Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

I feel like some variation of this has to come with every movie. Remember when people thought Mads Mikkelsen's character in Doctor Strange would totally turn out to be Victor Von Doom?

End of the day, Fox doesn't want to give back the Four and Marvel doesn't really want them back either. I still remember years ago when Kevin Feige told people, "Don't be rooting for Fantastic Four to fail in the hopes that the rights will revert to Marvel and we'll start making a ton of movies with them. Why would we want to make movies out of a franchise audiences have proven that nobody likes?"

Paraphrased because it was a long time ago, but the point is, Marvel getting back the rights because the F4 make garbage movies that nobody likes would not lead to Marvel making movies with them. Maybe they'd show up in Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. or something, but they'd be kept far away from the cinematic MCU if the reason for their return is "Their films suck and everyone hates them."

Now, I don't know about you, but I don't think their last F4 film is a very effective argument for why they're a totally successful brand and Marvel should cut deals to make films with them.

Honestly, everything which is said about this issue is part of a long negotiation, so I take it with a grain of salt.

Speaking of negotiations and taking things with a grain of salt, has Sony actually started shooting on any of the movies which are announced? And which ones of the Fox projects actually look like they will be happen? Just because they secured multiple dates it doesn't mean that they will actually use them for the announced movies.

[up] Looking good, if blurry.

Man, what I'd give for an Infinity War trailer right now...and not a behind the scenes featurette. I mean an actual trailer.

But we're probably not seeing that until we're closer to Thor: Ragnarok's release date, are we?

[up][up][up]It's overall consistent with their track record, though. We got reboots of Daredevil, Punisher, Elektra, and Ghost Rider, just as far away from the actual movies as possible. Spider-Man was the sole exception because of two factors: He's one of the most popular and marketable fictional characters in history and even though his last movie was a financial disappointment, that was mostly relative to its insane budget and marketing costs. It still did 700 million plus, indicating there's still an audience that justifies trying another Spidey reboot.

Like I said previously, the best case scenario I could see for getting the FF rights back is having Doom show up as the villain in the next Avengers movie, or Galactus and the Skrulls.

Good to know Civil War wasn't the end of the character as some people feared.

Description of the teaser for Infinity War. Sounds epic.

The Guardians hit Thor with the Milano. Loki brings the Tesseract to Thanos. Steve has a beard now. Hulkbuster shows up. Spider-Man has his new suit from the end of Homecoming. Big fight between the Avengers and Thanos. Black Panther and Bucky with the army of Wakanda. Thanos beating the shit out of Iron Man.

I don't really understand Feige's argument. Just because the F4 movies do poorly doesn't mean no one likes them- it means Fox doesn't know how to make an F4 movie. I think people her have said before that Marvel would do a much better job at making an F4 movie then Fox ever did

We big fans on the internet understand the rights matter, but the movie also has to appeal to Joe and Jane Moviegoer, which is different. They're just going to see it as yet another bad movie in a franchise.

I know people who roll their eyes about Spider-Man: Homecoming because they aren't aware of the rights issue and see it as just yet another reboot of a tired franchise. FF would have it even worse due to their less-than-stellar quality.

That's not what he's saying. What he's saying is the brand is so tarnished that there's gonna be a bad association with it among general audiences.

That'd be a nice nod if Tobey Maguire took it that way. And if this rumour is more than a gossip blog fishing for clicks.

@ Karkat the Dalek

Probably not for many months unless someone was able to sneak a phone in. It look quite a long time between D23 previews of Civil War and the first actual trailer.

We could see a trailer during comic-con. It also looks like Hickman has a strong influence on the movie.
