Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

SM 2 has a lot going for it staging-wise, with some great action set-pieces, an underrated naturalistic performance from Tobey Maguire (and I don't even like Tobey Maguire), and a villain performance that's head and shoulders above most of what the MCU has had to offer. There are plenty of recent superhero movies which are more polished in general but not as ambitious or creative overall.

I'd put it behind, say, Winter Soldier or Civil War, the first Iron Man (...maybe), both Guardians movies, possibly a few others, but it's up there. And I like Ryan Reynolds' performance as much as anyone, but I think that elevates what is a pretty formulaic movie otherwise.

I thought the point of Deadpool was that it had the structure of a generic superhero movie, except with Deadpool Deadpooling all over the place. The opening credits even lampshade it; the generic-ness of the plot was pretty intentional.

Didn't say it wasn't, and to be clear I really liked Deadpool, but I do still think it would have been a better movie if Copycat and Ajax had been given more to do, and if there'd been anything to match the inventiveness of the bridge fight at the beginning in the back half of the movie.

Apparently the studio cut a bunch of money they were supposed to use in the last fight. The finished movie is what it is but that's the reason why.

Most of the problems with that movie can be chalked up to that one sentence fragment, actually. "The studio cut a bunch of money"

Felt that way, and they did what they could. Points for trying but you can see where the budget ran out.

Got brain damage unicorns are doing what they can to help, at least.

[up]

A source says Holland is only contractually obligated to Spider-Man 2 and 3, but the intention is to bring him into the spinoffs and possibly other Marvel films (he is currently shooting Marvel's Avengers: Infinity War).

Via the Hollywood Reporter.

They're very much planning to have Spidey involved in these to some degree.

Interestingly, they say Sony has access to another MCU character who, will appear in Homecoming 2, but it sounds like Iron Man won't be back.

I get that a lot of them are part of the Wakandan Royal Family Cast Herd or probably being introduced to set up for future movies, but man, is the cast for this movie getting pretty big? Not going to sweat it at this point though.

The idea is rather than just launch right into Sinister Six (which has been shelved), the studio wants to build to the movie gradually. On the one hand, that’s a smart bet. Audiences aren’t chomping at the bit for a supervillain crossover movie (especially after Suicide Squad received less than positive responses despite adequate box office), so you may as well take your time and get people to invest in the individual characters rather than just six random supervillains. On the other hand, Sony seems to be building a house of cards on how much Spider-Man they can sell without Spider-Man.

THR says that Sony wants to bring Tom Holland into other spinoffs, but at some point your schedule just becomes too packed, especially if you’re a supporting character to bolster some villain. It’s possible that the best way forward to creating a connected universe among the villains may not be Spider-Man, but a character who crosses over between Spider-Man: Homecoming and the rest of the Spidey-verse—a Claire Temple or Agent Coulson, if you will.

Why not just make them MCU films? Just make Spidey movies their own sub-division of the MCU? It will probably give them a lot more money in the long run.

Perhaps but I'm sure 10-20 years from now, some people will be saying the same thing of the super hero movies we like right now.

I'm sure they will. Because we'll have even better ones then.

And there will still be people going, "Pfft. I don't know what y'all are on about. The last great superhero movie was the first Avengers. I know we now have holographic super-films that will do your taxes for you while you watch them, but nothing's ever held a candle to Avengers 1."

[up][up][up]Because Disney/Feige are wise enough to know that letting Sony churn out shitty movies and label them as part of the MCU will hurt the brand.

Also, it's the old EU problem: if Sony is making their own movies with their own plots and continuity, and we're nominally calling them MCU movies, then unless they either want to keep meticulously accurate to the twists of a series that isn't theirs, then there's going to be continuity issues that the audience will pick up on.

We already have that problem with the tv shows (as the films routinely ignore them, forcing the shows to wheedle and creatively interpret things to keep up), but the main reason it's not a major problem is the difference in medium.

I actually think that's gonna be less of an issue here since I can't see the MCU's happenings too heavily affecting Sony's universe unless like, Thanos nukes New York.
