Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

I wonder what Stan Lee's cameo is going to be like.

No.

I vote that Stan Lee doesn't get a cameo but TNC does.

I mean, it'd be unfair for Stan not to appear because he did create Black Panther. You could have Stan Lee as a newsreporter talking about Wakanda this time, or maybe the narrator of some old documentary about Nakanda someone shows.

If anything I'd give Christopher Priest a cameo.

[up]Stan and Christopher as old historians in a documentary.

Maybe the movie ends with T'Challa opening Wakanda up to the outside world, and Stan Lee is one of the first tourists to get off the bus, asking if they have postcards.

I very much doubt anything but death can stop Stan Lee from cameoing at this point.

And even that's not a guarantee.

It will only lead to a Netflix cameo...meaning some picture or something like that stuck in the background. Plus, aren't the cameos for the next movies already done? They did a bunch with him to prepare in advance as far as I remember.

James Gunn said he filmed four Stan Lee cameos in the same day. Two have been confirmed as Doctor Strange (Stan laughing while reading The Doors of Perception) and Guardians of the Galaxy vol 2 (Stan relaying his stories to three Watchers). The upcoming films are Spider-Man: Homecoming, Thor: Ragnarok, and Black Panther, so I'm guessing the next cameos are for the first two films and he may not have done the BP cameo yet.

You're all overthinking it. Just have a little old Jewish guy living among the Wakandans and don't even bother to explain it.

Huh Johns wrote Black Panther once?

He used to write the Avengers and Black Panther was one of the main characters in the run. He ended up doing probably one of the most memorable BP scenes ever.

They might have Stan Lee as a guest at the Korean banquet they seem to be attending. Maybe he'll be in awe at the badassery of the Dora Milaje.

Stan Lee's Black Panther cameo will be as the owner of the only pizzeria in Wakanda[1]

Stan Lee's been in Wakanda prison almost his entire life so he can't tell the outside world about Wakanda.

We see a shot of Bucky, still in cryosleep. In the next pod over, labeled only as "True Believer," we find Stan Lee.

The only Marvel-related movie Stan didn't cameo in is the Fant4stic, I believe. Jeez. That movie is so bad.

I think he's only cameo'd in X1, X3, and Apocalypse on the X-Men side, and I don't think he had any lines. It seems like Sam Raimi and the MCU were the ones who realized they could have some fun with it.

[up][up]Which is hilarious because he never had anything to do with Deadpool or any of the other characters in the movie, but it was still fitting given the nature of the film. After all, he is The Cameo Guy.

Stan Lee is basically the public face of Marvel, and it's most recognizable creator to the general public by far. So I don't think that Marvel cares if he technically had anything to do with the actual franchise. He cameos because, well he's Stan Lee unofficial public mascot for Marvel.

[up]Yeah but Lee and Kirby did make Black Panther. There's actually a story about them refusing to rename him after the rise of the Black Panther party because they made the name first.
