 is Agents of Hydra.

Fox doesn't have providence over any character who's a mutant regardless of what mythos they're actually a part of just because they're mutants, so that's not a problem.

I want Whirlwind to show up, but I don't want him to be Big Bad - I don't think the character works best in that niche. Make him The Heavy and/or the villains Big Guy, and set him up as a personal enemy for Hope.

Or really, I'd love it if they just went the whole way and adapted him as Jan's enemy, being some old adversary of Hank and Jan who actually survived, was incarcerated, did his time, and now reminisces with Hank every Thursday about the old days / gives the villains inside information about fighting Ant-Man. Especially if there's some sort of 60's flashback arc/adventure in this one, though that's probably pushing it.

[up]Case in point, I'm pretty sure Quake was originally a mutant (or at least was strongly implied to be one).

Hence the comics push to have a lot of mutants suddenly be Inhumans for a while there.

Mutants were specifically created so that not every superpowered person needed to be the victim of some incredible onetime experiment, lab explosion, mystic blessing, malign curse or whatever. It was designed as a go-to explanation for superpowers for anyone who might not otherwise have an excuse. Then M-Day happened and mutants could no longer act as a convenient excuse, plus the X-Men went and got themselves exiled to a separate corner of continuity via their movies. Now everything's all out of joint.

In fairness, a lot of people were made mutants initially because mutants were popular.

Cloak and Dagger were mutants once. As was Squirrel Girl.

And can you imagine that the Ghost Rider pod is actually the weakest of the three?

I get that fans are protective of the actual Mutants, but I really don't see much of a difference if you use "it's a mutant" or "it's an Inhuman!" as explanation for random abilities. Both reasons are the hell better than another scientific experiment or random accident and in a way, "Inhuman" is even better than Mutant because the rules how and when Inhumans get their powers are more random.

Inhumans have a pretty strict way that their powers activate

Racism against Inhumans makes the slightest amount more sense too, I'd say. Since they are legitimately living weapons created by aliens.
