Welcome to the main discussion thread for the Marvel Cinematic Universe! This pinned post is here to establish some basic guidelines. All of the Media Forum rules still apply.

  • This thread is for talking about the live-action films, TV shows, animated works, and related content that use the Marvel brand, currently owned by Disney.
  • While mild digressions are okay, discussion of the comic books should go in this thread. Extended digressions may be thumped as off-topic.
  • Spoilers for new releases should not be discussed without spoiler tagging for at least two weeks. Rather, each title should have a dedicated thread where that sort of conversation is held. We can mention new releases in a general sense, but please be courteous to people who don't want to be spoiled.

If you're posting tagged spoilers, make sure that the film or series is clearly identified outside the spoiler tagging. People need to know what will be spoiled before they choose to read the post.

Since Thor and now Captain America came out this year, I wanted to get what Tropers thought of the concept and execution of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in general. Personally I love the idea and wonder why this idea hasn't been seriously tried before. It sorta seems to me like the DCAU in movie form (And well, ummm, with Marvel), and really 'gets' the comic book feel of a shared universe while not being completely alienating.

Apparently it independently became a thing in some Central and South American cultures. So some sort of underlying lip fetishism is lurking somewhere in the collective human subconscious.

Here. It's been a part of a lot of African cultures, so it's interesting that they are using it in Wakanda, too. It looks like fictional Wakanda is incorporating a lot of real life African customs.

More normal piercings I've encountered in real life gross me out enough, but ugh! That's just horrifying.

Like the wiki article says it's a hard-to-miss status symbol, like ultra-long fingernails and bound feet in Chinese culture.

And yeah it's pretty Uncanny Valley, especially after reading the part where it says they have to take out your two front teeth for it.

As with most Marvel movies I'm really, really loving the costuming and art design for this movie. It's trickier than previous ones since they're being adapted from real-world artistic traditions that aren't as well known and trying to retain that sense of authenticity while also keeping them fantastical and comic book-y, but it looks like they managed really well. Shuri and Killmonger look especially awesome. Hopefully we'll be seeing some architecture that blends the traditional African and futuristic motifs together in equal amounts.

I think there's probably been one for a while now? I'm just glad the Marvel name is a license to print money so we can expect Black Panther to do well.

I can't wait for FOX to complain that the movie set in Africa isn't American enough.

Let's not get antsy about hypothetical opinions, hmm? People liked Black Panther in Civil War, and this'll be a hit. You Tube comments, Twitter trolling and ridiculous change.org petitions aren't real life.

In terms of piercings, those hoop earrings that distend earlobes freak me out, so these lip ones just make me gag. I won't dwell on it though.

Rewatching it and I noticed Ramonda's design looking like it was taken straight out of the Coates era with the white dreadlocked ponytail. Might've also been a Storm reference since she was originally supposed to play her at one point.

... how you guys don't know about those lip african things? It's a well known thing about African society... isn't it?

And yeah, the poster is as shitty as it can get.

And I'm sure this movie is going to get a racist debate. Either the left and liberals are going to go apesit because somehow the movie portray's black people inaccurately ("WHY IS WAKANDA IN A JUNGLE, WHY ARE THEY SO ADVANCED YET USE TRIBAL-ISH CLOTHING THAT'S RACIST") or the right/alt-right is going to go with the usual stuff ("NO, YOU'RE RACIST, WHITE PEOPLE ARE PORTRAYED AS KILLERS AND CONQUERORS, THIS IS A WITCH HUNT AGAINST WHITE PEOPLE").

In fact, I can see the likes of Anita Sarkeesian and Gavin Mc Innes going batshit crazy over how somehow this movie offends their sensibilities and their ideological agenda. It's going to happen, I'm willing to bet my right eye.

And if it doesn't, well I can always use an eyepatc, Big Boss style.

As far as extreme body modifications go it's one of the more (in)famous, along with Chinese footbinding and Burmese neckrings.

I'm impressed it got over 3 million views in just around 7 hours.

You can expect it to quickly reach Thor: Ragnarok's views which is around 38 million.

We live in a world where it seems people are more excited for Wonder Woman, Thor, and Black Panther more than Spider-man

What timeline is this? lol

And by African society you mean.... just the areas primarily around the horn.

I'm sure Homecoming will still do extremely well by virtue of being Spider-Man. Even the shitty Spider-Man movies make money because he's Spider-Man. Hell, Amazing Spider-Man 2, while a failure by the standards of the past Spider-Man films and a Franchise Killer, still made more money than Iron Man and Iron Man 2, Thor and Thor: The Dark World, Captain America, Ant-Man or Doctor Strange.

Some people are just burnt out by by the saturation of the character.

The woman who's wielding the panther blasters is Shuri (T'Challa's sister). And given that she's apparently a tech expert here, she most likely designed and built those things herself. Also her costume looks at but "proto-Panther" like as well.

[up] Looks like the people who said they would keep the White Gorilla pelts were correct. I was thinking they might try to erase all connection with them to avoid Unfortunate Implications but I guess as long as they avoid calling him "Man-Ape" to his face it should be OK.
