Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

    Original post
Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

Most of the examples you are talking about are slowed down for the audience
"What we saw on-screen didn't actually happen" is a pretty absurd argument to make.

It's like saying Hawkeye is hypersonic. And was so was everyone else in that movie. He was just slowed down for the audience.

I mean this was a completely absurd argument from the get-go. "I slowed down the film to analyze how fast he goes" is a rather silly point of contention.

Ah, thought it was another debate about whether or not Ant-Man would've been better or worse with Edgar Wright as director.

In regards to this argument...I mean, if a film uses slow motion, we're not supposed to think that it's really going that slowly, right?

My only concern about the movie was that it felt like a Robin-esque "sidekick grows into his own" story with all the emphasis on Stark creating most of what makes Peter Spidey (even the "friendly neighborhood Spider-Man" line), but I was always confident that Marvel would handle it well, so I'm not surprised at all!

Why can't it be July 7th, already? Doesn't Spidey have some sort of time travelling nemesis that could speed things up?

It's a little bit too early to pin down the RT score....quite a few critics will post closer to the release date or after the movie is in theatres.

But I am tempted to watch the movie in theatres this time around.

"What we saw on-screen didn't actually happen" is a pretty absurd argument to make.
It isn't when it's pretty clear what's on screen is slowed down. You know, like when directors use slow motion. Or do you think everyone is actually moving in slow motion in those scenes?

It's like saying Hawkeye is hypersonic. And was so was everyone else in that movie. He was just slowed down for the audience.
Hawkeye isn't a speedster. Quicksilver is.

I didn't. A lot of people did that before me.

I'm not talking about the slow-motion scenes. Most of his running scenes aren't in slow motion, and everyone else is moving at normal speed around him (for instance, the scene where he steals Klaue's gun). He's just not that fast.

[up][up][up][up][up]It's too early to really say. As more reviews go in it'll probably go down a few more percentage points.

He seems pretty fast to me. Certainly faster than, say, an out of control train.

In any case:

Nope. The script just says something like "Quicksilver punches this guy", it's the SFX team that decides how fast he should go because they're in charge of making the film look good. They wisely decided that anything beyond 100 mph just doesn't look good in any scene except aerial shots of him running through the city (you see the same thing on the Flash TV show).

How do you know this? Do you have a source?

He looks faster because he's a man, not a train. If you actually check how fast he's going, it rarely exceeds highway speeds. This is demonstrative of my earlier point about how people often underestimate how fast even a human moving at highway speeds would appear to be. I blame over-saturation and power creep.
How do you know this? Do you have a source?
Read any of the publicly available scripts for various superhero movies. They don't get very specific about action scenes at all, and oftentimes what little details that they do get specific about are nixed in the final project.

Also, I don't know if this is how the MCU movies do it (though I'm willing to bet it is), but in the DCEU films the special features of their Blu-Rays have mini documentaries of the SFX team going over how they created each fight scene, as well as the efforts they went through to set and depict Superman's speed.

[up][up]Gotta say that looks better than I had remembered, and Qucksilve was likewise more effective than I had remembered. I had recalled him as being pretty close to having none of the Required Secondary Powers, including being unable to stop, but from the video, I see that he was shown as being capable of Flash-like feats and could do a bunch of things while "speeding", just limited by his ability to think ahead.

Okay, thoughts. Keeping in mind the only thing I know about the Inhumans is what I've read in this thread: Medusa looks like crap. Idk what she's 'supposed' to look like, but without anything to use a reference, she looks like she's wearing a cheesy costume and wig she rented for cheap at the last possible minute. Also, I don't like Lockjaw's teleport effect. It doesn't look like he's teleporting so much as moving at extremely high speed.

Pietro's as fast as the story requires to do what it wants to do, which is slower than the Flash or Xsilver, and as slow as the audience needs for them to understand what's happening. Strong as They Need to Be, Rule of Perception, Speed of Plot, etc.

[up]It looks like Lockjaw and company are being sucked offscreen in a cheap '90s morphing effect. Because that's what's happening. There's probably a way that could've been done that would've looked cool, but I have my doubts that they'll change that before the show releases.
