Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules
still apply.
- This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
- While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread
. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
- Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.
If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

In Deadpool.
"I like Ryan Reynolds' performance [in Deadpool] as much as anyone, but I think that elevates what is a pretty formulaic movie otherwise."

Forever liveblogging the AvengersApparently the studio cut a bunch of money they were supposed to use in the last fight. The finished movie is what it is but that's the reason why.
Forever liveblogging the AvengersDoes this go here?I''ll move it if not but this sounds interesting.

They're very much planning to have Spidey involved in these to some degree.
Interestingly, they say Sony has access to another MCU character who, will appear in Homecoming 2, but it sounds like Iron Man won't be back.

I get that a lot of them are part of the Wakandan Royal Family Cast Herd or probably being introduced to set up for future movies, but man, is the cast for this movie getting pretty big? Not going to sweat it at this point though.

I'm sure they will. Because we'll have even better ones then.
And there will still be people going, "Pfft. I don't know what y'all are on about. The last great superhero movie was the first Avengers. I know we now have holographic super-films that will do your taxes for you while you watch them, but nothing's ever held a candle to Avengers 1."
My Tumblr. Currently side-by-side liveblogging Digimon Adventure, sub vs dub. Also, it's the old EU problem: if Sony is making their own movies with their own plots and continuity, and we're nominally calling them MCU movies, then unless they either want to keep meticulously accurate to the twists of a series that isn't theirs, then there's going to be continuity issues that the audience will pick up on.
We already have that problem with the tv shows (as the films routinely ignore them, forcing the shows to wheedle and creatively interpret things to keep up), but the main reason it's not a major problem is the difference in medium.

SM 2 has a lot going for it staging-wise, with some great action set-pieces, an underrated naturalistic performance from Tobey Maguire (and I don't even like Tobey Maguire), and a villain performance that's head and shoulders above most of what the MCU has had to offer. There are plenty of recent superhero movies which are more polished in general but not as ambitious or creative overall.
I'd put it behind, say, Winter Soldier or Civil War, the first Iron Man (...maybe), both Guardians movies, possibly a few others, but it's up there. And I like Ryan Reynolds' performance as much as anyone, but I think that elevates what is a pretty formulaic movie otherwise.
