Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

(Continuing from Wonder Woman thread) A point was raised about the National Guard and the NYPD not being shown fighting the Chitauri onscreen. It's pretty brief, but we actually do see the Army rolling up and firing at the Chitauri fliers. I don't have a clip of it, but I do have this clip of them filming that scene.

Also there was going to be a subplot about one of the cops Cap spoke to fighting back with a Chitauri gun, but it was cut for time.

So some people got ahold of the junior novelization for Spider-Man Homecoming, and in it are spoilers for Zendaya's character's identity.

Looks like most of the furor was for nothing, and the people in this thread who deduced her identity from Toomes' line in the trailer were right. Unsurprising since IIRC the person who posted that "leak" was Umberto Gonzalez who's been known to make things up like Iron Man being in the GOTG stinger.

Huh. Wouldn't surprise me if they were setting her up as a future villain/rival to Peter. Although that may seem to a lot like a rehash of the first Spider-Man film plot. Interesting, nonetheless.

[up]Funny enough that was one of the aborted plot lines for Spider-Man 4. Anne Hathaway would've played the Vulture's vengeful daughter who tries to kill Spider-Man after blaming him for her dad's death.

Seriously? Wow. Maybe Sony dusted off that specific script, showed it to the Marvel boys, and they said "We can do something with this". I mean, it's plausible now that we know that Zendaya's character is the Vulture's daughter. Unless her last name is a Red Herring

[up][up]So they were just going to recycle Harry's arc? Bravo, Sony.

If we're going to be optimistic, more like rehabilitate it into something that works, like Civil War did.

To reiterate there's literally no indication that's why Marvel and Sony are planning to do, I just found it an interesting coincidence.

The report about Michelle's last name is wrong. The junior novelization actually never gives her last name.

By the way, I want to see this crossover.

That's the first thing I thought of, and it'd be an interesting idea.

With any other character it would be a bit cliched, but it's business as usual Spidey. His history is full of kids and relatives of villains who, despite not always starting off as bad people, tragically don their parent's villainous personas because they're consumed with vengeance - all the way back to the Big Man and Crime Master's kids starting a gang war in one persona while falling in love in the other. All part of his "couldn't save them" theme, in this case not saving them from themselves.

Plus it would allow the MCU/Sinister Six/etc to use "Vulture" even should the film kill him off at the end, and give us a villain who is Peter's age and among Peter's friends, which the last few series kind of botched imo. As a guy who's always loved the inherent tragedy in kid/teen villains, I'd like to see that.

The MCU also hasn't had a antagonists that have really been present or influential in some way in multiple films outside of Loki and more recently Ross (not counting Thanos because hes's the Bigger Bad whose influence is at a distance), and it's something imo the universe should do more of. Especially with guys like Vulture, who are very easily made into "recurring minor antagonists with superpowers."

It's suspected that James Gunn may want to retcon Rocket having met Lylla before the first GOTG. At the very least, he wants to retcon something that was on the characters' rap sheets when they were arrested.
